So I am working on putting together my first army, and I figured I should start with 1k and add to it. My strategy would be to have the chaplain and outriders run up the board first and kill what they can/ possibly take some objectives, while the rest of the force slogs up. I know that souping knights is not the best competitive option, but I have the models, and I would like to do so in a way that would not be completely terrible. Is there any way to improve on this?), and still keep the three knights? I also want to stick to primaris units only. Thanks!

Hello all. (Had to create a new account because couldn't recover my old one) I am trying to figure out how to finish out this list. It's a samurai themed chapter remake using only primarus. The captain will be the daimyo and the judiciars will be naginata warrior monks while the champion will be modeled like a sword saint. I got a decent anti horde with the intercessors and solid anti tank with 3 Valiants but I'm not sure how to round out the rest of the list. Anything sword themed is good but I'm not sure if bladeguard would be worth it. Thought about Lieutenants for auras too but I'm not sure what direction to go. Hey All- been away for a long time. Forcing myself to get back in by setting a goal to have a tourney-decent list ready for a Tournament upcoming in July 2021. Ticket is paid for, hotel is reserved- so I am committed at this point in order to help motivate me. So, here is the thing: I suck as a general in general- and I haven't played a single game of 9th edition. My successor chapter uses White Scars rules, stratagems, etc.- keeping things simple by sticking with (what little) I know. My goal is so have a list that follows my theme of "Strike fast, strike hard". Also, they are very devout, and always take a Chaplain for every detachment. I have no expectations of winning my battles- I just want to be competitive and play it well- so the simpler the rules/choices for a unit, the better. I am not taking any large vehicles on purpose- both by theme, and to make the army easier to travel with on a plane. I don't have any new/Primaris models purchased- so I need to bring my army up to speed, while hopefully using a good chunk of existing infantry. Alright, I hope to get some conversation going here. I'm fortunate in that I can play in one of my main groups frequently. I've really enjoyed the White Scars playstyle since 8th edition but I feel like the hype is a little over done as more codexes come out in 9th. For example I find Death Guard just exceptionally difficult to match up against since they inherently just 'shut off' the super doctrine, and they LOVE it when you get within all those negative auraus. The next hurdle for me is Sanguinary guard heavy Blood Angels. Tough match up. He also favours a Leviathan Dread which is a great tool for popping Intercessors. What I plan to try is to use my new Reiver LT to manipulate obsec. I usually use Assault intercessors for troops with hammers, but I'm considering regular intercessors for the shooting ability of the assault bolters. The only thing I'm certain of is Bladeguard + Thunderstrike (new speeder for fun) + 3 MM ATV's. Anyone have any advice to round out the list? Some hot takes on some good WS units?

Are 7-9 Thunderhammer attacks enough, and go resiliency? Is taking two weapons to be cheap and take on a bit of everything? Not sure what the best course of action here? Foot Characters and Bladeguard push the center or flank. Captain, Vanguard, Attack Bikes, and Inceptors hunt down hard targets. Overall I am liking this, it feels like three solid strike groups, each capable of playing the Anvil and two groups the Hammers. The Bladeguard Ancient is the only unit I question in the list, likewise the Chapter Master upgrade isn’t necessary, as well as two of the Lightning Claw Vanguard. That would beg the question what to do with 181 pts. A Dreadnought is out, there just isn’t enough target saturation for him. Only other thing I can really think of is a second 5-man Bladeguard squad. Also toyed with the idea of making the Vanguard Sergeant Master-Crafted. Thoughts, suggestions?- 4 replies

