Repainting the Fallen

Widowmaker

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the comments guys.... I appreciate y'all taking the time to look at these.

@kanan - Thanks, I appreciate the encouragement

Thanks for the suggestions about the paint job folks. I appreciate it. Course, if you notice, I now have one vote for each of the three options.

I think you're conspiring to keep me confused

@Lorenzen - yeah - the bolters will be lightened up when I go back and fix the highlights on the armour as well. I haven't quite figured out which colour yet - red seems too 2nd edition - blue might blend into the armour, grey might blend into the robes.... We'll see. I'm liking the way your Pre Heresy are going by the way - very cool. Can't wait to see more of them.

@Durus - Yeah, that's a good point about the white being too clean. Food for thought....

@Heru Talon - Thanks... I hadn't thought of that, but I wonder if it's not a little bright? What do you think?

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Cheers

I really like option 1! The old school paint job combined with the fact that it looks fantastic makes it a solid winner.

Can you *please* post a better pic (lighting) of the whole guy? I've gotten my Fallen Angels (mix of metal/plastic DA Vets) assembled and basecoated and am trying to decide how to proceed too!

Been a while since I checked this thread. I'm happy to see that they're coming along nicely, Widowmaker. My vote is for red + red -- I agree with an earlier poster that it looks more menacing.

I also think you should consider shadow grey for the highlights -- it'll give a nice blue-grey effect. How about a blend of dark blue and shadow grey for the first (fainter, wider) highlight, and very thin, sparing pure shadow grey for the final (sharper, thinner) highlights?

Wow....

Ok, thank you everyone who responded and helped me out in my moment of indecision. So I got a test model painted up. As Squiggoth said previously, I should maybe have done it before I started, but, better late than never, right?

@Wendigo - Thanks for the advice about the highlighting. I tried it out below. Is this what you meant? It is pretty close to what I want, so barring suggestions, I think I will stay with this. It is closr to what I had envisioned originally, so I'm fairly happy with it at this point.

I have decided to go for the old school Fallen - that is to say Version 1 above, or for those who don't want to check back, the red symbol and silver studs.

I liked the White, but the I think the folks who said that it wasn't chaosey enough were right. A little too clean, a little too like the loyalists I also have. However, if I add a few "newbies" in green armour, I may use the white on them.

I seriously considered the red symbol with red studs, but when I looked at them in real life, the studs seemed too bright - almost like they were advertising their presence... Something I'm not sure the astute, tactically aware first legion would do :P

So... here is my test mini... no base yet, but what do you think?

@Lorenzen - Yeah, I know what you mean about the canon of pre-heresy changing so much. Pain in the arse when we need to repaint a bunch of minis to keep up with fluff changes. I recall an old RT pic of a bunch of DA's charging a position en masse - they're all wearing the red symbol and silver studs. However, the latest art work has them closer to yours with the white. And of course the new book has them with White Robes... GAH!!!!

I dunno. I reckon if 1) I could paint like you and/or 2) I was using the grey highlights, I'd have gone with the white shoulder pads too, but I think this works. (colour scheme also fits in nicely with my RT ultras :) )

As always folks, thanks for tuning in, and comments and criticism are very welcome.

I appreciate all the advice and suggestions so far.

Cheers

its looking nice, the different highlights work well to distinguish what is marine, robe and bolter.

id suggest dulling down the metals though, they look a bit too shiny in comparison to the rest of the marine imo, i find that adding a very watered down wash of chesnut ink & green ink (about 50/50) can work nicely.. although its always best to experiment on something expendable first.. also if you dont already, try basing your metals with tin bitz before you use boltgun..

other than that keep up the good work!

Thanks guys.

@Lorenzen - Yeah, the metals were a rush job and need to be re-done from scratch. But thanks for the tips - I haven't tried that mix before and I'll give it a whirl.

@Durus - hmm... Interesting idea with the snow... Not sure what I'm gonna do for the bases. The Daemon Prince is on an industrial/cityscape base, so I was kinda thinking of staying with that. But I'm not sure.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Oh, sorry. I must have missed that bit :P . But it doesn't mean you can't do a snowy citycape base

I just was thinking about snowbases as i usually think of the base as a kind of "canvas" for the miniature itself. With such dark colours they would really stand out against a light "background". On second though white bases might distract the eye from the marine. Maybe. I'd have to try that to be sure... ;)

If you do a cityscape with snow it would tone the contrast down a little.

It was just a thought i wanted to share, though. ;)

Nah... you didn't miss it. The last photo I posted of the Daemon Prince was unbased... I haven't gotten around to fixing his scythe yet, so haven't put photos up in the Hall of Honour yet. But.... Yeah, it's on a cityfight base.

The snow is a good idea, especially in small amounts, and you're right - it would certainly be a nice contrast from boring grey.

I appreciate the input Durus (God knows I need help - At least that's what I'm told  ) I will definitely bear the "touch of frost" idea in mind when I come to base these guys.

My only other idea was to something similar to what Master Toddius did and have spacehulk/industrial style bases.

Watch this space I guess, more will be posted soon.

