The fifth Beatle

a.k.a. The Pentarchy of Death – part II

Hi folks.

1+1+1+1 does not make 5. This statement looks obvious, doesn’t it? So when I have targeted a gathering of the 5 Tier 1 Dramatis Personae of the Ynnari narrative arc, it was obvious that the missing fifth Beatle will have to show up some day. And that day has come.

After some hesitation and introspection about my purchasing behavior (See [here]), I have finally had that “leap of procurement”. And Yriel has been delivered (along with Dark Reapers; my 3 entries wish list is therefore now reduced to 1). And it is time to paint the Pirate prince.

This new version of the Corsair is more aligned, from an iconographic point of view, with the Corsairs’ aesthetic. The silhouette remains very similar to the old model, with loss of the references to the Tyrranids. It is puzzeling how you can do something new while keeping a global impression that it stays close to the same good old model. Though resized. And, in fact, it is a different model if you look carefully enough (i.e. more than 2 sec.); first impressions are sometimes that erroneous.

Anyway, painting the lad is a new step in my “Pentarchy of Death” project and it is probably the toughest model to tie to the Ynnari without major loss of its genuine character. I did not want to make a reddish Yriel, but what touch of red can be just enough to link him with the new born god of deads? Colour scheme is desired to still be based on the Eldritch raiders with that Iyanden yellow and blue banner. But incorporation of red only as pennant for the helmet (as I will go for the helmeted version) and the ribbon attached to the lance is not enough for my taste.

Alternatives offered are therefore quite limited:

1.      Doing a bicolor scheme with reddish hue for bottom of legs.

2.      Marking armor sculpts in red just as for the Visarch

3.      Incorporation of red on the cape, either outer or inner part.

The current scheme makes the legs darker, not to say black on the Raiders. Shifting to red will probably not be that balanced with the blueish color of the rest of the armor.

Similarly, details in gold have a good contrast with the black and darker tones. Red is OK but… it has been an “un-optimum” painting experience on the Visarch. Let say that I might prefer passing this time.

This leaves us with the cape. I am not fond of the blue cape on blue armor. Too much blue for me. I do rather the black used on Karseth. And I will probably go that way too for the outer part of the cloak. So it leaves only the inner part for some red. I have been to the conclusion that this solution is rather OK, even if the contrast is less punchy than the one achieved with bone color for inner parts of the capes. But I have a biased opinion there…

I realize that this model will look damn close of the paint scheme I have used on my Kabalites. Might I have to try out a distinct base color for the body so that my Leviadon blue wash will look different? May be a Thunderhawk blue base coat?

That was the plan. Ans as often it shattered. The red inner cape was not for my taste and I changed it back to bonish color. The Ynnari afiliation will therefore be Gems and helmet pennant only.

As for the base colour, I stayed with my previous base very similar to my Kabalites: I had no time to go and source other colours.

The result is therefore a Pirate prince qu
ite close to the GW colour proposal, with some changes for the cape and a reversed scheme on the back banner for the piratical one:

The familly portrait gives us something like (after putting reikland flesh wash on Yvraine):

Slightly corrected pic, because of poor light...

My Pentarchy of death project is now over, unless I add extra Dramatis Personnae later.

See you
