==Me==
Greetings all, your resident modelling simpleton, ==Me== here :D I've been getting back into the swing of building/painting things, but I've yet to try anything really ambitious or original for fear of it looking worse than ==My== other stuff. The most I've converted is a robed DA Apothecary from Corbulo's arm and bitz and a scratch-builting combat shield. Riveting, I know :P What I am asking of you, oh gurus of the B&C, is what supplies should I be using, where to get them, and how to use them. 1) What is the best modelling putty/clay, and where can I get it? 2) How can I best used said putty/clay and what sorts of tool/techniques will I need? 3) Where can I find some good lion-ey bits or how can I convert them? That's all for now, I'm sure I'll think of something else later. Thanks in advance :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/91671-some-questions/ Share on other sites
-Q-
SEARCH MY BROTHER!! Kneadatite Greenstuff is the brand most modelers use. They also make Brownstuff which has a harder finish and sets faster. Good for sharper things like weapons and armor plates. I use Greenstuff *A LOT*. I would *not* recommend the tube. The main popular complaint with the ribbon is that there's a lot wasted because the two colors touch. I do not consider this a problem. As a general rule, you will almost always need less GS for each modeling session than you think. I cut the smallest line I can off of my ribbon, trim out the center where it touches, line the two colors up at the middle and cut off what were previously the ends so the two colors match length. For most standard sized to medium sized figures this will create enough GS that one could need during the working period without putting fingers all over finished areas before they're dry. I bought the tube a long time ago following the roars of the internet crowd. The only advantages it has is for doing very large pieces (for which I'd usually use the cheaper white Apoxy anyway) and that the colors don't touch so you throw away less? I find it impossible to cut and very difficult to get an equal portion of each color. I previously ordered from theWarStore.com but they only carry the tube now. So I'm looking for a new supplier too. Never buy the GW stuff, it's too expensive. Keep your package in the dairy tray in the door of your fridge. It will last forever. That tube I mentioned I bought years ago is still in there fresh, I just used some a week or two ago. Plastruct can be ordered directly from Plastruct :( The only downside is that it's hard to imagine the scale though if I remember correctly they are very good about listing out sizes. I'm in the US, it was a while since I ordered but I don't remember any problems at all. I prefer to buy in store to support my local shops and see the scale in person. Plastruct is great for getting clear rod and the like which can often be hard to find locally though. I believe they carry their full line. "Stikky Greenstuff" Thread All good tips. Here's what I do... keep the model BONE DRY I wet my Greenstuff a lot for mixing and sit it in water while I'm working with smaller bits off the larger ball. When I grab a small piece to work with on the model I work it until it's dry and sticky. I lick my scuplting tool before I touch it to Greenstuff EVERY TIME. If you use an XActo knife, don't do this. I find licking gets the tool wet enough to not stick without getting the model or the Greenstuff more wet. From Dick Blick:** Mini Color Shaper Set of 5 ** They're like magic. They don't stick to Greenstuff even without any lubrication. Lovely. Quotes are all the opinon of Q. Q cannot be responsible for the opinions of others shared in linked threads. :P I think These Shield Icons are supposed to be lions. If you have a friend with the WHFB starter set and they don't play Empire, then they probably have too many of these that they'd be happy to share. The Empire cannon from that set also has cool little lion heads holding rings which would be cool detail for tanks or Dreadnoughts. The Angelus Sanctus
Surely i have provided enough sources of inspiration for ==You== ==M'Lord== :P Q is correct about the GS. Its what i have used for the Lion Guard (and ==You== have already seen what can be done with it). It isnt too difficult at all to use, the key thing about its use is patience (next rule is keeping the tools lubricated). As for lion based 'kibble'. I think the Bretonnian range also has some small Lion looking parts, although im not too sure on whats available. Snatching Wolf Tails from the Wolves isnt too bad either :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/91671-some-questions/#findComment-1053439 Share on other sites
==Me==
Thanks guys, you seem to be fitting into your new roles quite well :D As for the lion-ey bits, I was looking for something like Q's lion shield he suggested. I'm trying to make a good combat shield for Tintagel (Captain for Medusa V) and all I have right now is two vehicle hatches glued together :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/91671-some-questions/#findComment-1053537 Share on other sites
-Q-
That shield will be perfect. Ask at your local GW if you don't know anyone with it. A lot of times Redshirts will have personal or store bitz stashes or will know somebody who can help you. ==Me==
I doubt somebody will have that bit, but it's worth a shot. I'd rather not buy a whole box just for one shield ;) One further question, what tool is best for GS scultping, particularly robes. I'm currently using a dentists tooth pick thingy (2 hooks on each end, one blunt and flat, one pointy and narrow) with limited success (but maybe it's just ==Me==) or is there something better (for cheap ;) ) I'll go see what searchy can pull up too Cheers ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/91671-some-questions/#findComment-1053937 Share on other sites

Commander Sha'son
when filling gaps, I use brown stuff. Easier to file down to uniformity. for arm/ leg repositioning, I use a 50/50 mix of brown/green stuff (poop stuff) for more precise sculptings like capes and cowls, I use a 50/50 blend of Magic Sculpt/ Green Stuff. Progenitor
Personally I've gotten better results out of super fine milliput than greenstuff, imho it's a lot easier to work with and very easy to smooth out, be VERY careful with water though, too much and this stuff just turns to a liquid itself. The Angelus Sanctus
I personally just used a toothpick when i did my robing and anything like that and if i need my sculpting tool i used that, but i tend to use a toothpick for most things. -Q-
Sure... and you *can* hammer in a nail with a rock. but when you use a hammer it's so much nicer ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/91671-some-questions/#findComment-1054667 Share on other sites
Freebooter
I just stumbled upon a really cool site for conversions, it's basically an online bits box. http://bwbits.com/ All of the parts are found in box sets (I think) and this site is just re-selling them. From the prices they look like they'd work perfectly if you wanted to convert a character or an entire army. Saves you from buying a termi box if you just wanted a thunder hammer as an example.
