My Land Raider Variants (PV?)

Just a quick update on progress on my shadowsword hybrid. It's 95% completed. All I need to do is to add a huge storm shield at the front (large imperial eagle and lots of flames). I'll post a picture in the next few days (when the milliput dries!!).

As usual, I have already moved onto my next project, a hellhound/Land raider variant!

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000096-1.jpg

I'm toying with the idea of scultping flames in milliput all over the white plasticard template at the front and top, but I think I'm going to leave it alone and just use paint to give a good 3D effect on the flames.

I have no idea of the PV for this. I thought that if I removed the transport capacity, extra promethium could be carried making all guns to be fired each turn and even further than normal (due to the extra fuel tank at the back)? What do you think?

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000099-1.jpg

The finished fuel tank ( a kid's pencil sharpener!) will have rivets around the white strip of plasticard. Can I just add, the paint job is from a previous owner (bought on ebay for

I have finally finished my Shadowsword Hybrid (I call it "STuG" after the German Panzer in WW2).

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000263.jpg

The Stormshield has been great fun to build. The Imperial Eagle has been made out of plasticard as were the flames. I then built up the flames with milliput to give it a slight 3D effect. I am really happy with how it has turned out.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000271.jpg

Here's a shot of the back of the stormshield. As seen elsewhere on my skull Land Raider, I have covered the back with skulls. To give more realism, I also stuck lots of rivets around the frame. I think this turned out really well. I decided to add magnets to assist in storage and painting.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000264.jpg

Here's a front plan view. You can see all the extra milliput, plasticard and rivets on this one. Though this project has been time consuming, I have enjoyed the task for the majority of the time. I just wish I had the time AND painting skills to do this justice. It will probably sit now gathering dust in my outhouse until I pluck up the courage to start painting again.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000267.jpg

This shows a view of the front plan. You can see the Stormshield support struts that house magnets (clearly labelled so I didn't stick them the wrong way round!).

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000265.jpg

I do love the extra armour on this one! I just need to decide which sponson weapon would look best. Any suggestions?

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000269.jpg

I'm not entirely happy with the back of the STuG. I like the triple powerplant engine, but I do wish I had thought it through before I stuck it down. I stuck it were it is to reduce the outline and make it look more streamline. With hindsight, I feel the powerplant should have been installed higher. This would allow another dozerblade to have been installed at the back to help stabilise the tank when firing. Unfortunately, I have been unable to accomodate this.

I have 2 thunderfire cannons which will be my next project. I wish to make them into sponsons as I have seen already on B & C. Once finished, I have enough parts for 3 more Land Raiders and wish to make my own version of the Achilles. My Achilles may end up being armed with 3 Thunderfire cannons !!

Also in the very near future:

More Extra armour - Designs to be finalised.

I have 2 more Bulldog Battlegear Pewter badges on their way. These will look good stuck on a Land Raider somewhere. More news in the near future.

Has anyone got any suggestions/designs they would like to see on the side of a Land Raider? I'm open to idea's.

I am liking the new Witchfate Tor, but I'm not prepared to shell out the money. I'm surprised that no one has started selling the bits yet. Does anyone know of any bits supplier that has both the Witchfate Tor and Fortress of Redemeption in stock? Please PM if you are aware.

Speak soon, Brother Morgan.

Just a quick update. Christmas hols and looking after children have slowed my building, but my ideas stop me from sleeping at night! I'm doing the usual juggling act - building Four different land raiders at the same time!

Land Raider 1: I have spent 4 hours today building 1 Thunderfire cannon sponson (looks similar to the forgewords mark 2 variant). I plan on building a WW1 style Land Raider in the very near future. The plan is to use tank treads bought from Blood & Skulls Industry (machinator248 has built some unbelievable fellblades over on Dakka Dakka - I highly recommend you check out his conversions - Tom has motivated me to carry on this craziness) and have the treads go all around (I've done this before on my Ares). The extra side armour will have the usual flames all over. Still undecided on what weapon the turret will have. I have decided not to go with another thunderfire cannon in the turret (i.e. 3 thunderfire cannons on one tank) as I think this is overkill.

