  1. Somebody over on Reddit set out their terrain according to the new maps. Looks pretty decent and dense, although I know the cardboard bases will make some people gasp in horror, but that doesn't seem like anything a bit of PVA and some flock or basing paste won't fix.

It’s too similar to the jump pack Intercessors. I get making standard marines unique is hard, but GW could have at least made the jump pack more interesting. The current vanguards have a bit of bling on theirs.

  3. I’d just like the game not to be boring, blobby blob vs blobby blob doing actions and card-game inspired combos. I’d like points and the ability to customize my squads as I see fit, not be held to box-locked loadouts. I’d like to move away from the land of architectural alphabet building tournament game boards. I’d like my Admech to not feel like a boardgame army having to for whatever reason keep my battle line next to my other units to confer a bonus (who thought that up? Heretical AI?)… I’d like to play with my toy soldiers and have the game be about heroic deeds, tactical movement and gameplay, a reason to kitbash and convert, and a reason to keep putting time and money into my army because it feels like I have options. I don’t want or need perfect balance or tournament stats. I need hobby and narrative! Just my humble opinion. Praise the Omnissiah and Sanguinius. #NoVanguardArquebus

Gonna be honest, he doesn't look very 'veterany' to me aside from the paint job. Crux on the helmet, shoulder pad and knee with a little detail.... and that's it? The old vanguard veterans ooozed with detail, showing you that they were battleworn and honoured astartes of hundreds of battles and campaigns. This guy ooozes 'we have vanguard veterans at home' vibes.

  7. Dont let the actual article stop you from complaining. Not all terrain is L shape, there is no L shape terrain measurements given. Four large rectangles – 7” x 11.5” Two large right-angle triangles – 8” x 11.5” Four medium rectangles – 6” x 4” Two long lines – 10” x 2.5” Four short lines – 6” x 2” You dont have to play with the suggested layout (like always) Tournaments will use the most boring layout for fairness (like always) What a group of miserable people

  9. Even when they do chapter weapons, there's barely much decoration on them either. Like for BT there's both Crusaders and Swordbrethren elites. Both can use heavy bolt pistols and chainswords, so both kits have access to them, with the added detail that they're chained to the wielders arm. Yet the weapons themselves are completely bare of any ornamentation. Not a single cross sculpted on any of them. Heck, even Grimaldus' plasma pistol is the exact standard one, just with a chain link to his arm. To link back to the veteran vanguard, the classic vanguard did this for their bolt pistols: Maybe they're afraid to overdo it, but I feel like they land on "do nothing" with the weapons, way way too often.

