Beautiful ideas, nice looking army, and cool excuse to use fantasy units in an army! I love it.

Thanks, since I don't really play WFB anymore that viewpoint means I at least some semblance of it left in my games, heh.

I don't comment all that often in the PC+A (fluff is certainly more my thing), but this army really looks very attractive indeed. I very much like a great deal of your ideas.

Thank you Commissar Molotov, it's very gratifying to hear someone valuing conversions or fluff.

Also, due to the excellent new release of the Space Marine painter, here's a rendition of a Raptor Sergeant, since I rather like Raptors.

Remember what happens to capes in Incredibles...:P Becareful of those dresses... And yes, painter wise, the harness can go over the dress.

True, but I figure if a marine gets sucked into a jet turbine he'd punch his way free, invade the aircraft and kill all the crew. I generally don't use torsos with the jump harness as I prefer the appearance of full robes. As to why the first squad all wear dark blue robes, it's because dark blue goes very well with black in terms of night time camouflage, as pure black can show up when there is faint illumination, as a 'darker' shadow. It's actually practical, unless the colour is, say, bone over green.

Some updates and a load of random stuff in general for this post, since I managed more progress.

Firstly, here's my 'stuff' desk, with projects, some bits and so forth, adorning it. It looks hectic, but I know where everything is on it. The metal pile on the left of the desk is around 50 metal marines, heh.

Next up is a Lord I made under the old codex, with Daemonic Speed represented by a xenos mount. It was pretty fun, and he was the first one of my current colour scheme, though if I were to include him now he'd need blue robes and one white arm. No doubt I'll get it done eventually.

Here's an old, old terminator I had lying around, which will eventually lead my 33 various Terminators, through sheer 'awesome' factor. Gotta say, it's my favourite Terminator armour.

--------------------

And now, on to actual updates as promised in my call!

I managed to get another 2 marines finished today, the Sergeant and 'Apothecary' (Icon Bearer) for my first Raptor unit. I really detest painting white.

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/7001/apothsq3lo0.jpghttp://img146.imageshack.us/img146/8554/apothsq4lz9.jpg

What I'm most pleased with however, is the Dreadnought. It's not in the call per se, but meh. I brightened up the HAL lens and finished the white on the arm.

I'm vaguely surprised I've managed to post more than 1 update a month...

Very nice work. I'm glad you've stuck with painting the white, because the scheme looks great.

Cheers! It's good to know the scheme is liked, since it's be a royal pain painting white on black if no one liked it, heh.

Since I had some spare time this evening, what with a previous 4 hour gap in the day which helped with finishing off uni work, I decided to get a bit more done. This was greatly aided by finding 4 'new' pots of Ghostly Gray, a discontinued paint, in a local hobby store. How convenient, since it makes painting white a lot easier. It's practically like a foundation paint and gives really even coverage. At any rate, I got 2 more Raptiors entirely finished with the white, and completed the helmets on another 5.

Alas, there's no further work on the Dreadnought, but I did get round to ordering 4 0.05 Sigma Micron pens to help with neatening the black lining on the white. Huzzah for when they arrive, since it'll speed up the process immensely as I won't have to carefully correct any mistakes with a brush...

I love your chapter it is how i invisage the fallen to be without all the excessive horns and stuff.

Thanks. That's fairly amusing too, considering the Dark Angel trophies I'll have on a few of them thanks to a winning streak against a friend.

So, I've finally started work on the first of two Daemon Princes. I know my original pledge is warping beyond recognition, but I figure as long as I finish 3k's worth of stuff everything is fine.

To get to this stage took several hours of sawing, clipping and swearing. Basically, I hated how stooped the current Daemon Prince is, and wanted a standing one. The torso will have the gap filled as Mk IV armour, so essentially a tab running down from the breastplate, and the head will be imperiously looking to one side, and will be similar to the helmet worn by the Warhammer Lord of Slaanesh on Steed. Currently, I have no real clue about its' left arm, but the right one will still have the sword, just in a relaxed grip pointing down and slightly off to the side. I'll be attaching the torso properly in an hour or so, then starting all the sculpting work which doesn't need the arms.

Thanks! If I've inspired you to paint, that's great. I got the pens here: The Art of Craft Ltd. Average price, but it took a while to find a UK seller. If you're in the US I reckon you'd have an easier time.