Land Raider 2: This will be a weapons change for my existing Shadowsword hybrid. I have 2 thoughts:

1) Hellcannon - Thanks Warhammer for this one - PVC tubing has already been bought. Lots of skulls all over outside and inside at the mouth of the cannon from milliput. I'm still working out how to drill the holes all around the mouth (like a siege demolisher cannon). I will attach the hellcannon onto a new front glacis with a huge skull. I will then have to build a new shield to accomodate this.

2) Huge plasma cannon (Titan size). Still working out the details on this one. The cannon is a very odd shape and I have seen something I could use as the basic shape, but it will involve a lot of sculpting. This may go on the back burner for a while.

Land Raider 3: Space Marine statue mounted on top. I bought the honoured Imperium statue as a Christmas prezzie to myself. I can picture the statue mounted hoziontally on the top (bit like lieing in state - like Lenin). The fluff will be an ancient honoured space marine only comes out in dire times etc. etc.

I want a hull mounted Vulcan mega bolter mounted underneath the plinth.

Land Raider 4: Eagle over whole of top of Land Raider. From a plan view, think of an eagle's back over the whole of the top (tail feathers above the exhausts) and mounted at the front (where the turret would normally go) the Imperial Eagle's head from the Shrine of Aquila kit. Usual twin weapon turret to be split, 1 either side of eagles head. Parts bought - just waiting to be built.

Other things I wish to do:

Make my own large exhausts (similar to Mk 2 Forgeworld Land Raider). I have bought a few different size hole punches but any idea of how to punch out holes so precisely on a tube would be gratefully received.

Continue to make "death" and "Imperial" themed tank treads. I wish to have an Imperial Eagle on each tread. I bought the small brass etch imperial eagles from Forgeworld to find ironically they were to small! I now need to buy the medium size version instead (unless anybody has a couple spare I could have/purchase -PM if you wish to discuss)

If anybody can direct me to any websites that actually sell plastic tubing for use in modelling/train building I would be grateful. I have searched but have been unable to find any site that sells 1 of each length of multiple thickness of tube ranging from 1mm to 10mm at a reasonable price. Some sites are charging £4.00 for multiple brass tubes of same diameter. I need plastic as this is far easier to use in conversions.

Any critique would be appreciated. Regards, Brother Morgan.

  • 3 weeks later...

Youngest son unwell today, so I have an extra day off work today to look after him. As he has fallen asleep, here's another update:

Land Raider 1: Here are shots of the first Thunderfire Sponson.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000524.jpg

Once I get a new supply of rivets. I will add these around the edges to make the sponson look a bit more realistic. I plan on adding flames surrounding the large skull at the back which is covering the rear hatch.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000528.jpg

The sponson is meant to look like a FW MK2 Land Raider Sponson. It's made primarily from plasticard with millipt to smooth out any gaps. I've tried to make a template so If I need to, I could easily replicate it. Unfortunately, great plans don't always succeed. Due to various changes in the design/construction phase, I forgot to draw around the pieces to make templates of all the parts! Oh well, best get the ruler out and start measuring the first sponson!

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000525.jpg

The Thunder Fire does work. The only thing from preventing me from making the second sponson is finding an internet site that sells 3mm plastic tubing. The only hobby store I know sells it is in Cardiff and with diesel the price it is, I can't justify a 70 mile round trip to get one piece of plastic tubing! Any sites my fellow B & C members could recommend would be appreciated.

Land Raider 2: Still in "design" stage. Attempted to cut plastic plumbing tube and gave up as my hobby razorsaw was making a hell of a mess. I'll need to cut it with my jigsaw, but can't face the mess in moving all my tools to get to it. This Land Raider will be put on a back burner for the short term.

Land Raider 3: Here are a few shots of my converted "Honoured Imperium" Space Marine statue.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000521.jpg

Holding a shield didn't fit into what I wanted, so out came the razor saw and after a lot of sculpting, here are the results. I made a silicon putty mould of his left hand and with a slight alteration, made a right hand. I felt holding on to the sword with both hands looked better visually. It still needs a small amount of work on the right hand little finger and thumb. I also need to add a few rivets around the sculpted shoulder pad (which I intend to take from the bottom of both legs). I have made use of my FW Brass Imperial Eagles (the ones I bought to make tank treads to find they were too small to fit). You can see the skull and flames on his right shoulder pad. I'm undecided on what to have on his left. Any suggestions?

