OMG Post #8

So Morticon reveals his hand! And, he picks a very unfluffy subject. A fallen BA character? That just never happens. The most stalwart of all the Emperor’s finest would never heed the Call to Chaos. Lucky for me my personal fall to the dark side is all but complete.

And here’s where I’m at with showing Nurgle’s more compassionate side:

I’m hoping he’ll be done this weekend. I’ll bet he will be by at least 90% or so. The question still remains, will he ever see the tabletop? I have been working with lists using a “counts-as

Barret post the second

After some quality time with the new Chaos sprues, I came up with this unsavoury renegade to become the first Champion of a new warband, and my Call of Chaos entry. Ten days left? I work best only work under pressure.

Aurelius finally starts... (Post 2)

The competition for the mod competition is looking pretty tough already! Very nice models there, guys. :tu: I wonder what the frater will come up with? What is it - a week to go? Sounds about time to push my Scions of Dorn scouts, veterans and bolter-wielding Deathwatch vets to one side and get shifting. :)

To be honest I am a dyed in the wool loyalist when it comes to painting, and I think in all the years I have been in the hobby this will be the first traitor / renegade marine I have ever done. Part of the reason for the late start is that no inspiration struck me until last night.

I wouldn't call it a 'plan' yet... perhaps it would be better to call it a 'pla'. ;)

Anyway, I was digging through the old bitz box while watching Serenity last night, and I decided on doing an Order Encarmine renegade. These are the arch-enemies of my own Scions of Dorn, and their fall to Slaanesh has been documented in IA: Scions of Dorn and Planetfall: Alcmene (see the sig for links) as well as this year's Crusade for Antioc Arena of Death. The remaining renegade scum have captured an Inquisitorial Black Ship, made a barely averted attempt to Exterminatus the planet of Antioc, and now are being pursued through the warp by fleets of both sides who want to see them strung up by the mivonks. :P

But what have they been up to? An Inquisitorial Black Ship would have all manner of dark secrets and restricted, blasphemous texts to be pored over. They have nothing to lose, and this would be the time for them to really cast off the shackles of pretence to loyalty.

So I dallied with a marine with sonic weaponry... but in the end the Posessed boxed set I bought last week won out, and I made him a former assault marine that has gone a bit 'Raptory', and sprouted biomech wings instead.

It was a good job I decided not to make him a NL raptor variant as SCC has tied that up tight, but checking the thread I see that Lord Rags has used the same winged effect... Great minds, eh? :D At least I am going for different weapons, giving him a pair of lightning claws!

So I have glued him together apart from the right claw, and then it will be time to go at him with GS or other convertables, put him jumping off something high, and put up some pics. Although Joker has really cornered the market in high perches with his mini of Kurze... :o Damn you and your talent! :P

This nameless assault squad sergeant really needs a name - something germanic would be appropriate for the Order Encarmine - and I will have to think how to make the red and black order Encarmine colourscheme different from the Corsairs, but at least I have started!

Expect more updates on this guy later.

Aurelius.

Aurelius Post 3

Hmmm, well, the big high perch for this guy may have to be sacrificed on the altar of not much time left, so here are a couple of WIP shots.

Tomorrow night it will be time to slap some paint about.
OMG Post #9

I see we have another contender for the best use of the new winged backpacks! Nice use of bits Aurelius. Seems like transcending into the dark side wasn’t too difficult after all.

This will be my final mod post. The mini is done. He just needs to be dull coated. I won’t post pics until after the 1st.

All-in-all, I’m pretty happy with the results.

+++Pic Update: By far not the prefect picture, the image lost a little in the zoom.

Here's a sneak preview of the finished model.

-OMG

Yeah, I'm doomed. Doomed. DOOOOOOOOOOMED!

Even still, it's a good reason to force me to paint stuff.

This is my first serious attempt to paint white armour, and I think it's working out fairly well. The photos make the shading, such as it is, a lot starker than it actually is, sadly, and the white itself needs a lot of touching up. Before I do that, though, I'm going to move on to the shoulders and arm, so that I don't have to touch things up twice.

In an odd tanget, this scheme is an accidental throwback to my very first 40k army, a Chaos warband called the "Snow Daemons". They were called that because I only had white primer and was an even worse painter than I am today, so white Chaos Marines made perfect sense. Hopefully this guy will turn out better.

Aurelius Post 4

Are you down to calculating the time remaining in hours yet, Barret? I am! :)

Progress last night was limited to basecoating black and then building up the red in the areas where I thought it should go - mainly on the armour panels while leaving the border areas black. Trouble is that while I commonly paint red for the gauntlets of my Scions of Dorn (they are Crimson Fist successors, after all), the trick of painting large areas red is something I have far less experience at. I also somehow managed to approach it in a completely different method than I usually would, so it is either going to come out as a stunning success, or more likely will have to be overpainted and done again from scratch. ^_^

Hopefully I will get more WIP pics up tonight after I layer it, with highlights / shade and deepen the red some more, but what is on my mind at the moment is how to approach the wings.

This is what I like about these PC&A contests - I always end up doing something new and even if it doesn't work, at least I have learned something from the experience. :P

Daeothar, post 5:

A Tzeentch of pace will do you good the voices said. Directional lighting in a tone you've never tried will look good they said. Extra time was freed, so there's plenty of opportunity to go through the process step by step. Plenty of time!

