The Dengamar Strife Part 2: A Start
So this is the start of my narrative, I did a brief summary for the first post on the Dengamar Strife. Here's what I have written:
QuotePart 1: The Sands of Dengamar
On the planet in the Greygar Sub-Sector, desperate colonists try to make a living on a harsh world. The people of Dengamar Prime try to spin sand into gold. But outside forces are gathering to threaten the planet’s stability.
The Dengamar system, in the grand splendor of the imperium, is unremarkable. Located on the edges of the Greygar Sub-Sector. The system was initially surveyed in 250.M37, ships were launched from the Anelanni System by the Departmento Colonia but due to a scribe error that colony vessels weren’t dispatched until 460.M37.When the colony ships did arrive they found that the Dengamar system to be quite different then what the survey had documented.
Dengamar is a 7 planet system that orbits a single red dwarf star. 3 rocky inner planets and 4 large icy gas giants. The original plan was to colonize the 3rd planet in the system. In 250.M37 when the system was surveyed by rogue traders. The 3rd planet was noted to be an ideal planet, possibly one selected for a paradise world but when the colony ships arrived the planet seemed to be stripped of all life and atmosphere. Colony Command chose that instead of heading back to the Anelanni system, that they would make planetfall on the 2nd rocky planet in the system. Dengamar Prime, as it is now called, is about 10% more massive than terra. It has one large ocean that comprises 75% of the planet's surface and one large continent. The planet is similar to ancient terra’s Devonian period, where most xeno life that inhabits the planet is aquatic and fishlike, while the main continent was a desert with only basic microbes and moss-like plants hugging the coastlines.
Colony life on Dengamar Prime was hard. Soil was non-existent and the coast was battered by hurricanes while the interior suffered from large sandstorms and high temperatures. So the population heavily relied on xenofisheries to provide food for the colonists, with giant fish factory boats that would troll the ocean. Desalination plants were constructed due to there being little to no surface level fresh water on the continent. What the colony was rich in was sand. The continent was one large system of sand dunes, some of these dunes being 4000 meters tall , but analysis of the sand found something interesting about the continental sand. This sand had large quantities of silicon dioxide and was very low in impurities unlike typical desert sand. “Sand Scrapers”, large sand harvesters were built by using colony ship parts. Glass manufactoriums were constructed and trading houses were established in order to facilitate interplanetary commerce. Dengamar Prime trade networks were not abundantly wealthy but it was enough to keep the operation afloat. The colonists settled on the coast in the north east part of the continent and named their city Hydris Prime. With the main noble families: Sisko, Ottoczar, Von Lash, Dumir and Muckscar rising to top. The city was 500,000 people at the start of M38 By M40 2.2 million people were living on Dengamar Prime with Hydris Prime containing the vast majority of the population and very few scattered settlements built along the coast of the supercontinent. Construction of 4 orbital promethium mining rigs was made to gather the fuel on the 6th planet called Shu.
It was during the start of M41, that the Dengamar system attracted the scrutiny of outsiders. The planet had always relied on interplanetary trade to keep it running, but now more and more goods were flowing out and into the system. This first got the attention of pirates, some of whom would sometimes raid the shipment of glass lenses and promethium. Sometimes these raids were contracted by rival trade houses hoping to get an advantage on their adversaries. But the arrival of the xeno race Orks would change things. Orks have always ignored the upstart colony in the years past, seeing not much “good fighting or loot” on the Dengamar but now with promethium heading out of the system, that was basically unguarded to the Orks prove too tempting and the Orks began to raid the space tankers and transports that were coming out of Dengamar system. The Imperial Governor at the time, Lord Athelstan Von Lash petitioned the trading partners for aid against the xeno threat in favor of better trade deals. Ultramar would answer the call, sending ships and equipment as well as tasking the Obsidian Jaguars to patrol the trade routes until a more suitable fleet presence was established. This worked for a time as Dengamar built its defense fleet and its PDF forces would grow from 15,000 to 100,000. There was something on the horizon that Dengamar wasn’t going to be ready for.
Part 2: Octarius Problem
With the war breaking out in the Octarius sector, the Dengamar braces for impact as refugees pour in. Due to mismanagement of the Lord governor, the people are pushed to the brink. An enterprising military commander looks to take advantage.
By 990.M41 Dengamar had reached a population of 5 million souls. The trade deals were now flowing in as Dengamar had enough forces to protect its trade routes from enterprising pirates and the Ork threat. But then pour in the refugees from systems across the Greygar Sub-Sector. The Octarius War had begun. Systems were being attacked by Ork and the Tyranid menace and the survivors looked for any place that they could find. At first these refugees were welcomed by the Lord Governor, these huddled masses were sent to the glass manufactoriums or to Shu for promethium extraction. Easy labour to be extorted, but the flow of humanity kept coming. By 999.M41 the population was ten fold increase. The planet had to lean more and more on the trade networks. The ocean that was once full of xenofisheries to feed the population were pushed to their limit. A growing resentment began to take root. The native Dengamars were struggling with shortages. Inflation was out of control. Starvation was becoming common. Dengamar was on the brink.
This is where Chaos found its foothold. The PDF of Dengamar, now at 500,000 strong, were feeling the refugee crisis most acutely. Once they were a protected class on the planet. They were the brave defenders of the people in years past. Defending Dengamar from the xenos. Now they were quelling food riots and worker strikes that mostly put them in conflict with the refugees. Gul Dumir was the commander of the elite palace guard called The Grey Regulars. The charismatic Dumir would push the planetary Lord Governor Markgraf in giving the palace guard personnel and equipment due to the increasing civil disorder. With public strife at an all time high, Lord Markgraf gave more and more control over to Dumir. At the dawn M42, a worker strike on Alpha Rig on Shu caused economic hardship as trade agreements were broken due to the lack of promethium heading out of the system. The Lord Governor sent in the PDF to stop the strike. Due to the brash nature of the PDF commanders, Alpha Rig was destroyed when the Rig's engines were crippled and the station fell into Shu’s atmosphere. Blamed for the loss of the promethium rig, the PDF resentment started to turn to rage. The PDF would hurl blame at the lord governor. The Lord Governor would blame the refugees.
With that, Gul Dumir would seize the moment and enact a coup. Before Dumir could assassinate the lord governor, Markgraf would send a distress astropathic message to the high lords of terra. The planet was plunged into civil war. As Dumir and his newly anointed Bloody Greys started a systemic purge of the planet’s forces and administration. Most of the noble houses either were in league with the Dumir coup or were caught so unaware by the plot that they were destroyed with very little resistance. Loyalist forces put up a valiant fight against the Bloody Greys with House Ottoczar being able to make it out of the city intact but they were then driven from the city of Hydris into the wastes of the supercontinent.
