Some Notes on Greymanes Tactics and Organization

General Tactics

Though each Fyrd has its own preferred ways of war, the Greymanes hew generally to two tactical philosophies. The first is deemed the Fragarach (literally 'Unswerving Sword'), wherein Greymanes forces will attempt to rout the enemy force through simultaneous, violent attacks on command and control elements, or failing that, the largest concentration of troops. On the defensive, however, they dig their heels in, seeking to attrite their foes through the inborn toughness of Astartes. Though costly, the 'Unyielding Shield' has proved effective.

The Greymanes have a noted tactical preference for close-range firefights and melees. Though this does not override consideration of other means of killing, New Albian culture values getting to grips with one's foes and destroying them eye-to-eye. Other methods are considered the domain of wærloga (a word with meanings including but not limited to strangler, poisoner, thief, or hired killer) who are immensely despised by New Albians. Whilst it is doubtlessly restrained in the Greymanes, there also remains a tinge of that battle-lust common to the sons of Russ.

Thus, they rarely charge headlong into a fight, preferring a more planned, albeit decisive approach. Often, they make extensive use of shaping operations, conducted either by air assets, long-range fires, or Vanguard Space Marines. But, Greymanes forces also make a concerted effort to close to point-blank or even melee range, where decisive battle can be waged. In their mind, this is where the tools of their deadly craft are best applied. With flashing blade and roaring bolter, the Greymanes drive their foes, inches at a time, back from the borders of the Mavor sub-sector.

Burhs - Strategic and Logistical Loci

The Greymanes, due to a frenetic operational tempo and constant requests for aid from within the Mavor sub-sector, prefer to travel light when conducting operations. However, they also maintain this pace of fighting by means of the Burhs, specialized, fortified munitions storage facilities, logistical hubs, and field workshops. These are largely scattered throughout the sub-sector, manned by serfs, commanded by members of the eighth Fyrd, the Wake. While the usage of these means the Greymanes are well supplied within Mavor, they also somewhat bind them to their ‘neck of the woods’. Indeed, the Greymanes prefer it this way, for they generally loathe being away from New Albia for too long.

Around the Burhs, communities of dependents and camp followers have sprung up. Often, these take the form of tent cities, or if the inhabitants are lucky, hovels, lean-tos, and shacks. Living and dying in the shadow of their guns and behind imposing curtain walls, these mortals trade food and their labor for an assurance of safety. These 'burhmen', as they have come to be called, increasingly fill the ranks of the Chapter's serfs as victuallers, mechanics, emissaries, and procurators. Mortals born on New Albia, however, still take the majority of positions related to security. Conversely, those roles that require technical skill, a silver tongue, or knowledge of Mechanicus rites are filled by the burhmen.

On Organization

Being Codex-divergent, the Greymanes make use of their own idiosyncratic system of organization. They are composed of eight fyrds, each roughly a reinforced Codex-standard Company in size. Each Fyrd has its own Armory, Apothecarion, Librarius, and fleet. Rather than subunits, these are better conceived as independent warbands or retinues of their Aetheling, with organization and tactics being up to the personal tastes thereof.

Each Fyrd is chiefly composed of a variable number of Druhts, infantry units of variable size and tactical roles. A Druht is generally composed of 6-10 line-brothers. Ideally, the majority of Druhts in a Fyrd are Intercessors who can be alloted war-graith for either close assault or Battleline duties. However, it must be noted, the personal tastes of an Aetheling override such ideals more often than not. Such ‘Battleline’ Druhts can also be re-armed and retasked as Infernus Druhts or Hellblasters, fairly readily. The versatility of Mk. X power armour also adds flexibility to what missions a single Druht can accomplish. If anything, the Greymanes’ organization is wholly fluid, strict rules or tables of organization and equipment giving way to the preferred tactics of the Aethelings, as well as cold bitter necessity.

Wargear gets lost, of course, as do brothers. The Greymanes can readily replace the former via the burhs. But replenishing the ranks takes costly time and effort to even bring an Aspirant to initial training. The Space Wolves do not replenish their packs; the Greymanes have no choice but to replenish standing Druhts to maintain combat efficacy. Even still, Druhts often operate understrength or parted out from their Fyrd as support or advisers for other forces in Mavor.

Types of Druhts

The Greymanes use a system of distinguishing between Druhts, the smallest subunits in the Chapter, that draws on both Codex orthodoxy as well as New Albian and Fenrisian traditions. This record will largely cover the idiosyncrasies thereof, but similarities will be pointed out where necessary.

Firstly, there are no 'Blood Claws' in the Greymanes conception per se. Initiates are precious resources, and their lives are not to be expended in front-line assault roles where their youthful battle lust and inexperience might work against them. Instead, they form druhts who take on the roles of reconnaissance, infiltration, sabotage, assassination, et cetera. These Vanguard druhts are universally led by veterans of the Chapter, similar to a more Codex-compliant formation. While this is largely thankless work, it teaches them restraint and patience, and impresses upon them that the best approach might be an oblique one.

Close Support and Battleline druhts are the domains of full Battle-Brothers. As previously noted, Greymanes Intercessors do not sharply distinguish between the 'standard' role of Intercession Squads and the Close Support variant. It is not uncommon for a unit to fight one battle as one role, then the next as the other. Furthermore, Hellblaster druhts are not counted amongst the Fire Support roles, being reallocated to the Close Support cadres. Due to the martyrdoms that ensue from the use of Plasma Incinerators, perhaps this is for the best.

The Fire Support druhts, similar to the Space Wolves' Long Fangs, are veteran fighters who have yet to ascend to the ranks of the Gesith or were simply passed over. The worst of any remaining impetuousness is gone, replaced by a cold, logic honed by hunter's instincts. If one of these druhts can catch a foe wrongfooted, they can and will, attacking from unexpected angles with overwhelming force.

Gesith are often termed the Veterans of the Chapter by outside observers, and are most often seen gathered into their own Druhts, as to concentrate their combat efficacy. This is but one of their many roles. They also serve their Aethelings as advisors, representatives or to lend other Druhts their experience as Druht leaders. Select Gesith, however, also serve as Gerefas (c.f "Wolf Guard Battle Leader", "Lieutenant"). These Gerefas can direct up to a demi-Fyrd deployment, freeing up their Aetheling for other duties.