So why was I sitting at my desk earlier this evening, staring at a white undercoated miniature wondering where the time had gone?

Dang changer of ways put me through some timewarping experience and all of a sudden I find myself at the beginning of the end of the competition, that's why!

Well, I've finally gotten into gear and got the first colour on my entry. Hopefully it will not be too little too late. I would like to say; time will tell, but let me tell you; time flows in strange patterns around these here parts as of late, so keep your fingers crossed. For all I know, I could blink my eyes and all of a sudden find myself facing the release of 40K 7th ed! Oddball godling with his birdhead *mutter mutter*...

Welcome to the last minute caffeine and adrenaline club, Daeothar! You are in good company :P

The un-named Raptor sergeant is continuing apace. I have had the Order Encarmine described with red and black armour for years now, and as I at last come to actually paint one I have to try to differentiate them from the Red Corsairs colourscheme. This will have to do for now.

So this is the red under development. Foundation Mechrite Red seemed to help the coverage problems, followed by thin layers of blood red, black ink in the cracks for definition and a quick Solar Macharius orange highlight. It needs a tidy up to blend the highlight, but I am pleased with how it is going. When this is finished, painting that Scions techmarine should be a piece of cake.

number6: Post 1

First entry! But that's only because it took me all the way until this last Sunday, the 23rd, to have all the pieces I wanted to put this thing together. Ironic, because really it's a butt-simple "conversion".

I'm very unskilled, naive, and inexperienced for conversions, yet I wanted to do something for the contest. So I based my idea on the Lord of Tzeentch model for Fantasy. I decided to put together a Tzeentch sorcerer, with a familiar, riding along on that flaming/melting disc.

The pieces:

* Tzeentch Lord Disc

* Ahriman

* Tzeentch Familiar

I picked Ahriman because, IMHO, he's exactly what a Tzeentch sorcerer should look like. Besides, it looked to me like he would fit pretty nicely on top of the disc without too much work. :pinch:

I also bought a round 60 mm base and picked through some rocks from the side of our house to use on the base. I wanted a low flat one, in particular, upon which I could perch the familiar, as though it had just landed there in advance of the sorcerer himself.

So this last Sunday, with all the pieces finally obtained, I got to work...

* I assembled the disc and greenstuffed the hole in the top where the Fantasy model would normally go so it was smooth all over.

* I attached Ahriman's staff arm, but left the rest of the components unattached for easier painting.

* I used clippers and files to trim a shallow arc out of the Ahriman's robes so his feet would actually touch the surface of the disc.

* After spraying everything black, I trimmed a flying post so it would fit into the shallow base I had, and then glued it into place. Then I painted the base Graveyard Earth and selected an arrangement of rocks that fit around the post in what I thought was a reasonable grouping. I wanted to ensure that the flat rock I had selected would extend far enough for me to fit the familiar on it while still leaving room for the spikes of the disc. I also wanted to leave at least some of the base clear of larger rocks so I could add in sand, smaller rocks, and/or flock. (As of this writing, I'm still not certain how I want to finish the base.)

* After dinner, I gathered up the basecoated pieces and painted the disc. I wanted the disc to be a bright orange with a yellow/white sun on top, blending to reds and oranges in the rear. I've never used so much of these colors before, and it took many more layers than I was expecting to build up a solid, even tone. I hadn't been thinking much of the foundation paints, but now I think I'll have to get them!

* As of today, I've managed to put the basic colors on Ahriman's body, arm, and backpack (which I just attached to the body this morning after letting the paint dry overnight). I'm keeping the colors simple, but complementary to the disc. His robe is liche purple, the armour is regal blue with gold trim, with lots of bone/ivory bits being painted bleached bone.

Now I need to paint Ahriman's head and his familiar, which I think I'll paint similar to the Lord of Change. After that's all done and the head is attached, I'll apply some washes to the the models and then pick out highlights with a combination of drybrushing and targeted paint.

It'll be a struggle to get it all done, but I think I'll just barely make it. My only regret is that the base won't be as nice as it probably should. I won't be painting any of the rocks, so I hope it'll still look good in the end.

+++++

EDIT:

I have just been reminded that the maximum base size for this contest is 40mm. Which means I'm throwing out the familiar and will have to come up with something else to do with the base. Now it will probably be just minimal flock, unless some kind of inspiration hits me in the next few days. :P

Finished the red highlight blending, blocked out the borders in black, picked out the piping in silver, did the shoulderpad chaos stars in bronze / gold with chestnut inking and mithril highlights, painted the the skulls and started the work on the bone effect for the wingtip claws.

So, lots of time-consuming, fiddly details, but I don't know how well they show up in the WIP pics. :confused:

Well, hopefully 4th time is a charm. Had issues breaking some plastics and not being happly with Khali's previous look. It will be a miracle for me to finish before the comp is over but I'll be using all personal spare time to complete.

Oooo… nice update Rags. Very Zerk'licious. That’s a big step forward from your original WIP. There’s a real strategy on submitting your entries late in the game. Not only can you best evaluate your competitors, I can’t hop in a plane and drop by your place to sabotage your models.

I look forward to the end result. -OMG

@Lord Rags - Khali really is taking shape now, with a very nice piece of posing. :tu: Those posessed wings are a really nice piece that I am sure will appear on a lot of models in PC&A over the coming months, and sorry about unintentionally choosing the same wings as you did. :lol:
