Bloodwraith
it's ok if i basecoat the rest of the mini? Or you want me to put everything on hold? Sorry about the enthusiasm thing, such a horrible malady  Ah well; at times most of us envy that kind of zeal I'm guessing... And sure; go ahead and do up the arms, bolter and backpack, they're after all parts of the same mini... Oddest thing is how much better of a painter i am just by switching paints  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/97137-bc-basic-painting-skills-bootcamp/page/6/#findComment-1120478 Share on other sites
Barret
Ahoy, My home internet still isn't up, but fortunately for me, my new house is a half block from a public library. I'll be able to post up pics within the next day or two on time for Saturday. Horuswaspretty
Here is my undercoated mini. It has had 4 coats of thinned skull white now, still looks a bit dodgy but will have to do for now. Looks a little grey in the pics but it is white in rl. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/horuswaspretty/IMG_1475.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/97137-bc-basic-painting-skills-bootcamp/page/6/#findComment-1120630 Share on other sites
Pugski
It doesn't look undercoated Horuswaspretty. What's the consistency of your white when you put it on? It shouldn't be to thin either. captain Raiun
@Horuswaspretty: You might want to get a bit of white into the recesses. I can still see the plastic on some of the model, especially on the chest piece. It is undercoated, but the pics make it look very grey1 more coat on the backpack and it should look fine.P.S where's his bolter? @RADU LYKAN: I would have thought that a white undercoat would have suited the Scaly Green colour scheme you got goin' on? Looking good though, everything's in order. Now drill that Bolter!! Glad to see people are getting on well, now lets get the rest of the mini's undercoated! Silver
So, as I read over some of the entries, I realized that somewhere along the line I was almost certainly going to screw up some steps. So, to save myself the headache later, I figured I'd do up two more guys, and go through each step with all three. I hope the extra comments don't slow this down too much, but I don't see how it's *too* bigt a deal. Also, this allows me to try my orange on black and white, as I'm not sure whoch one would be best for my scheme. Bloodwraith
a good idea for painting orange that i was told is; black undercoat brown basecoat thin layers of the darker orange lighter orange highlights Daeothar: quick question, with the deadlines, am i supposed to get my pics up on the date it is for me or the date it is for you? I am one day ahead of you (i think?) as far as i can work out. So do you want me to post the day before pics are due, for you? Or the day after pics are due, for you? That looked really complicated, hope you understood. Oh I did... Not a problem; as you can see, real life kept me away from the project a day longer than expecet too, so let's just stick to the fast and ready rule that the deadline will be on the day I mention, before 2400h locally, to avoid any confusion... Daedalin
Due to camera difficulties- can't figure out where my parents stuck the USB cable, I'll ask when they're home- I'll likely not be able to have a picture up until late tomorrow, or Thursday. Looking good though, everything's in order. Now drill that Bolter!! I did ask about the undercoat colour, peeps said use black so black is what I used. do you think white would be better? I have only painted one test marine in this scheme so far, he had a black undercoat and I liked how the scaly green came out on him, might try a white one once this class is over er... the bolter is drilled? :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/97137-bc-basic-painting-skills-bootcamp/page/6/#findComment-1120980 Share on other sites
angel robertson
Another quick question, at the basecoating stage are we just basecoating the armour or all the parts of the model? SO as mine is DA just the DA green or the purity seals, chest, shoulder pads, lenses and so on and so forth? AR All the armour parts. the other items will be touched upon as details later. Do undercoat the entire mini though... If you have already tried the black undercoat and liked the outcome, then by all means go for that. I didn't know you had already tried it, sorry. Errr...my bad on the bolter! It doesn't look drilled, could just be the black paint and the blue background Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/97137-bc-basic-painting-skills-bootcamp/page/6/#findComment-1121009 Share on other sites
Bloodwraith
white undercoat is the best for basecoating white. Reason being: you don't have to paint the basecoatt. Then use a light grey to do the recesses, that's what everyone tells me. Since our discussions a few weeks ago, the new work in progresses that you've posted look far better than your earlier attempts. It's amazing what changing your paint can do for you! Hopefully this has reinvigorated your enthusiasm  Glad to see you're getting on track - if there's any help or advice you want once this tutorial is over feel free to drop me a PM again, although by the time you've finished this course i'm sure you won't need my help :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/97137-bc-basic-painting-skills-bootcamp/page/6/#findComment-1121187 Share on other sites

Horuswaspretty
ok, I have taken some more pics of my undercoated mini. They are a little blury but show up the white a lot better, the last ones still looked grey. So, how is the undercoat? is it ok? I still have to touch up the chest eagle. Ok, make that very blury. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/horuswaspretty/PA260096.jpg http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r58/horuswaspretty/PA260097.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/97137-bc-basic-painting-skills-bootcamp/page/6/#findComment-1121625 Share on other sites

Penguin of Death
Appaling photos, done in a hurry, I'll try and get some better ones if I have time. Doggy Toe Cheese
brushed on. it looks a little patchy but everything is covered. I have used 4 coats, it may start looking too thivk If I use any more! Did you wash the mini before hand? I find I get a better brushed on undercoat when I wash the model, It get's rid of any grease or the release agent they put on them so they come out of the molds easier. I prefer to spray as it is faster and gives smoother coverage especially when undercoating white.