I've also made a lot of progress on the Slaanesh Daemon Prince. All I need to do is finish the head, the modified breastplate and, of course, work out what the hell to do for the remaining arm. Here it is:

what about sculpting some 'warp' onto that thing? I absolutely love the pose, but it looks kinda like you just threw in some GS to fill the gaps.

PLEASE, for the love of chaos... add some mutation :)

Thanks on the pose. I can understand the concern over the lack of visible mutation, aside from the armour that blends into the flesh, the large pair of wings and the nifty height, but by the time it's finished no doubt it'll have more detail.

So, I managed to finish another 5 Raptors a few days ago. At the time I thought it was 6, till I went to take pictures. Go figure I missed a helmet, so that one wasn't included. I also managed to get the Daemon Prince's head started, and it's nearly finished as I just need to build up the crest a bit more so it looks slightly irregular. All in all, not to bad I reckon, as it took me since December to finish 7 Raptors, and on Tuesday I finished another 5, so that's nifty. Oh, and I still, still hate painting white.

The Daemon Prince so far:

I took a bit more care with these pictures, bothering with uniform picture height and white balance, so hopefully they show everything clearly.

  • 2 weeks later...
that looks really, really awesome.

one question: how does he see? (being slaaneshy and all he doesn't REALLY have to, but it be nice to know)

Thank you. As for sight, it's another ironic aspect I wanted to incorporate. As his senses are heightened by his corruption, so too are they restricted by his 'development'. In this case, his armour has melded to his skin and enclosed him, yet allows no real feeling, sight, smell and so forth. His main interaction comes from his psyker skills.

Anyway, recently I've spent around 4 hours finishing the metal of 54 (yes, that's 54) marines, as well as 2 of the 3 bone stages and any exposed flesh. Just another 40-ish minutes to finish up all the bone, then it's on to minor details and bases. Not too bad, but since I've not spent much time painting or converting lately I unfortunately can't provide any more pictures of 'finished' marines.

So, why the inverted commas around finished? Well I've been wanting to get some more colour into this force, and the following scheme change occurred to me. What do you all think, should I keep the dark drybrushed gray with moderately badly painted blue robes, or should I go for this, which won't be drybrushed and yes, will take a lot of time but which I reckon will be worth it:

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/1295/version2uo5.pnghttp://img329.imageshack.us/img329/4346/version2robediu2.png

Honest opinions please, as I'm not sure which scheme to continue with. To prevent this update being completely devoid of figures, here's a looted Dark Angel helmet one of my marines wears to commemorate a 15-match winning streak against a Dark Angels opponent:

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/87/darkangelzm8.jpg

Till next time then.

Edit: Hah, also just realized the possible new scheme is much closer to that of the Death Shadows, the guys this army was originally based upon.

I say stick with the black and blue robes.

That echoes what most people at my local GW said, so I guess I'll stay gray. Shame about the general lack of feedback here on the possible scheme change though. In the past few days I've managed to get the 6 Sergeants for the marine squads up to the level of the other marines, i.e. gray armour, metal, bone and bases done, sans snow. No pictures of them, as they're not finished yet.

I did however spend an entire night finishing the sculpting on the first Daemon Prince, and yesterday managed to get the wings and helmet crest pretty much done. I also finished the Plague Marine Rhino, dirtying up the snow, and painted 10 Plague Marines to completion. Huzzah! On to the pictures.

http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/636/prin2wq2.jpg

Unfortunately the detail of the lash arm isn't overly clear due to the current paint layer, but there are 6 inlaid eyes, to waylay any other questions about how he sees, heh. The helmet and lilac arm will of course be highlighted up to almost pure white to match the rest of the army. With any luck I'll be able to get a rich deep purple for the rest of the armour. I also have another 33 metal Plague Marines to put together.... joy.

I've started on the second Daemon Prince, with the basic base laid out, legs in place and the beginning of the robes being filled in, but it'll probably be a while till I get any real progress done on it. As to my local GW's 'at least 3 colours and based to use models in the store' policy, to be implemented at the end of the month, I only have the second Daemon Prince and 6 Obliterators to get done to a basic standard, so at least I've made a lot of headway on that. I'm finishing up my plans on how to convert the Obliterators, so that's not too bad either.

Till next time then.

Edit: Typo.

