todmaerin
(Pictures below, bandwidth challenged be warned) I'm rather new to WH40K on the tabletop, though I'd like to think that I'm an accomplished modeler/painter from my exploits in a myriad of other game over the past two decades. Dawn of War spurred my interest, so I started piecing together ~2200 points of marines. I've always loved the under dog; when I leapt feet-first into WH40K, given my preference to the Space Marines, my logical choice was the Crimson Fists. There's just something about blowing oneself up in a do-or-die conflict with the Orks then clawing and scratching your way back into service that caught my attention. A pleasant side effect is the liberty that I felt I could take in modeling this army. My first project was to un-shoe two of the speeder tornadoes. Using plasticard, a couple of earth magnets, and a liberal smattering of Aliens/Starship Troopers inspiration, I believe that I accomplished the project with flying colors (especially being able to mod the tornados between AssCan/HBolt and MMelta/HFlamer depending on role.) They're not primed yet, but if anyone wants pictures, I'd be happy to post a couple of these conversions. Edit: to heck with it, you get pictures of the Tornadoes anyway :D Tornado 1: http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/tornado1-top.jpg http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/tornado1-front.jpg Tornado 2: http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/tornado2-top.jpg http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/tornado2-side.jpg My second, and probably most fun project was the Typhoon. While studying the model, I noticed that when rotating the bottom pan from the top shroud, the model looks alot like a T-rex skull-- my inner muse clobbered me with a bat right then. I haven't had the chance to write the fluff in its entirety, but I've got a good idea of the foundation: -Orks steal a bunch of Crimson Fist equipment in the aftermath of the battle on Rynn -Equipment is summarily Orkified, or at least partially -The Crimson Fists are slowly reclaiming the stolen equipment from the Orks -Not exactly having the time to restore the gear to Imperial standards, the Fists are forced to employ the equipment as-is Edit: And for the meat'n taters of the thread, the Typhoon pictures Liberated Typhoon: http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/typhoon-front.jpg http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/typhoon-side.jpg http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/typhoon-side2.jpg http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/typhoon-quarter.jpg http://havenpics.woodmuffin.com/jako/typhoon-quarter2.jpg Points of detail to accomplish in construction: -Rotate Typhoon Missile sponsons downward to stabilize model -Streamline the model making it look more air worthy, as with the Tornado mods -Construct wing assembly to lengthen model without adding copious amounts of bulk -Apply liberal amounts of battle damage and Orikification scarring -Orkify the model-- rotate bottom pan downward, relocate the heavy bolter to nose mount, block in resulting void, add teeth; damage at least one wing, "fix" damage the Ork way. -Remove gunner body, replace seat, construct floor pan for the crew -Model gunner from bits; pose so that he is either climbing over or leaning out of the speeder to shoot at an extra passenger -Comb the 'net for appropriate Grot miniature; attach to rear of craft, modeled to either throw wrench at gunner/one of the engines Ultimately, I think I'll make this Typhoon part of a diorama with a second speeder converted into a doom buggy because, you know, the Orks couldn't get it off the ground. All opinions and critiques welcome, though I would appreciate reserving judgement until I get the pictures posted. Thanks! -Tod Edit: I still have a good deal of scarring and final cleanup to do on the Typhoon, as well, final modeling of the gunner is going to wait until the painting is nearly complete. I still haven't decided how to finally position him, but he's in the general area. /flame on Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/90681-wip-the-liberated-typhoon/ Share on other sites
retlaw83
Sounds like a cool idea. The only problem you might run into is if you meet a fluff monger who gets pissy because Space Marines probably wouldn't re-loot Orkified vehicles, due to the insult and corruption of the vehicles' battle spirits. But, of course, desperate times call for desperate measures, and the ingenuity and cunning of a desperate Space Marine is ferocious. T14
Space Marines probably wouldn't re-loot Orkified vehicles, due to the insult and corruption of the vehicles' battle spirits. well, Marneus Calgars powerfists are re-looted chaos artifacts, no? or is that different because they are weapons rather than a vehicle (they ARE a vehicle of destruction, though  ) EDIT: your conversion is stunning. Very much in character :) cheers -t14 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/90681-wip-the-liberated-typhoon/#findComment-1043046 Share on other sites
Einstein
Well, there was this story of a Land Raider that was looted, but killed all of it's looters and was found again by it's parent chapter. Sian
I don't see why they wouldn't loot it back. It's sacrelige to allow the dirty orcs to use holy Imperial equipment! After re-looting, it would need some serious consecration though. (Not to mention the scrubbing to get rid of the stench..) LupoLoopy
It could be a landspeeder variant created by the fists to instill fear & respect in the Orks, much like Yarrick's looted power claw & laser eye... Chaptermaster Graymantle
Looks great! I love the idea of the T-Rex'ish skull and the extra passenger hanging of the back! Way to go! ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/90681-wip-the-liberated-typhoon/#findComment-1043321 Share on other sites
Einstein
Oh, and that front would be perfect for an Ork Fighta-Bomma... What, are you suspecting me to be converting to orks? Nonono ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/90681-wip-the-liberated-typhoon/#findComment-1043324 Share on other sites
todmaerin
What, are you suspecting me to be converting to orks? Nonono ;) Funny that you should mention that Einstein  Although I despise playing orks (too much hacky, not enough shooty, but almost enough boomy), I've had a ton of fun with conversions. I'm in the middle of sketching out a Looted Leman Russ for a friend and to be honest, the power of the WAAAGH! is compelling. I haven't started painting anything red to go faster yet, though I expect I'm not far from sinking to that level. Bad Tod. Bad, bad Tod. -Tod Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/90681-wip-the-liberated-typhoon/#findComment-1043332 Share on other sites
Barret
As a long-time, dedicated Ork player with a serious love of lootin', I must say... that is -awesome-. I don't think I've ever seen anyone re-loot a vehicle before. The grot fighting with the gunner in mid-flight is really characterful, too. Beornling 3.1415
Rommel had at one point 80% captured vehicles due to the inability to resupply properly in the North Africa campaign. I don't see why space marines can't do the same thing, especially if cut off. Also it seems every other independant character has a weapon liberated from one enemy or another, Everybody like's trophies. note my first SM officer I ever modled had a Shuriken pistol, (it was leagle during the RT days, now of course it could just be explained away as "battle trophy" kept after a conflict with Xenos. Chaoswolf
I think it's a cool idea, and so far it looks outstanding. I don't see why the SM's couldn't/wouldn't do it. Ciaphus Cain did it 'Death or Glory' I believe. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/90681-wip-the-liberated-typhoon/#findComment-1043656 Share on other sites