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000520.jpg

Here's a picture taken from further back. I want to add flames coming up his left leg. I am also thinking of sculpting a leg bone onto the right and adding a skeleton foot bone onto his right foot. I need to add rivets also to the top of his right leg. I'm also toying with him lying on a bed of skulls. What do you think? Bed of skulls or more like a broken flagstone a la a crypt?

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000522.jpg

Here's a close up of how I feel my Heroe's boot treads would look like! I need to even both treads out as his left foot is slighty bigger than his right and I would prefer if they were a mirror image. FW Brass Small Imperial Eagles to the rescue!!

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1000523.jpg

A side shot showing all the sculpting needed to fill in where the shield use to be. His right side isn't perfect, but with my sculpting limitations, I am (almost) happy with it!

The next stage is to construct a Land Raider wide enough to fit this statue and then to work out the mechanics of fitting a vulcan mega bolter front facing, fixed underneath the statue. This Land Raider will not have a transport capacity, taken up by the weight of the statue and all the ammunition to feed 3 (!) vulcan mega bolters. I need to beef up the sides of the Land Raider to allow 30mm tank treads (bought from Blood and Skulls Industry) to be fitted all the way around the model. This will be the most time consuming part of this build. I'll hopefully start this task tonight.

Land Raider 4: Parts from America finally arrived this morning (taken over 2 weeks to get here) . Didn't realise how big the Shrine of Aquila eagle is. I'll need to do a bit of cutting and making the Land Raider wide enough to fit the new top plate. I think this model will turn out great. I must finish Land Raider 3 before starting Land Raider 4!!

Till next time, adieu!

I have one question...how did you make the various pred turrets...ie the lascannon/plasmagun and the twin linked plasma gun variants...what turret base did you use and the coweling...

I love this stuff...makes me drool like an imbecile at a banquet table....hehehehehe

Wolfpack, they were both quite simple conversions. Both used the twin lascannon mantle. For the twin plasma cannon, I chopped both lascannons off and swopped them with 2 old IG Demolisher metal plasma cannons. I used milliput then to fill in the space where the previous 2 lascannon barrels were and once smoothed over, the mantle looked like the one from the Baal predator.

The second lascannon/plasmas gun variant was completed by again chopping off both lascannon barrels and then sticking one of the lascannon barrels back in the middle and 2 metal SM plasma guns either side. Again, a little milliput smoothed out over the top created another Baal mantle.

Hope this helps. I did these many moons ago and they are currently boxed up in a cupboard upstairs and haven't seen the light of day for years - at least I painted those ones!

Regards, Brother Morgan

askin as I may use that conversion for the Razorback missing turret that GW discontinued and FW wants a small fortune for...am lovin the many turret conversions you have...ever thought of maybe writing up some pred conversion STCs for the apoc forum? would definitley look sweet with pics:)

Small amount of progress made in 10 days on Land Raider "Honoured Imperium".

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110130_28.jpg

I have modified the sides of the Land Raider to have extra wide tracks all the way around.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110130_27.jpg

The Honoured Imperium statue is currently temporaily resting on the tracks. My next job tonight is to build the central chassis out of plasticard, ensuring to incorporate the Vulcan Mega Bolter at the front underneath the statue/sarcophagus. The hardest part will be to build the converted engine and exhausts. I have the curved 90degree bends built and I plan on incorporating my usual Adeptus Mechanicus symbol across the engine. I still need to work out how to do the exhausts (I want to make them with lots of holes throughout, similar to a FW MK 2 land raider). Has anyone tried doing this before? Any help would be appreciated.

Quick update on the Honoured Imperium statue Land Raider:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110206_18.jpg

I plan on making plasticard flames to go over the front glacis plate to match the flames on the side armour.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110206_20.jpg

Just need to attach the side extra armour. I think I will also go for a Vulcan Mega Bolter in the side sponsons. 3 Vulcan Mega Bolters - How many shots per turn?

