Hollowing out helmets

Recommended Posts

Never done it but what I would do...

Shave off the ribbing and file smooth. Poke a starter hole in the center of the neck space. Get a drill bit the size of the hole I want and drill a hole. File around the edge to kind of round it off smooth.

yep, thats what i'd do, just drill it out to the size you want, then clean up the edges with a knife or files.

Id strongly suggest putting it in a clamp or vice to keep from drilling your fingers.

I use a Dremel bit, looks like a 100 or 191 , I think. Never hollowed out a helmet, but have hollowed out Ork bodies for head swaps ok. Gives a nice round hole, and works well on greenstuff too.

Sorry, can't get a direct link to the bit, they've got 4 different pages on the same URL link..

It's in Bits/Accessories>>Rotary tool bits>>Carving/Engraving, if anyone's that interested.

Here's one I did as an experiment to give a Scout Sarge a helmet without the facemask (which he would be wearing):

Method used:

Deflash helmet and cut off nub and ribbing.

Drill small diameter hole directly in the middle of the neck.

Use larger drill bit (idealy just smaller than the neck diameter) following down the smaller hole.

Use knifeblades of differing shapes to hollow out further.

File inside smooth and (if you want) cut visor off.

Sit back and gloat over your handywork... :)

I used a dremel with the 9905 attachment at slow speed... Clickie! The new marine heads can actually fit if the helmets are hollowed out enough. I put helmets on the GD vet sarge i got and the biker sarge. A tiny magnet was surgically implanted into their craniums and another in the helmets so they dont drop off.. :)

Guh...

Scuzzy... why not just glue the helmet to their heads? Glue would ensure that they don't drop off :D

do you have pics?

Daeothar, you have pics of that helmet on a head? Sounds like it *could* be cool... or dorky. I'd rather not repeat someone else's work just to learn that I don't like the look. :D

No pics but they can be arranged (although it will take some doing). Trust me when I say it looks dorky allright... ;)

The whole purpose of the exercise was to see how far it could be hollowed out. Then later, I had the scout idea but the purpose will be to hang from the belt rather than to be worn.

Haha for sticking the helmet on the belt I'd agree with Joker. He's not joking! If you reallie do want a depression, using a large drill bit, say a size 4 or larger can be use to make a slight depression.

Haha... if they are glued, they can't be taken off and then what's the point of hollowing them out? As for why... it's just because hahaha... :) I do have swappable heads for some of my guys, especially the ones with the rebreathers. Have yet to do a helmet that can fit a rebreather.

As for pics... erm here they are..

If you look carefully, you can see the maggie at the top of the helmet. And yes it's stuck to the shoulder for the purpose of this pic by its magnetic fields. Theres another one for an arm swap...

Wow thats actually really cool madscuzzy, i didnt understand what you meant until i saw the pics, would be fun to show people at the gaming table.

Thats also an inovative conversion daeothar going to have to see the final product of that, i would of left the eye part attached to the upper section though so its more of an attachable visor.