  12. Well normally I do very wordy log posts that, after a very short amount of time, fade off into obscurity as I battle the never ending procrastination demons that seem to rule my life. This time I am hoping to keep things a bit different. Those that know me around the hobby know I have, over many years, attempted and failed many challenges/projects etc. I have built a reasonalble collection/backlog and am hoping to change that. This, and my subscription to Hachette's latest magazine, will be the guide for this log. My efforts will be divided between four "Operations" OPERATION ICARUS I'll start with Combat Patrol. I've just started recieveing the magazine and, as I tried with Imperium Magazine, I will attempt to keep up with the models as they arrive. A week for each issue and weeks of paint issues being catch up weeks. Obviously I'll need to push further then this if I intend to complete any of my other Operations. I will also attempt ot play through the battles as well as fully fluff out the units as they come and as it does in the magazine. This will be the main focus of my work so as to not build my back log any further. I've named it Icarus due to my belief it will likely follow a similar course as the greek legend. OPERATION LAZARUS Second priority here. Lazarus is completeing partially completed models and challenges from the last few years. A lot of these are simply basing while others are full repaints. This is my Plodding Along vow for the 12MoH, at least to begin with. I started with Company Champion, Windrider Autarch, Windrider Farseer, Howling Banshees x5, Wraithguard x5, Wraithlord x1, Tau Pathfinders x10 + Drones, Tau Devilfish, Tau Breachers x10 + Drones, Eldar Guardians x10 with weapon platform. I've since completed five Guardians but added an Inquisitor and Inquisitorial Henchman Kill Team. OPERATION IMPERIUM This will be the remainded of the Imperium Magazine I have yet to complete. I'll give a more detailed breakdown of this when I get closer but I beleive I was about half way to 2/3 of the way through when I stopped. I may break across in to this occasionally to spice things up a bit as needs. OPERATION CONQUEST Finishing the small amount of the Death Guard I have yet to complete from the Conquest Magazine, as well as repainting the entire Space Marine detatchment, or at least the Primaris parts, from my Star Leopards to my Interdictors. Low priority here. Likely not to happen for a while. But enough words, now pictures. I'll start with the first issue of Combat Patrol; 1x Terminator Captain and 1x Winged Tyranid Prime. I have reposed and kitbashed both so they are different enough looking from my Leviathan Versions. The Prime a I swapped around the wings, swapped the arms for a standard warrior, and reposed the head to be looking more straight on. Simple changes but I think completely changed the model. The Prime will be painted as past of my homebrew Hive Fleet, Hive Fleet Koleous. I'll get some fluff up for them when I get his finshed model up (something else I intend to develop with this log). He will be painted in my green/black/flesh scheme; The Captain involved fishing out some very old terminator and basing bits, with a bit more work involved then the prime; He will be the Captain of the 9th Company of the Interdictors Chapter and the Master of Relics, thus the terminator armour and I felt it approriate to bust out some very old bits. Those whom have seen my work before have likely seen my orange marines before. Their colourscheme is based off of old orange and black terracotta greek pots. I have already started a bit on these so with any luck I'll get some finished (new) models up shortly. Thanks anyone whom follows and fingers crossed I'll actually keep things up this time.

  13. I think I can say that since I wanted to get the best moulds as possible, this was my first time I did it properly. I made a little frame out of LEGOs to prevent the outside of the mould from expanding, paid attention to the quality of the mould (I used tat Instant Mould thingy that I've mentioned in your thread), redit it a couple of times since the grating on the air intakes had defects. For the notches, I had had an 'easier time' - the size was a benefit this time since it allowed me to cheat. I basically used the drills to get the circular bits done. I wouldn't have been able to achieve this with a blade. You're absolutely right. I also think that it's worth mentioning, that seeing others' work posted online is very entertaining. I probably will. Especially given how much more 'love' you're getting from GW. I mean, it's probably ironic or even outhright wrong to state this. I understand that Chaos has been left hanging for many years by GW and there's not comparing the Chaos ranges and Primaris. I just want to emphasise that the few kits Chaos gets are 'done properly' - they're varied, fun, and somehow feel more like newer versions of old concepts and aesthetics. On the other hand, Primaris are kinda bland. They're a redesign instead of a reimplementation (whatever that means) I'm rubbish too - my only GS 'skill' is copying things with press moulds. I can't properly sculpt and, I think, that these straps on these guys are the best I can do detail-wise. And it's taken me a long, loong time to get here. *** And here are the promised photos. Whole squad: Jump Pack design - as you can see, I've enlarged the air intakes by copying bits from the Firstborn packs and extended them to the sides with plasticard and GS. The sergeant will get a fancy aquila. And now for the individual models: Please note the melta bomb, a homage to DoW2 and the old Assault Squad lode-outs. With the guy below, it seems that GW cheated a bit with the knee pad; after removing it, there was a huge gap - something that I haven't experienced before with these sorts of modifications. I decided to add some ribbing. With the seargeant, the final position of the arms may be slightly different - they're tacked on at the moment. I also decided to slightly rotate the power first to get a better angle. Please note that I've added a pistol handle to the holster to... that's a bit pedantic but somehow him not having a gun (with a shield in one hand and a huge fist being the other one) bothered me. And the inside of the shield - it's way more messy than the front:
    11 points
  14. I've now built the front shield, which means that the build is done. Not sure where to fit it on my painting queue, but that's the next step. This definitely doesn't warrant this number of pictures, but I'm going to share anyway, as I found its evolution interesting. First was building the base structure of what I wanted. I drew the basic curved shape I wanted on a piece of cardboard, cut it out, then used it as a template to produce the 4 curved "spars" you can see in the photo above. This allowed me to have them, more or less, the same size or shape. After cutting out the spars, I then figured out where the various horizontal "beams" would go, and cut out notches there. All spars got one at the top, one at the bottom, and one in the middle - the middle one is for the bar on the front of the hull, which is the mounting point for the entire structure. I deliberately didn't glue any of the piece to the front bar as that would make the rest of the build (and painting) more difficult. Here is the basic frame on the front of the chasis. I then covered the outside of the frame with thinner plasticard, starting with the back. Here it is half done. Front was a bit more challenging, due to its curve. Here I used elastics to make sure it stayed against the spars while the solvent dried. This photo and the next one are pretty unnecessary, but are here because I find them interesting. Here is the basic form done, but with no detailing. And here it is with the "trim" done. I pondered for a while whether to leave it like this, or whether to put rivets. Oh, and you can see the "bolter" half of the pintle combi-bolter sitting beside it - it and the combi-weapon portion (the flamer) are magnetized and swappable. The guy in the cupola has one of the new bare heads from the Emperor's Children Infractors/Tormentors box. And here is it finished, with rivets. I decided to go fewer rivets than the trim, and quite like the look. The back has trim, but no rivets. And from straight on. Despite my efforts, the gun port in the shield is not even with the gun, though that's really only visible from straight on. Not exactly sure what happened, as I measured carefully, but I suspect its the downside of not affixing it to the front of the tank as I built it. Anyway, pretty happy with it (and the build as a whole), but I must say I don't enjoy doing the internal structural bit very much - way too much thinking, planning and measuring for my tastes.

