The guy on the extreme left is for comparison - what the unit would look like without the cotton flames. (Still have to do edge highlights on these models, but I couldn't wait to try out my cotton idea.)

I made the flames by spray painting a coat of yellow on the cotton to give it some solidity, then affixing the cotton to the model by painting thin superglue on. Then I painted the cotton further by drybrushing on washes: orange wash, yellow wash, flesh wash, nuln oil, agrax earthshade, applied in various orders and amounts. It's a work in progress, learning which washes and in which order, and how much wash to apply at a time.