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110206_16.jpg

Small extras added: Rivets to right hand shoulder pad and top of right leg. Flames added to bottom of left leg. Leg bone and "skeletal" foot added to right leg/foot.

To be completed: Small amount of milliput to be added to little finger of right hand. Crux Terminator symbol for left hand shoulder pad. Small amount of ribbing on top of right foot to smooth transition from skeletal foot to leg bone.

Comments appreciated.

Finally got my Honoured Imperium Land Raider 99% finished. What do you think?

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110310_52.jpg

Need to finish adding exhaust pipes at bottom of the engine to complete this project.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110310_51.jpg

I rememeber the first time I ran across this thread. I glanced at the first post and read:

my plan is to have as many weapon combinations as possible on my Land Raiders.

I can still remember thinking "Okay. 2 Sponsons with T.linked Lascannons, 2 sponsons with hurrican bolters, 2 sponsons with inferno Cannons. A twin linked heavy bolter turret, an assault cannon turret. Don't glue on the top hatches and you can swap around the Multimelta, and storm bolters no prob. But this has been done before, so what the deal?"

Then I saw this: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/IMG_2985.jpg

And I was like "Okay, that's different, Play it as a terminus pattern Raider. Nice take on it. Nice conversion work."

And then I saw this one:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/IMG_2986.jpg

At first I thought it was meant to be a promethius, 'cept I noticed the Twin linked heavy bolter turret. I was going to post and say the Promethus was wrong because of that.

But then I happened to see this:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/IMG_2987.jpg

And I said "Okay, that's new."

It wasn't until I saw this one:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/IMG_2989.jpg

That I realized exactly what you meant when you said "as many weapon combinations as possible" And also, I felt a little sorry for Horde armies with that monster grinning at them.

I must say.... Impressive. Most impressive.

Thanks for your comments guys!

Tathion: In answer to your question, no I don't have a group shot as of yet. Due to minimum room and 2 young boys, I have not had the chance to get them all out as of yet. When they get a bit older, I will hopefully pick back up a brush and do the conversions some justice.

A small update:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110313_1Imperialeagletracks.jpg

Here's another track conversion. These will will be wrapped around the whole of land raider a la WW1 tank (like the previous Honoured Imperium conversion).

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110313_1skulltracks.jpg

Here's another track conversion. These Skulls tracks have been made from multiple skulls, moulded in silicon putty and then again, multiple copies being made. These will sit in exactly the same place as the normal tank tracks would fit.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/Eagleforward1.jpg

Here's the next Land Raider conversion. The Shrine of Aquila has been cut down to fit the Land Raider. I plan on attaching the eagle's head almost like a battering ram in the front which would pivot upwards to disgorge it's marines. I am unsure as to where to attach the front gun turret.

Option 1: Attach single weapons either side of eagle's head

Option 2: Use the raised area at the back of the eagle and have the front turret attached high up on the back of the tank.

I am steering towards Option 2. What do my fellow B & C contributors think?

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/Eagleforward2.jpg

Here's a side view. The Shrine of Aquila model fits perfectly on the Land Raider. The raised bit at the back can be seen clearer in this picture to attach the front turret.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/Eagleforward4.jpg

A shot of the eagles head. This will be attached quite high up on the front. I'm still working out the angles and mechanics of how to build the front armour to attach the head. I think I will use the skull tracks on this model.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/Eaglebackward1.jpg

A shot of the Imperial Eagle turned around. I don't like it myself, but in the future, I think I will make an attempt similar to this from lots of different layers of plasticard.

Brother Morgan.

Bit more progress on the Shrine of Aquila Land Raider:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110319_10.jpg

This shows a top view of the work in progress. The skull tracks have been completed. I have attached a cupola to allow the usual turrets to fit.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110319_9.jpg

A more frontal shot here. You can see my attempts at bulking up the neck of the eagle to attach to the front. I plan on building up 3D flames all around the bottom of the Eagle's head and to continue the flame motiff all around the extra armour on the sides of the Land Raider.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110319_12.jpg

Here's a mocked up version. The head will obviously be attached when I get round to sculpting the rest of the neck. Critiques welcome.

Regards, Brother Morgan.