The DP is beautiful, and I absolutely love the way you've integrated your scheme into the plague marines, nice one there. I know your into the painting phase already, but for the DP you might want to think about a loincloth of sorts(i think it would help because right now my eye is just drawn to the humongous empty space between his legs. the paint looks superb though, and one question. will you use a white fist for example on the DP (that would be real cool) and will you skip out on some of the pink for black instead (like GW noise marines?) Keep up the jaw-dropping work. :P

Nice progress, Xanthier! I love the subtle conversions, the plague marines look great, and the Slannesh Daemon Prince, is completely awesome. The 'cyclops' plague marine has got to be, by far, my favorite of the bunch. I'm looking forward to more from you, so keep up the updates. :P

Thank you Asmodeus' Swordhand for the feedback. I can easily see what you mean about the gap between the legs, but until I figure out something good to place there, I'll maintain it was a ploy to get people to look around a Slaanesh Prince's 'abdominal region'. The whole of the left arm and head will indeed be nearly white, and the flesh will also be fairly pale, to match the army scheme. The armour itself will be a deep purple, so it'll match the dark areas of the usual scheme without resorting to black. I have enough near-black already with all the gray, heh.

I also find the old Rogue Trader-era cyclops to be my current favourite, mostly due to the pilot nurgling. Thanks for the encouragement.

Time for another update. I certainly seem to be posting these more often than once a month, how nifty.

Though I've progressed no further on the Daemon Prince, I did spend all of last night converting the 10 Battle for Macragge Space Marines in to Chaos counterparts for my girlfriend, as well as trimming mold lines off of, and assembling, another 7 regular Chaos Marines for her. Not only that, but I assembled 15 Plague Marines and applied sand to the bases of the entire lot. Needless to say, no sleep for me last night. During the day I got some black spray and basecoated all the figures, then handed the 17 marines to my girlfriend who was, thankfully, very happy with them. As she's starting a Chaos Marine army I figured I'd help her along, stripping the paint off a load of old figures for her and what not. I still have to strip and re-assemble 3 Chaos Bikes, 5 Daemonettes on Steeds, an Archaon conversion to become a Sorceror and 6 Raptors. I'll no doubt take a picture of any conversions of note to include here.

Though I didn't make any progress on the Daemon Prince, I did manage to paint to completion 14 of the 15 Plague Marines, hindered only by the drying times of whole-figure washes, and forgetting to base 1 of the 15. Bleh. I also unfortunately washed them too dark, which required another couple of drybrushes and stippling, then yet another wash, to correct. At any rate, here they are:

http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/7226/deathg1fk1.jpg

http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/1083/deathg2uz1.jpg

http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/7608/deathg3ex3.jpg

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/1267/deathg4ht5.jpghttp://img209.imageshack.us/img209/4654/oblit1vl9.jpg

As you may have noticed, I clipped a lot of annoying mutation detail off of an Obliterator and stuck a Plasma Cannon on, considering this is the weapon I tend to use the most. I think it fits very well, and with a bit of greenstuff to hide gaps and what not, hopefully it'll look rather nice. However, for the 5 Obliterators I currently use in my list, I decided to go with a slightly more 'retro' feel, extending the potential fluff for the 'Strelbans' (Obliterators) and why the remaining Techmarines don't enter battle:

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/9463/titansuy8.jpg

Indeed, they don't enter battle as, through scavenging and tinkering, they send almost entirely armour-encased servitors in to battle in their stead. These will act as the Strelbans until I find similar figures that are slightly larger, as these are around similar proportions to a regular 40k figure on 25mm base. Any suggestions as to similar but larger GW figures?

That's all for now, till next time.

Great work Xanthier....

Love the Daemon Prince - he absolutely Rocks. Quick question for you - are those the Hippogriff wings you used? I tried using pegasus wings on mine, and they come off looking just a little small.

Looking forward to seeing more progress.

Cheers

Cheers Widowmaker. They are indeed Hippogriff wings, though the figure itself is quite old and not in the current range, so I'm not overly sure as to what would currently share such wings.

As a general verbal update, no further progress on my own army, but I've managed to assemble, clean up, sand bases on and basecoat the following: 3 Chaos Bikes, 5 mounted Daemonettes, the Chaos Lord/Sorceror based on Archaon, 2 Marines with plasma guns and 6 Raptors with custom bases. I've also managed to clean up etc etc 12 Daemonettes, which just need to be basecoated. I'll be painting a Daemonette to demonstrate a possible colour scheme my girlfriend can use, as well as painting her Chaos Lord/Sorceror, so those'll turn up here in a few days time no doubt.