  18. Well, in the past there were different rules to mitigate these things. Fearless, "And They Shall Know No Fear", "Daemonic Instability", "Mob Rule" (I think that's what the Ork variant was called, but I might be wrong) and "Synapse" all mitigated or ignored morale rules in different ways. Many of thee rules were pretty flavourful with e.g. Orks and Tyranids only ignoring morale in certain circumstances, which I think was a better way of doing it than just letting them ignore it altogether. Honestly, a lager problem in previous editions was that so many armies had rules that meant morale didn't really affect them most of the time and so morale was kinda-sorta irrelevant in a lot of games, begging the question why it was such a big part of the core rules. That probably contributed to it being basically removed, I think.

  19. Yes, I'm aware. And it's one of the worst things about competitive warhammer at events. When you know in advance how you can hide units, and the distances between LOS blocking and terrain, it impacts how competitive certain units are or aren't, and it introduces an element of predictability into the game. And now this will be a core rule. Edit addition: Maybe I'm in the minority, and maybe my way of looking at the game is no longer in vogue. I think the table layout is part of the narrative of any game, and it should affect your chances of success or failure. Playing identical missions on identical tables doesn't excite me.

  21. Horrible and disappointing. I genuinely try and stay positive about this stuff, especially as I’m not an active 40k player, but this is incredibly poor. It’s a design that both fails to improve on the old Vanguard kits or refines the current design language of Primaris. GW has shown across plenty of releases that it is capable of refreshing old unit and adding new elements to a range. So it’s doubly disappointing that the flagship faction is getting such poor service in this edition. Unless the whole kits has some genius design and a red hot accessory sprue this looks set to be a big L.

  26. I don't care. I want combi-weapons. I don't want to run a lopsided unit of discount Fire Dragons with none of the elegance or a unit of 10 plasma guns. It's funny that having a unit of 5 guys and a veteran sergeant here or there armed with combi-plasma or combi-melta is this massive problem and the solution to that problem is special weapon unit spam. I want Space Marines not discount Aspect Warriors, Horus Heresy bolter-pigs or disgusting Gravis armour. Honestly, calling them Aspect Warriors is a disservice to Aspect Warriors. At least Aspect Warriors are interesting and their Exarchs get flavourful weapon options.

  27. Visual immersion? Personally, I intend to use the GW layouts as advisory rather than prescriptive, and use whatever the scenery that gets placed actually looks like to inform the actual in-game effects. I am a big fan of scenery-heavy tables anyway, though (think 2nd Ed WD battle report style - a good amount of scenery and smaller models on the board). Obviously, this is personal preference and to each their own, etc.

