Suffer Not the Alien - The Deathwatch Kill Team
Hello Frater, its been a while! After finishing the Syther Squad I worked on a few non-GW related projects for a game set in a galaxy far far away. Between those going a bit longer than anticipated and the Holiday season arriving I haven't had a ton of time or energy for a post. That isn't to say I haven't been productive though, in a rarity for me this will be a one-and-done post as I completed the deathwatch kill team from the Tombworld box a little while ago.
The kit is pretty awesome, though primarily if you got it through the Tombworld box The individual release only containing a single sprue is....not great. I had an extra gravis body laying around so was able to make all 11 operatives without having to magnetize, but that being said I think this team would be pretty easy to magnetize all said and done. While assembling I knew that I both didn't want to spend a ton of time on the project, so opted for helmets on the whole crew. Picking out pauldrons was fun, and I decided to use the opportunity to select only chapters which I knew I'd be unlikely to otherwise ever paint.
Since I knew I was going to stick with a fairly traditional paint job, once they were primed I didn't waste any time getting paint on them. I flagged this one fairly early in the project as a "medium effort" kind of project for me. I was excited to get them on the table, and didn't want to spend ages getting them there when I also had several other projects waiting in the wings. I primed black with grey zenithal from above to set the tone. Ultimately I don't know how much the zenithal mattered, but it at least broke up the black a bit.
Since I didn't have a ton to do on the armor, I hit some highlights and dropped into weapons and Icons which moved at a similar speed. Before I knew it I'd completed the base colors and done an oil wash.
The entire time I was working on these models I was struggling with what to do with the bases. I wanted to do a necron-themed base, and toyed with a few different ways to do it before ultimately settling on the "Necronic" GSW rolling pin. I've used these in the past a variety of times and I'm always pretty happy with the results.
All said and done the project only took a couple weeks and I was able to get them on the table fairly quickly. Quickly enough to realize that they were (and are) almost comedically over-powered. They've spent a LOT of time in my box since then, waiting for the day when I don't feel dirty wielding them in a casual game.