:P

Cheers

I really like the direction you went with the armor highlighting. It's a nice twist on the color scheme. The metals seem a bit rough in some spots. Namely the forehead symbol. You might try retouching those areas a bit. I also agree with weathering down the metals as well. They're somewhat distracting from all the great work you've done on the rest of the model.

Looking forward to seeing a unit of these guys :tu:.

Greetings one and all,

So, it's been some time since the last post and since Crimbo is upon us, I imagine it will be some time before the next. However, I have made some progress.

The first of the Fallen squads is nicely underway...

Also I have some terminators for you to take a shufti at.... Bear in mind that these are seriously WIP at the moment.

Long Range Squad....

And the assault squad

Amongst other things, I need comments and criticism on this guy.

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s106/widowmakerphotos/Games%20Workshop/Warhammer%2040K/Chaos/Marines/Fallen/Fallen%20DeathWing/In%20Progress/P1010581.jpg

My idea is a squad member who started big, but was warped out of his armour. He has no problems toting the heavy flamer even without the TDA suit.... Where I fall down is how to finish him. I'm going to add a tabard, but what else? How do I finish his neck?

Comments, criticism and suggestions are always welcome.

Cheers

I really like what you have done so far. Great work! :D

An idea for your big guy: If you are going to add a tabard anyway, you could model him like he has "grown out" of his DA robe. There would be torn pieces of cloth around his body (à la Hulk ;) ) and you could hide the neckjoint under a DA-style hood. Would make him look sinister and stress the DA background.

Reminds me to get back to work on my own stuff again ^_^

Rise up, rise up.... yes, yes....

IT LIVES!!!!!!

:P

Actually it hasn't been that long since I posted to this thread - I guess with how busy the holidays were it just feels much longer.

So, I've been doing a little more work polishing up the termis before I paint them and setting up a second squad of troops.

And then taking them apart.

And then redoing almost all of them. Oh well.

I don't have time to put everything up just now, but as a teaser, I thought I'd put up the heavy weapons termi that I asked about before. Following Durus' idea, I added robes to him in the "Hulk SMASH" kind of motif.

Let me know what you think.

Edit - apologies for the lousy photos... Camera seems to be playing silly buggers. Oh well.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments.

@Tsuro - Not sure if the robing will be a one off. I keep looking at them and thinking they'd look good with robes, but can't figure out which ones to put robes on to... It's a problem of cluttering up what detail is already there. Might add it to the scythe cariers though. We'll see.

Anyone have thoughts on which ones would look good with more robes?

@Midas - An awesome attempt at alliteration :) Thanks for the compliment

More to follow soon folks. Thanks for looking.

Alrighty then...

Since I am still not sure about whether I should add more robes to the termi's - and if so, to which ones, I am plowing forward with the Chaos squads. There's not a great deal to see as only the blue highlights have been done (a little more blue than before, but there you go). More to follow shortly.

The Squad

Dark Angels?

That's all for now. Comments and criticism always welcome, as are any ideas about which termi's should have robes.

Wow, I absolutely love the heavy Flamer model. What bits did you use for him?

I was planning to do a small army of Fallen Angels, so this does influence me a great deal.

Have you got any sources where you get insperation/ideas? Or just pictures of fallen angels would be nice. ;)

Thanks in advance mate.:)

Thanks Pandora,

The Heavy flamer model is a little of this, a little of that...From top down -

Daemon Prince head with horns removed

Belakor's Torso with left arm removed

Standard Chaos Terminator heavy flamer hand

Chaos Spawn claw with chaos terminator shoulder pad

Obliterator legs

Green Stuff and some modelling chain.

Unfortunately I don't really have any definitive souces to give you for the inspiration. Mostly the inspiration comes from ideas taken from various places on this board , or from GW literature and pictures. Several folks have very nice pre-heresy Dark Angel or Fallen Dark Angel armies - Lorenzen is one, kotobuki has some nice unforgiven - I know I'm forgetting several others, for which I apologize both to you and those with the cool models whose ideas I totally ripped off :) . I also found some of the artwork in the new chaos codex to be very helpful. Basically after that, I took what I liked and tried to recreate as best I could using the tools and bitz at hand.

Originally, I had a solid idea as to how I wanted them to look (Obvious nods to the Dark Angel models, no imperial symbols, but also no obvious mutations, except perhaps in the case of Characters like the daemon princes). But as you can see, when the new chaos models came out that didn't last long.

I am still trying to keep them away from the chaos stereotype though - no horns, few tentacles etc.

Some of the best articles I found for doing this well were actually the ones discussing the 13th company (Yeah - I still have all the old White Dwarf magazines from back then) if you can find them online I'd recommend having a shufti at those.

Another group of sources that I used, and this might sound weird, were actually Word Bearer artwork and soul drinker fluff and models. When I intially put this army together, I ran it under the old Word Bearer rules - this helped me with my theme of not imperial, but still believers.

Anyway, that kinda rambled a litlle, but it's better than working, and I hope some of it helped, and thanks again for the comments.

Cheers

And now for something a little different....

The first of 4 - or 6 - or more if the budget will stretch

So does he get the job done as a fallen raven? Or does he need to be more chaotic?

Comments and criticism welcome as always.
