Suffer Not the Alien - The Deathwatch Kill Team

Hello Frater, its been a while! After finishing the Syther Squad I worked on a few non-GW related projects for a game set in a galaxy far far away. Between those going a bit longer than anticipated and the Holiday season arriving I haven't had a ton of time or energy for a post. That isn't to say I haven't been productive though, in a rarity for me this will be a one-and-done post as I completed the deathwatch kill team from the Tombworld box a little while ago.

The kit is pretty awesome, though primarily if you got it through the Tombworld box The individual release only containing a single sprue is....not great. I had an extra gravis body laying around so was able to make all 11 operatives without having to magnetize, but that being said I think this team would be pretty easy to magnetize all said and done. While assembling I knew that I both didn't want to spend a ton of time on the project, so opted for helmets on the whole crew. Picking out pauldrons was fun, and I decided to use the opportunity to select only chapters which I knew I'd be unlikely to otherwise ever paint.

Since I knew I was going to stick with a fairly traditional paint job, once they were primed I didn't waste any time getting paint on them. I flagged this one fairly early in the project as a "medium effort" kind of project for me. I was excited to get them on the table, and didn't want to spend ages getting them there when I also had several other projects waiting in the wings. I primed black with grey zenithal from above to set the tone. Ultimately I don't know how much the zenithal mattered, but it at least broke up the black a bit.

Since I didn't have a ton to do on the armor, I hit some highlights and dropped into weapons and Icons which moved at a similar speed. Before I knew it I'd completed the base colors and done an oil wash.

The entire time I was working on these models I was struggling with what to do with the bases. I wanted to do a necron-themed base, and toyed with a few different ways to do it before ultimately settling on the "Necronic" GSW rolling pin. I've used these in the past a variety of times and I'm always pretty happy with the results.

All said and done the project only took a couple weeks and I was able to get them on the table fairly quickly. Quickly enough to realize that they were (and are) almost comedically over-powered. They've spent a LOT of time in my box since then, waiting for the day when I don't feel dirty wielding them in a casual game.

Those Necron bases look really nice. Are the rolling pins hard to work with and paint?

Very easy to work with, and paint just like anything else once the clay/polymer/etc is set. The above bases were done into milliput, which gives them a somewhat grainy finish I'm not crazy about, but once painted it was barely notable.. Application is as easy as spreading your preferred substance on the base ensuring it is smooth/even across the surface, then applying the textured roller over that. Repeat as necessary and clean the tool afterwards with soap, water, and a stiff bristle brush. Once milliput or greenstuff gets dried in in the nooks and crannies of the pin its VERY challenging to get them out.

I tried rolling out a layer onto sculpy (an oven dry clay) before doing the milliput versions, and while the detail was better and the clay was overall easier to work with, the fact I couldn't apply it directly onto the bases beforehand meant that my sheet was WAY too think for the bases and it was too brittle to be able to effectively trim down. I've done greenstuff as well in the past and I think I probably like that the most, but I was running low on it before starting these bases and didn't' want to go buy more....so milliput won the day.
