11th edition is calling
So with Games Workshop releasing all of the detachments points and mission dispositions. I can now start planning out some of my armies. Generally I pick two flavors to run a army. Here's what I'm thinking.
Space Marines - Loxodon Guard
Gladius Task Force - Priority Assets - 3DP
And
Ironstorm Spearhead - Purge the Foe - 2DP
Dark Age Arsenal - Priority Assets - 1DP
Thoughts: Now, I have been use Gladius or iron storm pretty much all throughout 10th edition. With Gladius being the most used. I knew that Gladius was going to be 3 DP, although iron storm was debatable if it was going to be 3 or 2. Looks like it's a 2 pointer so I got excited to look over the 1 point detachments that the space marines had to offer. The vanilla space marines didn't have much to offer the Loxodon Guard. My guys tend to run deep with Blade guard, dreadnoughts, hellblasters and eliminators. But what did piqued my interests was the dark angels Dark Age Arsenal detachments. I was already running a lots of hellblasters that could benefit but also macro plasma incinerators and the wide number of plasma pistols I have running about. We'll see what happens when the eventual codex drops for Space Marines but until then, I'm going to be running stealth Dark Angels.
World Eaters - Skull Brethren
Berzerker Warband - Purge the Foe - 3DP
And
Goretrack Onslaught - Take and Hold - 2DP
Vessels of Wrath - Priority Assets - 1DP
Thoughts: World Eaters have been dominated by Berserker Warband and I don't think the new detachments are going to change that. That doesn't mean I won't want to try it out and I think Goretrack and Vessels might be a fun time. I thought about Khorne Daemonkin but I think any plans for going in that direction are on pause.
Astra Militarum - The Bloody Greys
Grizzled Company - Priority Assets - 3DP
And
Hammer of the Emperor - Purge the Foe - 2DP
Designation Force - Reconnaissance - 1DP
Thoughts: I haven't really played many games with these guys as the army has been in a holding pattern for a while. But 11th edition should change that. I like the raw general purpose power of Grizzles Company. It's the Hammer of the Emperor and Designation mixture that has got me thinking. Having scout sentinels move in the mid board, spotting targets for the big tanks sounds like how an armoured company should work.
Tyranids - Hive Fleet Asmodeus
Crusher Stampede- Purge the Foe - 2DP
Warrior Bioform Onslaught - Take and Hold - 1DP
Vanguard Onslaught - Reconnaissance - 2DP
Ambush Predators - Disruption - 1DP
Thoughts: Tyranids have been my main army for most of 10th, although my efforts to make Crusher Stampede work have been mixed. Vanguard Onslaught has had a bit more success. Now with both detachments at 2pts, I can add a bit more power to each. Ambush Hunters looks great and I'm hoping Warrior Bioform Onslaught will make me dust off the 15 Tyranids warriors I have. I will have to test out which combo will perform better.
Final Thoughts: so these are some of the ideas when it comes to detachments. Of course points values are really going to be king to which detachments have power. I also wonder if unit sizes will have an effect? Like, are we going to see less 20 man blobs of infantry seeing fitting them in a 9 inch circle, let alone within a terrain feature might be hard. But we won't know until we start playing.
