Crusading Lions Pictures. Warning: Long

Thanks to Chaplain Desmodeus for the Q&A URL that sent me to a simple online re-sizing program.

I can now display the following pictures for Frater to view, without needing to log into a site to do so.

The one and the original Veteran Sergeant. Created for the January 2005 DIY Chapter Contest. It took 3rd place at my local Battle Bunker and is on the US GW site.

Next up, the lovely Venerable Dreadnought, built entirely from scratch, with a few GW bits to give it charactor. I love this model, but my 'Techmarine' says he wants to 'correct' the AC to have the lower barrel that he left off in his haste to complete the model for Games Day 2005. I will let him do so, but I get a LOT of comments on this guy, and the kids just love to blow him up. *grin* I don't mind. Happy kids sell models, and selling models allows GW to make stuff for the rest of us.

The above picture is washed out by the camera's flash, so below is a pic taken of the model in the case at GD Chicago 2005.

You say it's powered armor you're here to see? Well, that too can be arranged.

Some Termies for the Frater who love their heavy armor.

And... a Speeder for those who like to fly.

I hope to get more pictures taken in decient lighting sometime in the next month or so. I really need to take pictures of the two new bike squads and the assault squad, plus a 'full army' picture of the chapter company to date. Hopefully, the two vindicators will be done within a month as well, so pics of them may be added too.

The Chapter Company Project is about half done so far. Eventually, I will have: 4 full 10-man Tactical Squads with convertable Rhinos (to Razorback), 2 full 10-man Scout Squads with extra bolter scouts and snipers, 3 full 10-man Assault Squads with extras for flamers and plasma pistols, 3 full 10-man Terminator Squads (one squad being Close Assault Terminators), 1 full 10-man HQ Squad in power armor with extras for swapping weapons, banner, champ, etc... 1 full 10-man Terminator HQ Squad also with swapable weapons... Enough HQ in both power armor and Terminator Armor, to field 3 for each type of squad... 3 squadrons of 2 Land Speeder Tornados, 3 Whirlwinds, 2 Dreadnoughts and the Venerable Brother Dreadnought, 2 Vindicators, 2 Predators with swapable sponsons and turret weapons... and, a Land Raider Crusader.

Once all that is done, I will see about getting my 'Techmarine' to slap together a 40K sized Space Marine Landing Craft, somewhat like the one seen in the Epic gaming system. yeah, I know... not useful in a game, but it would be pretty cool to put on a table and assemble the rest of the Chapter Company around it for pictures. We shall see what the future brings.

I know, a loooong post, but I hope the pictures were worth it. Enjoy Frater.

Addendum: I do NOT claim to have assembled and painted the above models. They -are- my chapter, my creation, but I am a horrible modeler and painter. My roommate and best friend Chuck assembles, converts, and paints everything for me. I work in close association with him to get all the details right, and I make all decisions as to which colors go where, equipment, posing, etc. For such concideration on his part, I provide a place to live and work, food, a place to rest, models for his armies, paints, tools, glue, etc... In other words, everything he needs to work on both his stuff and mine. This -is- my army. I created the concept, the color scheme, the background, and have made all decisions reguarding 'look' and such. If I could paint and assemble, I would. But as I said, I'm a horrible painter and modeler. At least I'm honest about these things.

I prefer to play over modeling and painting, and will play just about anyone that wants a game. Unlike several people I know, I don't turn away offers from kids. I remember being one myself about 40 years ago, and how I felt when the older kids and adults brushed me aside. I won't scar any kid like that. It's enough that I, and many others, had to endure such humiliation. Most of the kids don't care if they win... all they want to do is play, and have some fun. Who cares if they don't use tactics well, or get plastered because they were concentrating fire on my Venerable Dreadnought? The glow on their faces when they do succeed in blowing it to bits is priceless... at least to me.

Did you take the apothecaries as sarges divergency for you chapter ?

Yes. The Chapter Trait is 'Purity Above All', with the Disadvantage being 'Death Before Dishonor'.

Thank you for asking.

My 'techmarine' is going to paint up a pad for you sunday, so we can get it into the mail to you by wensday the latest. The painted Pad will be for the right shoulder, and I will add in an 'blank' unpainted pad and a couple of extra chapter transfers. Just in case you want, or can, do a better paint job. The extra transfers for the newly painted pad, or for use somewheres else on the Crusading Lions deathwatch marine's armor if you think it will add charactor.

@Librarian- Melechor: Thanks for the praise. I could see it in my head when I created the concept for the 2005 DIY Chapter Contest. I was blown away that I took 3rd place, and my sgt ended up on the GW-US site. As time has passed, the army gets better and better. I still have a lot to add to the army, mostly troops, and a few more vehicles. When I'm done, I should have enough to field full squads for every FOC entry, excepting Elites, which I will fill with my Dreadnoughts, of course.