Hi all, I'm getting back into 40k after a nearly 20 yr hiatus and am about 75% of my way through painting my marines. I love the White Scars playstyle and iconography, but for fluff reasons, I would rather build my own chapter rather than pure WS. I appreciate this probably isnt the best for playstyle ( no Khan for example) but it means I can paint how I want. I originally was going to just run Inheritors of the Primarch and play exact WS but I then thought of running Born Heroes & Whirlwind of rage or swapping one out for Hungry for Battle. The only negatives I see is that it would be a little bit slower and can't fall back and charge being a big one, but based on the below list, my approach is already very fast and can get around the board at speed. It is very reactive with heavy board presence and with the ST it becomes a melee beast on T3. I'm open to any critique of this approach, as I've only played one game since being back into this, so the pure WS may be a much better option. Haven't been able to get a game of 9th yet due to various lock downs and restrictions but was looking for some feed back on the list below. I'm not a competitive player but want to be able to have good games against a diverse set of players. In addition I want to run an only first born army because it's a DIY chapter and head cannon. The current plan is to run them as inheritors of the primarch; have the Tactical Squads and Razorbacks hold the deployment zone whilst the Vanguard Vets move up to mid board with the librarian. The bike squads support the Vanguard Vets and the Landspeeders try and cause maximum disruption in the opponent's deployment zone. The terminators teleport in where needed. So after some thoughts and "soul searching" with a White Scars succesor army, and a little consideration with the models I currently have and are gonna buy, I have come up with an army which I feel balance pretty well. So, I'm tweaking my army for 9th. Primaris only. Successor tactics using whirlwind of rage. And......reivers are starting to look pretty attractive in my pure infantry force. So far I have: - the objective holding force: 2 units of eliminators, 3 units of incursors, 2 units of intercessors - the turn 2 wave: 6 deep striking inceptors, 5 encircled aggressors, 3 encircled eradicators - the Flankers: 6 outriders, biker chaplain (who, if hes as expected, will be father pain when needed or popping to hit and to wiund auras for combat units). Got probably 220 points left over. 10 reivers with grav chutes being a turn 3 wave, with gene wrought might, the chaplain dishing out those reroll auras if hes still alive But reivers have been bad pretty much since day 1. Do I suck up the CP to get some extra force org slots for eradicators/plasma inceptors?

Hi all. Just wondering if any of you have had mileage out of a full squad of 5 Company Vets on Bikes (Legends)? For fluff reasons, I am thinking of running them with Power Sword & Plasma Pistol, backed up by a Company Champion on Bike (with WS Relic Sword) and Ancient on Bike with Eagle Banner. If able to get them all into combat, that gives 11 S5 AP-3 attacks from the Vets, plus 4 S6 AP-2 2D from the Champion, because of the Eagle Banner giving +1S to all within 6 inches. Then add on any Charge bonus attacks, etc. I know it seems an expensive investment (even more so if I take an Apothecary on Bike), but could it be a useful sledgehammer? The rest of my list would be 3*5 Scouts in Speeder Storms, JP Chaplain, JP Librarian in a Battalion, the above few paragraphs with a Chapter Master Khan on Bike (Wrath of Heavens relic), Chaplain on Bike as a Vanguard. Rounded off by a Khan on Bike, 2*8 Chainsword Bike Squad (each with Attack Bike) and a trio of double MM Speeders (backed up by Chapter Master Khan for full re-rolls). Let me know if you have any thoughts. I'll try and get the whole list down in Battlescribe at some stage.

Hello, Long time White Scars fan + player here, played them alot in 5th and am slowly returning to 40k with 9th edition. I think I've loved them since I was introduced to them in Index Astartes in WD140. Anyway, I bought the White Scars supplement and thought I'd try something else than what seems to be the go-to WS units - Bladeguard, assault intercessors, Kor'sarro etc. I got a strong feel for the fifth brotherhood, which focuses on Stormseers, Vanguard (assuming this means the Phobos units) and generally *hitting a target with everything at once*. So I thought I'd base the army around two Phobos Librarians and try to utilize their powers as much as possible. One using Temporal Corridor and Tenebrous Curse, one using Blasting Gale/Ride the Winds/Storm-wreathed. I like the idea of crowd control, mass medium range shooting, before moving in and finishing them off - standard mongol procedure, if you will. I got one lib, 2x5 assault bolter intercessors and 3 outriders so far and am pretty set for 6 plasma inceptors, the rest is up for discussion. Thoughts?

