It all started with a colour scheme

Setting Sons.jpg

At this present time, being new to the hobby, my friend and I only have the time and sufficient grasp of the rules to play Combat Patrol.  However, with an eye to the future, should we ever get used to the rules, I’m hopeful we can fit an incursion scale conflict in.  So, bitten by the bug, I increased my number of models and had the realisation that I could make several of the 10th edition Combat Patrols with them.

I had previously painted them as Crour blades (I thought blood Angels sounded bonkers but didn’t like all that red and gold and also I have loads of maroon paint). I watched some YT videos and saw that the grimdark style seemed popular, so I made grimdark Crour blades.  They were grim and dark.  The wife didn’t like them, being so dull, and actually neither did I.  Trying to spot them on a dark tabletop wouldn’t be easy, they were gloomy and didn’t look fun to play with.

So, I showed the wife the Codex (this time for Vanilla Space Marines) and said choose  one.  She liked Exorcists, okay, they seem cool.  Painted 1000 points.  I then had that realisation about the different Combat Patrols and had read half of Oaths of Damnation and Exorcists just didn’t seem like a barrel of laughs.

So time to make a homebrew…

I looked at the colour schemes and the Necropolis hawks stood out.  I read into their origin and liked the whole urban warfare colour scheme idea…but didn’t want to conform to a recognised chapter.

So I started mixing purple (not a common space marine colour) and grey.  Surprisingly it made a lovely lavender colour.

Now, when I say lovely, I mean it reminds me of an old matchbox Jaguar.  Granted, it isn’t very “butch”, but it’s colourful…how to butch it up?  I look at the colour wheel and its triad is with green and orange.  Well, I’m going old hammer green bases so what to do with the orange?  Quick bit of googling says lavender and orange are the colours of sunset/sunrise….so there we have it, this chapter fight as the sun sets.

Now my Chapter is going to be a bit daft.  I think early editions of 40k were purposefully a bit anarchic and silly.  I don’t want to break 40k, I know there are plenty of people who take it seriously (perhaps too seriously).  I’m here to have fun.

So who’s the Daddy?  A quick look at the Firstborn Legions Astartes and low and behold there’s a Legion called Dusk Raiders…no problem, it’s fate, THEY ARE A SUCCESSOR CHAPTER TO THE DISK RAIDERS.  Huzzah!

Sadly, it wasn’t to be so simple…

Dusk Raiders + Mortarian = Death Guard + Horus = Traitors.  Oh dear.

Some reading, tiptoeing around “lore” and an Index Astartes is born.

Awesome work on those guys.

It's amazing how one little color or idea can spark an entire army.

I like the color scheme, I can honestly say they don't remind me of anyone else's army, which is great as people will remember your army versus the one if the 173,000 Ultramarines armies in the world today.

(In the future, try using a wash like nuln oil to fill in the crevices between the armour plates. It makes the models look cool... said the guy with grey plastic custodes)

Thanks, I have tried several washes (mostly army painter dark and strong) but have been using oil washes since the Grimdark experiment.  I don’t like too heavy a wash, although I went very light on those assault intercessors.  I’m currently doing some heavy intercessors, we’ll see how they come out.)

I missed those Assault Intercessors the first time around. You did an excellent job on the highlighting too.

I look forward to seeing this paint scheme on a vehicle.
