They came from Fenris.... (A space wolves blog)

Recommended Posts

Being a collector of the hobby for quite some time now, i believe its way past 25 years. I finally decided to start a new army.
The decision was made to start a Space Wolves army and the aim will be well over 10k in point value. As i was browsing though some online listings of Space wolves auctions on ebay i found a really nice looking one mostly in spue and almost what i wanted. so i placed a bid the last second i won the auction the shipping was not needed since i found out the guy who was selling the stuff lives in a radius of 10km which was good. Today i picked up my new stuff and here's what i got;

  • 9 droppods - all unassembled and complete
  • 60 Space Wolves marines - just 5 assembled rest in sprue
  • 2 rhinos's - assembled
  • 1 razorback - assembled
  • 20 terminators
  • 1 stormtalon
  • 1 venerable dread
  • 2 normal dreads
  • bitzbox really a shoebox size 12 filled to over capacity

The guy also threw in some scouts and bikes and alot of random stuff since he was quitting the hobby. all and all a good deal for just €200,= On top of that he also decided that if i promised to take good care of it i could have his airbrush and paints! so yes i was really happy today!

Ive spend most of the afternoon planning on how to build the army and the colour scheme. I really like the classic space wolves but since we already have a puppy player in our gaminggroup which slapped his models with an overabundance of blue greys i decided to go for grey.

A few months back there was a really nice entry in the whats new today :

and this setting really appealed to me so i decided to paint mine as close as possible to this army.

Trying to do it the GW style really didnt look good so i did some google-fu and said a prayer hoping to fnd a really good tuorial on how to paint these guys. guess what the original author place one on his blog!
This is the result of a quick test model i made (still a real work in progress)

also did some work on the venerable dread adding some bigger studs and make him more wolf like

and added some extra armor to one of my rhino's

more pics will follow soon :D

Hmmm, looking good so far. I prefer brighter space wolves myself, but it seems I am in the minortiy on that one.

Also Space wolves have no flyers (yet) so unfortionatly you wont be able to use the storm talon in games, unless you figure something from allies, but aside from that, good work.

@sirastrates: Thanks, Tutorial is underway!

@darth potato: Thank you! and you got your request.

I just finished my testmodel and have to say im really happy about how he came out!

ive spend the better half of today and yesterday building myself a new armylist. the aim was to go all pods, as the common reader of my blogs you might have noticed i have a soft spot for these things. Why?? you might ask. the answer is simple; i love the design, they are a pain to assemble but a joy to paint. and on top of that dumping a series of these things on a battle field is just epic!!

And although im not a really big fan of using special characters i decided to build a list around ragnar blackmane. i really like the fluff around this guy (tho lukas the trickster is a close one) and it really fits the theme of my army.
i dont really like the 80's model of ragnar so i decided to convert my own.

i have to say he was a joy to paint except for the face!
i decided not to over highlight the armour as it tend to get white grey really soon and that messes up the armour pretty quick

well im off to get my next model, a runepriest , in line converted and parted up will keep you up to date !

comments/crittics/compliments are always welcome

The detailing on the chest plate banner and writing is beautiful. My banners always came out looking flat and now i know why! I need to add depth using a darker brown on the flat surface and not just use the raised detail. Thank you. This has been something that has been nagging at me for a while now. (To all those who already knew this, its not nice to laugh. hehe)

Keep up the good work friend!

Cas

the trick on doing the chest banners is something i recently discovered and is pretty easy to achieve:
use the reaper bone triad with a little adjustment

base: bone shadow
layer: aged bone
wash: les' sepia wash
edge: polished bone (dont be neat on this layer)

the real problem painting my wolves will be the pelts. I hate to drybrush them and tho its the quickest was to do them i found a really good way to do them without drybrushing

Today ive been working on my first runepriest i didnt want to got for a real hard conversion on the model -i just really want to have some paint slapped on him- so i basically used all the part right out of the box and did some minor alterations on just 2 of them.

  • Head - snipped of the topnotch. really liked the head but not the hair. (see picture)
  • left shoulderpad - added some runes in the shoulderpad (see picture)

As said the rest is out of the box:

now for the pictures:

hope to show you some progress tonight.....

Love the color scheme and the execution on your wolves!

The final Ragnar pics look like they may be overexposed just a tad - or is the scheme just a little lighter for him?

At any rate your conversion is 100% better than the old Ragnar - which wasn't that great even when it came out ;)

Yup they seem a tad bit overexposed . will put up some better ones asap

and indeed mine looks alot better then the original sculpt. hahahahah

Awesome job man!

I also really liked the darker grey scheme and youve recreated it pretty spot on.

Keep up the awesome work.

heheh so do i. and ill let you all in a little secret i really wanted to keep, but since i have a really good day ill just share it with the rest of the world:

the basis for the grey i use is Mechanicus standard grey. with the following added: 30 drops of daler rowney black also added 50 drops of matte medium (which prevents the plastic look that GW paints tend to have) and finally mixed it up 80/20 with distilled water and flow improver.

man these wolves are great I love them

thanks!! keep following :D

Looking great so far! I too am a big fan of the darker colors that you went with. It reminds me more of the wolves' pre-heresy colors. Everything was better in 30k, right?

Perhaps your company is some sort of legion relic? ^_^

indeed the pre-heresy scheme works best on the wolves. a few months before i stoarted this project i had a smal commission on a few wolves who needed to be painted in the basic blue color. and i hated it! the scheme im using now is a lot easier to paint and i still really enjoy it.

Damn you! You are making my SW itch come back teehee.gif Nice minis so far.

hahaha now thats the best compliment so far :D

some work in progress pics of my rune priest im working on at the moment:
