Ordo Illuminatus

good morning.

i have my army list almost done on paper, decided whats in it and how they look but now its time for me to give them a story, hope you enjoy and that it is acceptable.

i have chosen to start them off straight after armagedon. starting with the high lords of terra needing to recover from that titanic battle that was so devastating. seeing that intel was gathered to slowly in this case they went about the creation of the Ordo Illuminatus, a chapter charged with gathering intel, hunting down and punishing friend or fow.

there first charge is to find the traitorus von Straub who was responsable for the unforgivable leadership of armagedon, the leader of armagedon who failed to do anything about the first sighting of the space hulk in the armagedon system. otherwise they carry out recon missions close to the eye of terror and the outer rim of the imperium. there librarians and techmarines have worked hard together to create machines that allow the librarians to use there powers to "see" into the eye of terror or deep space in hopes to catch a glimps of enemy movment or activity. although it is not perfect and at times dangerous for the psyker, it is proving to be of value.

they do not have a homeworld but instead maintain a fleet of star ships for easy movement around the eye of terror and the imperium. constantly on the move and the lack of a homeworld to recruit from, the high lords of terra have allowed the Ordo Illuminatus to recruit from out-lying worlds in the systems that they visit if they wish too. But have no right to recruit from any other chapters recuitment stations. this is to the chapters benefit because of the secresy of the work they do, so they do not often mingle with the other chapters. on occasion they do relay vital intel to a chapter about incoming raids or waaaghs and if needed join in the fighting.

Because they are prepared for the coming battle they have an almost arrogent fighting style in the way that they can ready themselves in the ways they see fit and capitalize on any intel they get, wether its orks, eldar or chaos. they follow the codex astartes to the letter, no quater is given on anything. when in combat they fight zealously, they are master tactisioners and subvertionists , striking at weak points, crippling the enemy from within, sneak attacks and ambush.

the librarians and chaplins hold sway in the ordo Illuminatus, constantly updating there vast libraries and sifting threw infomation gathered by there machine spirits all seeing eyes. only a few librarians are trained to work with the machines and are highly tallented psykers who have to be trained to first use the device and seconedly defend himself and the device he is operating. using these devices does attract the attention of the warp entities and is the target of many vile creatures retaliations. fortunatly they are mostly unsuccsesful due to the emences training.

they are aften asked to track enemy ships moving threw imperial space to iether destroy them after gathering infomation or to notify the high lords of an inpending chaos crusade or ork waagh. they are a small chapter so dealing with large problems on there own is dificult and it is not there main duty iether but they are space marines and are very loyal to the emperor and to the emperor alone. :D

If you want your fluff to tie in with the official background and timeline, you will have to make changes. Here's my initial thoughts, hope they prove useful, feel free to use or ignore them as you see fit.

Two problems immediately spring to mind - the first is the name - 'Ordo' typically refers to a subsect of the Inquisition, not a chapter of space marines.

Secondly is the timeline for the founding of the chapter. I'm not sure which Battle for Armageddon you're referring to, but if it's the second or third, then the dates basically aren't workable.

1st Battle for Armageddon - 499.M41 or 641.M41 (depending on source) - vs Chaos, led by Angron of the WE

2nd Battle for Armageddon - 941.M41 - vs Orks, led by Ghazghkull

3rd Battle for Armageddon - 991.M41 - vs Orks, led by Ghazghkull

The most recent founding of Space Marines was the 26th, in 738.M41, so as you can clearly see, no chapters could have been founded in the aftermath of either conflict of the later conflicts. You could claim they were founded as a response to the first war, but the founding would be a bit late, and see my following comment as to the reason for founding being a bit dubious

there first charge is to find the traitorus indivigual who was responsable for the traitorous leadership of armagedon, the leader of armagedon who failed to do anything about the first sighting of the space hulk in the armagedon system.

Again, this is Inquisition territory, not a duty that would be carried out by Space Marines. Not to mention what a waste of valuable resources it would be for the Imperium to create a thousand strong chapter of bio-engineered killing machines just to hunt down the 'traitorous leadership of armagedon'.

otherwise they carry out recon missions close to the eye of terror and the outer rim of the imperium.

If you look at the galaxy map, a chapter created for a duty on Armageddon would be unlikely to be assigned regular duties around the EoT (it's in a completely different Segmentum, and already has a number of chapters - the Astartes Praesus chapters - that are on permanent assignment guarding against attacks form the EoT). Equally, a chapter created for either duty at Armageddon or the EoT would be unlikely to be carrying out missions at the outer rim of the Imperium - as you can see from the map, both are fairly central (the EoT slightly less so). Choosing for them to be an Astartes Praesus would probably fit better with the spacefleet setup they have.

This bit's not bad - you might want to go into a bit more detail as to how the chapter combines recruits from numerous different worlds into a coherent fighting force, and how they establish the necessary bonds of brotherhood between recruits from vastly different backgrounds.

they are a small chapter so dealing with large problems on there own is dificult

Why are they a small chapter? You mention elsewhere that they follow the Codex to the letter, so why not in this aspect? Also, it's worth remembering, a Space Marine is worth 100 normal men, so even a depleted chapter is a force to be reckoned with

The Ordo Illuminatus?

Okay. Following on from Rogue Trader's assessment, the biggest flaws are that the third (and most devastating) Armageddon conflict was about two hundred and seventy years after the most recent Space Marine founding. But I'm a bit confused as to their name - 'Ordo' just about exclusively refers to Inquisitorial organisations in 40k. You have to be careful with your vocabulary in the 41st millennium.

Regarding the Librarian-centred 'scrying', I don't think there's a huge fluff quibble with it. It gives your chapter something interesting as a hook, and as the rest of the chapter follows the codex, I think it makes the chapter characterful. You could perhaps do something more with it - what happens to those Librarians who can't master it? Just think a bit and detail it a bit more.

cool, im never sure as to the meaning of some of the words but thats fine. so, ill re-think the name and the time-line. i would like the chapters founding to revolve around the second battle for armagedon but if its not a viable time them were would you suggest? and they are a mobile chapter so they can be anywhere they like so i dont think its a problem for them to be in any area in the galaxy wether its the edge of the galaxy or near the eoT, it fits with the fluff and i think its a bit boring if they just stay in one area, this way i get to think up crazy battles with every enemy race they have had a run in with.

and about von s, he isnt the main objective of an intier chapter just a little side mission that they are on the look out for thats all.

is there anything else i should think off? ^_^

dam, i did think that name was taken, shoot. ;)

Most chapters are created to reinforce an area of space which has became under heavy attack or has lost much of its defense. My chapter was created because an area of space had been recaptured and needed to be defended. As for being all over the universe, that is a little hard to believe. Moving around the universe is not like current troops being shipped around the world, at the most taking a day or two. Moving a Chapter of Marines across the Universe would be impossible if it was not for the Warp, and even then they can only do short hops. It is not boring to have them in one section of the universe, it is believable. How would an english ant get to America without the help of humans?

ok, i do want my story to be believeable, so, were is a good place to call home. ive looked at the map provided by rogue trader and its pritty full. might as wel say they have ultra mega power armour and live on a completely unpopulated star... just joking.

and the fact that there is a chapter in all the segmartum. is it ok for that to happen?
