What's in a name..?
While you can find some painting updates in my painting log over in the Works in Progress forum, I'm currently working on a piece that will set out some of the background of the Ashen Sentinels - but before I post that I just wanted to write a little about my process and 'inspiration' for choosing names when I'm doing this.
For the names I've chosen for some of the Chapter's Captains, my starting point has been some local history. My home county is Suffolk, which has a few castles still standing from Norman times. I looked up the names of the lord's or Kings that had them built, looked at the meaning or origins of these names, then found the ancient Greek or Latin equivalents. The unwritten rule of naming Space Marine characters is, if in doubt, go for something that sounds Roman or Greek!
For names of planets, systems or sectors, my inspiration is a bit broader: the old languages of Britain (Anglo Saxon names), or Gaellic derivatives; the names of scientists, such as nuclear physicists.
As well as looking for ideas and inspiration for names, I've been playing about with AI art, trying to create visual representations of planets and other settings that are connected to the Ashen Sentinels - either as worlds under their protection, or where they have been or are waging war against the Imperium's enemies. I'll use these illustrations in any background text I write; but in the meantime, here's a taste of what I've been able to generate