Hi folks, So I have a old SM army of first born that has not got much player in last few years. Thinking of whipping it out and playing as a shooting white scars army. Yes you read that right, shooting scars. The idea is to use the mobility of the army/outflank to complement the shooting elements. Then come turn 3 the army has natural combat ability. I think one of the most competitive builds for all space marine armies, but especially for White Scar Successors, will be something like the following: WS Successor Traits: -Hungry for Battle (+1 to charges) -Born Heroes (+1 to Hit in melee after charging) -10 Vanguard Vets, all with Storm Shield/Lightning Claw load out -5 Company Vets with 5 x Storm Shielf/Combi-Flamers load out -Chief Librarian with “Ride the Winds” and “Storm-Wreathed” powers, +1 to cast WL Trait -Ancient with “Banner of the Eagle” Relic -Chapter Champion, re-roll failed charges WL trait, “Burning Blade” relic -Apothecary -2 x Drop Pods Starting as early as turn 1, you can bring in both Drop Pods, clear away chaff/screens with the Company Vets shooting, use the Strat to make the Vanguard in the Assault Doctrine, cast “Ride the Winds” on the Vanguard (WC6, effectively WC5 with the Chief Librarian’s WL Trait), and then make a 6” charge (thanks to the Hungry for Battle trait and Ride the Winds power) that is re-rollable (thanks to the Chapter Champion’s WL Trait) and is taken on 3D6, remove the lowest D6 (thanks to the “Fierce Rivalries” Strat). If successful (which is very likely, given all the buffs above), the Vanguard then charge with 41 x S5 AP-3 Dmg2 attacks, all of which hit on a 2+ (from their Born Heroes trait) and re-roll to wound (thanks to Lightning Claws). Statistically, this should get you 34-35 hits and, depending on the target, 25 dead Power Armor Marines, 10-11 dead Gravis Marines, 10-11 dead TDA Marines, 30-31 dead Ork Boyz, 2 dead T7/T8 3+ save equivalent vehicles (i.e. Rhinos, Leman Russes, Fire Prisms, Hammerheads, Repulsors, etc.), or 28-29 unsaved wounds on an Imperial Knight. Even better, if the enemy does survive to strike back (or shoot back), then you have 20 x T4 Wounds, all protected by a 2+/4++, a 6+++ FNP (from the Apothecary), and the ability to both heal a wounded Vanguard Veteran up to full wounds and revive a dead Vanguard Veteran the next turn (again, from the Apothecary). Future turns, rinse and repeat with this battle group into the enemy lines (i.e. shoot to clear a path with the Company Veterans, charge with the Vanguard and the Champion, support with the Librarian, Ancient, and Apothecary).

Finally got my hands on the codex to point up a list I've had in mind for a while as I've got to grips with 9th. White Scars Battalion Primaris Chaplain on bike - master of sanctity, wise orator Khan on bike Primaris librarian - ride the winds, spirits of chogoris 5 incursors 5 incursors 5 incursors 5 aggressors 5 bladeguard Primaris Apothecary - chief apothecary, selfless healer 5 inceptors - plasma 3 outriders 3 outriders 3 eradicators 3 eradicators Chaplain pairs with outriders for reroll hits and wounds on their silly number of attacks. Khan runs with plasmaceptors for reroll 1s on overcharge. Scars having a 1 CP retreat and shoot strat for them is especially useful. These and the outriders hit flanks. Apothecary with aggressors because FNP and rez. They'll push midfield. Bladeguard with librarian. Turn 2 on they're moving 9 inches minimum with +2 to charge. Again, going up the middle, unless they encircle against an opponent with a heavy backfield. Eradicators have good threat range from advance and charge but can be protected with encircle. Secondaries: Engage on all fronts is a solid 10 points for me. Deploy scramblers or raise banners depends on opponent. The new progressive marine secondary is something I'll try but falling back to charge is kinda a thing here, which will cost me 1 VP per round. While we stand we fight is Khan, chaplain and apothecary. Questions for the fraters: - chaplain litany choice is completely open thanks to base litany and chapter litany. Mantra of strength is a good toolbox choice for when he wants to hulk out. What about the second? Canticle of hate is attractive because of the vox espiritum changes. Could tag a fair few units with that +2 charge bubble. Should I be looking at anything else? - warlord traits. At minimum I've got 2 characters with traits, so I'm spending 1CP. I could take another because on the new hero of the chapter. Chogoriann storm, master rider and master of snares are all attractive on the Khan. Is it worth it? - relics. Benediction of fury on the chaplain is obvious, but as highlighted, vox espritum now affects litanies and 9 inch auras are massive. Spending CP for other relics - wrath of heavens on the Khan, mantle of the stormseer on the librarian, plume of the plainsrunner on the apothecary - im more than willing to drop the 2CP for 3 relic selections where am i going to get my best bang for buck? - there's 90 points left in this list. I can neatly drop in a unit of eliminators and im quite character heavy for the assassinate secondary, but is there anything else I could look at? Incursors to heavy intercessors is 45 points (though jury's out on them for me), 2 more eradicators is 80 points and im relying on them to really do some work. Chief librarian upgrade so he can join in the trait and relic game maybe. I'm open to opinions - even just adding the 6th aggressor and inceptor for combat squad potential, or turning the 3 incursor units into 20 autobolter intercessors