@DragonmasterPeter: Thank you. My 'Techmarine' downplays his skills, and every word of praise I make him read for himself. I love my army, and it's 'odd' color scheme. It stands out from the vast majority of 'standard' codex chapter armies, and most other DIYs as well. The lion theme and use of lion bits from the WFB sprues, and the use of Sabrefang heads as vehicle crests, really sets things off well in my opinion. The use of bronze instead of tons of boltmetal also adds to the overall impression. I specified that most of what would have been boltmetal or silver, be bronze instead for several reasons. One, to show that the chapter recruits from a bronze-age culture. Two: the tradition of bronze within the chapter so that those within it would feel more comfortable with their equipment and weapons. And Three: Because I liked the color and thought it would compliment the tawny tan of the Bubonic Brown, and the chocolate of the Bestial Browns well.

@zbo: We have had a truely huge heat wave here, with high humidity levels. The pad might not make it into the mail for a week more. ;) I will, though, keep on the techmarine to get it done ASAP and send it. I'm very happy you are including a Crusading Lions Marine into your Deathwatch force. Thanks. Both myself and the techmarine want to see pics posted when you're done. :D

@DavidKits: We'll see what happens. Chuck has quite a few ideas for projects, besides finishing my full army. He might need something special as a side project later... as I said, we'll see.

My thanks to you all for posting.

May the Blessings of the Holy Lion of Terra, He who sits upon the Throne of Mankind, be upon Thee and Thy chapter brothers.

@Shinobi_soldier: I tried for full army pics with an old digital camera but they didn't come out well. Hopefully, at Gamesday Chicago, or soon thereafter, I can take a few pics of the full army with the most recient additions... a 10-man assault squad, and two 5-man bike squads with attached attack bikes.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, it's now 2 days until GD Chicago. I thought a bump was in order to let frater know that I will be there, and will be bringing my army to set up for pictures. I will try to set up on one of the un-used 'free' gaming tables with green felt covering the table. I and my techmarine will be available all day, swapping places at the table, to answer questions, show off the army, take pics, and generally enjoy Games Day itself.

Within a day or two after GD, I'll try to post new pics up here of the additions to the army, as well as perhaps a whole army picture.

For those attending GD Chicago, just look for the Tan, Brown, and Bronze Space Marines. If you've seen the Venerable Dreadnought, He will be there too. I hope to meet fellow Frater from the B&C, and get C&C on my DIY Chapter in person.

Enough from me for now,

Rymeer

Appologies in advance for the blurry pictures. I will be trying to get better ones in a couple of weeks at the Battle Bunker. All pictures displayed are from set up on back 'free gaming' tables at GD Chicago 2006.

Having said that, on with the few pictures that made the cut... the rest are far too blurry to even think of posting here.

First up, the blurry 'whole army' picture. Sorry frater, I did want a better pic, but the camera gods didn't allow it this time.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h92/Rymeer/Crusading%20Lions%20Chapter/GD%202006%20pictures/whole-army-a1.jpg

Next up, a pair of pictures of the new bikes squads and vindicators.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h92/Rymeer/Crusading%20Lions%20Chapter/GD%202006%20pictures/Bikes-vindi-a1.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h92/Rymeer/Crusading%20Lions%20Chapter/GD%202006%20pictures/Bikes-vindi-a2.jpg

And yes, that's two bike squads, with attached attack bikes, and two vindicators. :D

Next up, the 'core group' as displayed on table.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h92/Rymeer/Crusading%20Lions%20Chapter/GD%202006%20pictures/Core-group-a1.jpg

Next is a pair of the tac squads with their 'rides'.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h92/Rymeer/Crusading%20Lions%20Chapter/GD%202006%20pictures/Two-tac-sq-a1.jpg

And finally... You can stop clapping now... A picture of the Venerable Brother Dreadnought with a 'rank and file' Bolter Marine standing in front of him.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h92/Rymeer/Crusading%20Lions%20Chapter/GD%202006%20pictures/Brother-lions.jpg

As said above, I hope to get better pictures in a couple of weeks or so. When I do, they will be posted.

Comments anyone?

I like them a lot. A good example of a well thought out strongly themed army. They look pretty impresive in the group shot, there's loads of the little buggers :)

My only critisism is that the bases look a bit plain.

Oh and you need to get some better photos!! :P

In reply to the compliments, thank you frater for your kind words. My Techmarines and I have spent a lot of time on this army, and it's FAR from being complete (I'm hoping to have 3 squads-squadrons for each selection of the fast attack, elite, and heavy slots. Along with a veteran squad, and 6 full squads of tacticals and 6 full squads of scouts, as well as two full headquarters squads in both power armor and terminator armor... I have a dream *grin*).

As for the bases... they look rather plain in the pictures because they are sand with small brown 'rocks' scattered at random. I made this army for combat in savannah and desert terrains mostly, so 'special' bases are not a real concideration. I don't mind 'plain' bases. I have an army to play with, and that's what I was shooting for in the first place.

The pictures do not do the fine highlighting of the dreadnought bases justice, and one can't make out the tiny bronze painted bolter casings and skulls and such. The bases that came with the models are good enough for me.

Thanks again for the C&C, and I hope to get better pictures in a week or so.