Week in already and I haven't made a vow... Have been working on these guys already for the past couple of days but forgot to post them. Already a day or so behind where I wanted to be for Combat Patrol. Not boding well for when I can't even get two guys done in the time frame I wanted but, no matter. I, Brother Argent, vow for the month of April to complete: 1x Terminator Captain and 1x Winged Tyranid Prime. Most of the last week was spent reposing/kitbashing them so they wouldn't look like the others I already have from Leviathan. Busted out some very old bits on the Captain including an old Terminator head and fist as well as some resin basing bits from when they first released Cities of Death.

  33. I wanted to do the reasonable thing and wait with another post till I get everything ready conversion-wise but I'm too frustrated with how long it takes to wait. As such, with this very special frustration-fuelled eagerness, here's a sneak peak of what you can expect of my Assault Squad: And something that I'm particularly happy with, a scratch-built combat shield (the round notches were particularly challenging, but I thing I managed to get them right): Disclaimer: I'm quite happy with how these guys turned out. For once, I feel like I managed to fully realise the scope of what I had planned for these conversions. The concept included: 1. Enlarging the vents on the jump packs to make them closer to the (frankly superior) Firstborn equivalents. - I didn’t want to use the old jump packs, as I actually prefer the added bulk of the newer ones (the older versions, for whatever reason, look a bit off on Primaris bodies). - Even though I’m not a big fan of the new design, I wanted to maintain some visual consistency across the force—especially elements like the round component on the back of the pack, as well as the additional nozzles and wings—in case I expand the squad with more jump pack Primaris in the future. 2. Avoiding the heel-mounted nozzles, which I find both impractical-looking and, frankly, a bit silly. 3. Adding harnesses—this turned out to be the most challenging and time-consuming part of the project. 4. Modifying the knees/greaves to introduce more variety, which was especially important since these are ETB minis with some repeated poses. 5. Altering the abdominal armour on some of the marines. 6. Building a sergeant with a power fist and combat shield as a homage to the first Assault Squad I ever bought (from the SM Battleforce). *** Once again, let me emphasise: I’m really excited to share these minis with you. I just need a bit more time for the last batch of GS work to cure before I can take proper photos. Now that the project is essentially finished, I’m happy with how it turned out. As usual, though, there were some frustrations along the way. I have to admit that these attempts at “fixing Primaris” and doing GW’s work for them are pretty draining. It took me three full hobby days to do everything I had planned, and despite the cool end result, the process itself felt rather unrewarding. In trying to make the minis look cooler (i.e. the way I think they should have looked in the first place), I ended up cutting into expensive plastic, compromising on detail in some areas, and sinking hours into the process. What really caught me off guard was how tedious the abdominal armour modifications turned out to be. I’m apparently just not quite skilled enough for this kind of fine, fiddly work - and the end result is a bit rough in places, too. The bottom line is this: I think I’m getting too old for this kind of approach and need to re-evaluate my priorities in the hobby. So, I’m making a personal vow here (and you’re all my witnesses): no more conversion-heavy projects like this in the future. I’ll limit modifications to the bare minimum—mostly leg armour tweaks and very simple kitbashes for a single squad (basically the Space Wolves approach)—and focus instead on the part of the hobby I actually enjoy the most: painting. As a final complaint, it’s frustrating that I’ve ended up in a similar situation for the second time—stuck with models that feel “outdated.” The first time was with my Firstborn Marines. Now, I'm stuck with a bunch of MkX Marines. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, it sucks to be a loyalist. The modern CSM kits are so much more varied and fun than the standard MkX that's virtually identical across the range.

