I created a new pile of shame in under a week

I recently wrote about selling my pile of shame and how it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Then I went on eBay and picked up two more Ork box sets in addition to the Combat Patrol I already had.

It's not the same though, this isn't a pile of shame. It's a pile of potential.

Let me explain.

First and foremost, they were excellent deals. The Beast Snagga army set was £100 and the Imperium Premium Kit was £35. That's value you simply cannot turn down.

Secondly, I have a plan. Instead of having everything sat in the boxes for months on end, I'm going to build them ASAP. It's all part of my new model-building system based on an incredibly complicated excel spreadsheet. I'm going to build all of these models, then prime them, then drybrush them, then paint them, then base them and then actually play a game with them.

I swear, that's what I'm actually doing. I've already built 5 models!

When this process is done I'll have well over 1000 points of Orks to take to the table. My old method of spending 10+ hours painting each mini was too slow so I'm going to try the slapchop method with the 2.0 speed paints from the army painter. A friend does the same technique for their 'nids and they always turn out pretty awesome - so with a little extra detailing I'm confident I'll have an army that I can be proud of.

The hardest part is staying away from eBay and Facebook marketplace. It hurts me to know there's probably some great deals out there that I'm missing out on. Maybe if I check every now and again it won't hurt anyone... right?

This is a tops idea, I cannot recommend enough spending a day, getting everthing built, and zenithal primed and drybrushed before starting proper. This will allow you to pick any unit as it takes your fancy.

Slap / Chop is amazing for getting models on the table QUICK. Last year I did a large Ork commission (96 models) during the 3 months of Call to Arms, and key to that was nailing a good Ork flesh colour, and this is what I went with,

I've been slap/chop'n and using 3 parts Plaguebearer to 1 part Scorpion Green, it's damn near perfect for a single coat. The Runtherds at the back had 1 part Ork Flesh added to the mix.

That's saved me a job - finding some good colour recipes was on my jobs list! I'm planning on having a 2-3 different skin tone colours to a) make the models look a little more varied at a glance on the battlefield and b) help to differentiate duplicate models (such as the push-fit ones from the new boyz)

I was thinking that, once they're all primed and drybrushed, I can simply sit down for a few hours and paint all the green bits or paint all the weapons and break it down that way. It'd take a while but they'd all come together in a big flurry at the end!

I thought you were just gonna do the combat patrol first lol

I’m always looking on eBay… thing is I don’t have the cash to spend so it can only be window shopping. Seen hundreds of amazing deals come and go …

What you’re suggesting sounds like a great idea. I did something similar recently with my Imperial Guard for GreenScorpion’s challenge. I painted a 1850 point army in two months by:

1. Painting all base colour/wash/two dry brush layers on Every. Single. Model in one go. No need to be careful, just slap it all on as you can paint the details later. This meant that when I came to finishing models, each model felt quicker to finish as this huge stage was already done.

2. Breaking the army into chunks to paint. I would batch paint two different squads and a tank at the same time. This way I got a feeling of achievement from completing something but also not doing all infantry before tanks, or doing all the tanks and being left with boring infantry. I gave myself a week to do each chunk.

You could try something similar e.g. prime and drybrush everything, then break the army into chunks like:

Week 1: Warboss, boyz, deff dread

Week 2: Nobz, boyz, kopta

Week 3: Mek, grots, kopta

etc.

I'm thinking of gamifying what I'm doing - so maybe treat myself to something new when I'm at least build, primed and drybrushed. That way it's sort of motivational instead of an impulse purchase. Easier said than done though!

Yeah breaking them into chunks is something I was thinking of too. As I said above, originally my plan was to just paint every single green bit. On probably over 100 models. Then go back and do all the brown and so on. I think it'll be the most efficient but I'm not sure how well it'd keep me motivated tbh.

Originally I was going to start with just the Combat Patrol but I don't really like half the models in the set and I can't play a game with just a unit of 20 Boyz so I had to adapt and overcome :teehee:
