Tokyo Contest / painting scene

Okay, I made this thread for a few reasons...first of which is to tute my own horn, if that isn't too shameless of myself and to also sorta give a view into how the painting scene is in Japan where the hobby is still in it's youth.

I won my first painting contest! ;)

So, I entered previously my green/gold terminator chaplain into Tokyo's, Game workshop's, 1 year anniversary(they are quite new to the hobby). Yesterday all the voting was complete and everyone was supposed to gather at 5pm to see who won. So I picked up my stuff, grabbed my umbrella(it's been raining for what seems like years now)and headed down to Tokyo on the next train. I ended up standing, crammed between everyone else that was waiting/gaming there and got to watch quite a large 6 player game consisting of Orks, imperial guard, Tau, Tyranids, SM and more Imperials with a thunder hawk, which I was quite confused by seeing as how it seemed it was a thunder hawk and crew basically fighting off five other armies... It was all played out with TONS of the new cities of death terrain which was painted oh so nicely by the staff, so it was looking pretty spiffy with the skulls all detailed and everything. Then adjacent there was a four way game being play with pure space marines...I believe strangely enough they were all DIY chapters save a Ultramarines army...though one might have been medusa's, I THINK it was green and grey. As far as table top quality goes for Japan, it's much higher than any other country I've seen. Their competition quality though, is still lacking in my opinion. But, anyhow about the contest.

You were allowed to enter anything GW basically, so it was free rein in that instance. The categories were divided into single and big model entries. One paticular model caught my attention in the big model entry. It basically was a combination of random sprue bits and pieces to form what I could only consider to be a 'junk mech.' The person had filed down a space marine backpack to remove the vents and turned it upside down to form the mech's head quote on quote. It would be impossible to name all the bits used, but it was definately quite something. B) From what I remember of the more notable pieces I was competing against a Tau Ethereal and guards, a lovely bad moon ork warboss(quite a nice banner with him), a rather colorful lizardman(don't know the unit name, sorry), and not to leave out the marines of course there was of course representing the B&C my terminator chaplain and a rather rough looking orange/black combination assault marine. Orks seem to be popular for some reason in Japan. But Tau seem to be on the rise as well(obviously more Japan friendly with the mechs and such). Space marines of course being the number 1 as it is everywhere else I'm sure(what's not to love about the genetically engineered killing machines!?). Fantasy as is with most places, is the dominate GW hobby, but surprisingly a lot of 40k was present on that day. One fellow in particular had a beautiful SM army done out in purple. I tried to get a good look and it seemed as if he had sprayed or based the army in silver then washed over with purple, so that the color was uniform but still held that metallic shine...very nice. I definately want to try and combine my techniques to make use of this if it's possible. I wish I could have taken some photos...but Japan has this strange anti-photography law.

It's funny to look at it and compare it to painting in other countries. I remember how horrible painting was even in the 90's, there was definately a different level of what was considered acceptable. The Japanese don't have the painting communities like we do, so they sort of have to start from the ground up and evolve on their own. I remember there being a thread about how during one of the Canadian GD's a group came over from Europe and cleaned house, winning a lot. I find this comparable in that sense. Anyhow, starting to ramble again.

I had entered in single mini with my terminator chappy as I was saying and ultimately I was competing against around 20 others if I remember correctly? Definately not on a golden daemon scale, but whatcha gunna do? Seeing as how they usually announce that they will have a prize for the winners and they hadn't previously, I had assumed it'd be nothing more than a pin or such. Happily, I left with TWO prizes! The first being a copy of the hard back fantasy miniatures book and a Rick Priestly signed copy of Imperial Armour 2005.

Well that pretty much sums it up! If anyone has any comments or questions, lay 'em at me!

Congrats ...

and that Chaplain of yours were realy nice, and rather unusual color as well.

regarding the issue of photolaws ...

were on vaccation in bulgaria a week ago and they got the same law about photographic in public places and buildings. probably got something to do with old laws from the old goverment.

The press has no better rights and privileges than any other person, in regards to taking photographs. Saying you can't take photographs is akin to saying you can't look at anything, period.

Nice job with the victory, your chaplain is certaintly a beautiful model.

as the prizes, two hard back books, one pre-release, and one signed...

Wow, nice prizes.

once a gain, good work, its a shame about the photography laws. (the government probably wouldnt like my tourist pictures from when i was there last year...)

Congratulations, Ixupi! Though I find it ironic that there are no pictures of the action in this thread... :tu:

Oh har, har. :D

A note about the photography law, it's more of on an individual basis thing. The main reason is to prevent information leaking regarding new products/videogames/etc. So it's kinda funny if you aren't familiar that it's present and you'll randomly see a "PHOTOS OK!" sign or a "NO PHOTOS!" one for that matter. If you get permission 'most' of the time it's okay. I suppose they'd just want to be protecting other people's work if they didn't want it passed around, which I respect.

Shinobi: I know! I was really happy to get them, didn't expect anything after all.

Crasterimage: Have you been living under a rock! I kid, I kid! Here you go! http://bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=90196

Thanks for the comments guys

I've got to take the asian/camera jokes when I can get 'em. :tu:

I checked the GW Japan site and found nothing about the event there, nor through other means. I guess we'll just have to wait for a WD article with bad photos or something.

*wishes he were there, to take pictures of the event regardless, because he has a history of righteous indignation against freedom of the press*

Believe that should be the contest summary for you.

Honestly, we'd be lucky to get WD anything in Japan. They have only two or three codex translated and the poor fellows have to use english copies here to field anything other than Eldar and SM for the most part. The hobby being so new and such, it's really a shame. But then again it's only been a year, I hope to extend my hand and try and help out some if I can.

When I go back in, perhaps I can talk the staff into letting me take a picture or two of the remaining models, since a lot of people just let their pieces hang out in a display case, such as I did with mine.

I can't wait for the next contest, they usually hold one every month or at least bi-monthly...all I gotta say is Vostroyans and video games....don't ask.

Congratulations on winning, it is a deserving victory for such a nicely painted mini!

Also....you lucky git! Last GW comp I entered (bout 3 years ago with Fantasy Archaon on steed) all I got for winning was a bag of random bitz from the store bitz box!

 Sorry! Last competition they held that I entered was a 'green skin' one. It was a lesser competition and had like... 9 or 10 entries. The prize for that was a metal pin and one of those gamesday(called open day here)dwarfs.

On a side note, they gave away LOTS of prizes. They handed out in lotto drawings about 8 bags of bits, 10 pins, three minis, signed dwarven codex, t-shirt, baseball cap and for the uber prize they had a John Blanche signed lithograph of Primarch Sanguinus. Which while I would have loved to get just because, I really dislike his art work so I'm glad someone who likes it, was the one to get it.

Ixupi - great post, its always interesting to read about how some other cultures would treat something like GW!

About the codicies, I was told by a 'big' manager during my time with the company, that apparently there is a single woman who translates EVERYTHING for GW Japan. So thats WD, rulebooks for all systems, codicies, the whole bunch! The would probably explain why things are a bit piecemeal. If you can speak Japanese, perhaps you should ask for some extra work?!

Or else, find out where she lives and take some strong coffee round to her address :D

PS: will be interesting to find out how GW supposed expansion into Korea goes next year. Im sure GW learnt alot about different advertising methods and culture in the far east, especially after things failed in Japan the first time round, so it will be interesting to see how it goes!