  37. Having skipped 9th entirely and only played one game of 10th over two years ago its hard to judge these rule changes for me. Though if pushed I'd say I'm on the skeptical side. I think I'll need to see how this actually all comes together on the tabletop. I do wish GW would just ignore tournaments though. The game should be designed around having fun and telling stories first and foremost. Not pleasing the WAAC crowd. I also can't help the feeling these rules are set up so GW can do a hard rest for 12th in 2029 - though perhaps that's because I'm jaded & bitter and just see corporate greed behind every shadow.
    8 points
  38. Absolutely not, for me this is totally backwards. There should be the normal way to play 40k, and then modification for tournaments. GW created this problem by incorporating the tourney crowd at design level and now they're trying to fix the problem in any way other than undoing the initial mistake.
    8 points
  39. Hmmm I appreciate the effort being put into new terrain. Hidden sounds like a pain but workable, and definitely pairs well with plunging fire. That's good. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about templates for everything. That, I think, takes away some flexibility. What I'm wondering is will every battle require actual templates or can you just denote borders with the terrain bits themselves: something like the rules for Woods in the 8th ed core book. After all, what do I do if I want a battlefield covered in individual trees? Not easy to actually fit them onto a limited number of outlines. Which in a way brings us to the next point. The age of suggested terrain layouts continues. In all fairness this isn't a bad thing. The layouts they showed in the warcomm terrain article look alright. They're mirrored, yes, but it looks to be crawling beyond simple Ls and now making use of more terrain shapes/pieces. So even suggested layouts have some more personality. And this'll be nice for the tournament crowd. What irritates me though is that people will continue to take suggested layouts as law, even in casual games. I play a couple pickup games every month at the FLGS. I'm a casual, narrative-focused player who lets his opponent choose how things will work because I'm just there to throw dice and enjoy some tabletop carnage. But everyone, repeat everyone I've played with in the last year wants to use 'official' terrain layouts. My opponents, even in casual games, want something like a tournament practice or balanced chess match. I'll gladly do that. I'll play that game. But sometimes, just every once in a while, I'd like to drop some stuff on the table, set up something with story (say an important highway that must be kept open, bordered by clusters of ruins) and have a fun, narrative-driven battle. It doesn't have to be unbalanced, just different. But with the suggested layouts just existing, everyone I play wants to stick to the cards. Every game becomes tournament practice, and the time we could be spending doing battle is wasted making precise measurements to get plastic squares into precise alignment. It's a bummer to be sure, but I want to emphasize one point. This is a player problem. GW is doing great. Providing some templates for the tourney people and the competitive players while giving the rest of us the flexibility to play the game as we choose is a great plan. It's the player mindset that is messing things up. People see what's on the mission cards as holy writ and we lose the flexibility GW is trying to give us. That is why I can't be truly excited for the new rules. GW is trying, and I appreciate that, but nothing's really gonna change until the players do.

  40. In 10th, there were a lot of complaints about the "L-shaped terrain" problem... And I always responded the same way: those aren't actual rules from the actual rulebook; they are mere recomendations for tournament play provided in a separate, take-it-or-leave-it PDF document. This seems different- both better and worse. Better because it's more flexible than the L-shaped stuff, but worse because it is now actually a part of the rules and the rulebook. I will say that I found the article had enough gaps that I still need the actual rules in order to determine net positive vs net negative- so other than the observations above, I kind of have to hold my opinions close to the chest until I see more information. But I gotta tell you, I'm running out of patience as I wait for confirmation about whether or not Crusade has a future.

  49. A unit of Space Marines with nothing but bolters. Out of the box intercessors since they don't come with any of the sergeant options. I want it for verisimilitude and narrative reasons. I also dislike the "Vanguard Veteran Weapon" profile for the same reason. There were 9 editions of specific wargear representing specific profiles with silhouettes and shapes you can tell at a glance, but now your gun that's half plasma or melta has the profile of a strange 24 inch range flamer. It's inconsistent because some characters like Azrael get the plasma profile, while everyone else gets the 24 inch flamer. They already had three merged profiles written for them, not sure why they scrapped them. I want the option to still have an army that uses the old Codex organization. A squad of 10 standard issue plasma incinerators is less interesting than a specific type of weapon being handed to a Marine as symbolic reward. Multiple chapters do this with different weapons, Red Scorpions for example are really big on power weapons. Devastators are better in terms of silhouette and organization to all the newly introduced squads. You're free to like the current edition or future editions based on it, but I won't budge on any of this and will carry on engaging with the hobby in a way that pleases me.
