Till
Just a few pics of the chaplain I have been workin on. Lookin for comments; the good, bad, and ugly. Mac Gal
Well, termie chaplain is IMO one of best looking 40k models of all time, and your painting does him justice. Nice work! SpudWhitman
Very tidy, very consistent painting across that whole force. It's nice to know you plan on adding models to it. sugar-free
that chap is sweet and the marines look great. your going to have alot of fun on the table when you finish that army. congrats Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/133215-black-templar-army-in-the-works/#findComment-1536186 Share on other sites
Till
Thanks a bunch for the replies! =) I put about 4 hours into my next 10 man squad. Got em washed/scrubbed, guns drilled, and what not. I was noticing the upgrade sprues are terrible quality. Is this how all new GW stuff is? The bulk of my models were made in 99, and I don't think the upgrades existed then. Maybe they took a quality cut? The biggest things I noticed was the color of the plastic, and the molds don't match up very well at all. The plastic is a little darker, maybe even with a tint of blue to it. Anyone else notice this? A good friend who is doing the same thing I am with Dark Angels and he's complaining of the same thing. Anyone else having the molds not lining up issue? Also, I sprayed my guys while it was raining =(. Was a bad spray job but nothing terrible enough to keep them from looking ok when they're done. Wish me luck! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/133215-black-templar-army-in-the-works/#findComment-1536218 Share on other sites
Hasoroth
Im not sure Till. I like the plastics when they are darker though (but thats after I wash 'em). If you mean you're getting a lot of bad molds and flash on your plastic spruces, I picked up a Space Wolf set in my shop which has been there since '99 and a Tac squad that just came in a day before, and they both had horrendous amounts of flash, whereas the recently shipped in Assault Squad box was fine. For what its worth, my BT plastics that came with the army box I ordered were fine and matched perfectly. Gareque
Hey there bud . I thought it looked good on CMoN and I still think it looks good now :D As for your photography, well, the only problematic ones are the ones of the eagle shoulder/storm bolter side and the back one both have a little too much glare. If needs be, when taking the photo try taking 2-3 diff photos using just a flash, natural light and fake light and see how it comes out ;) As for the paint job, very nice overall look, although my favourite is the parchment at his waist. Looks v well done. G Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/133215-black-templar-army-in-the-works/#findComment-1542212 Share on other sites
Till
The current squad is taking me a bit to get threw. /sigh. I made the MASSIVE misstake of doing 10 at a time. All thats left are: Bolters, which will be done in all black, with highlights going black/codex, codex, fortress. Chains going boltgun, black ink, chain. BT logos in white with no highlights (imo makes it look like ivory when hit with matte). The 1999 shoulder bitz with top 2/3 of BT logo which will be painted in same way bolter is, with mini banner painted as troop parchment (beastial, bleached, bleached/white with black/black ink script.) I differinate troop paper from hq paper the paper on hq has about 10 more colors ><. and, well... I want to get the army done this year so some corners need to be cut. New upgrade sprew shoulders that will be like the other shoulders other than the middle skull will be made of gold. (Tin, brazen, shining, shining/mithral) Parchment on legs, which is quick. Think thats about it. Oh, and bases.... dirt (scorched, beastial, bleached), matte model, then grass. Then lastly black ring em. Should be done.... some time around tues/wed. I just get burn out while working on new armies. Im a player... I like playing the game. To be honest I dont care for painting at all. But to where I dont care for painting, I -HATE- spending the $$$ on these models then paiting them up like crap. /sigh... Im looking forward to something other than doods... Think the next model I knock out is a rhino. I've got a high end duel action air brush I've been wanting to try out, but no compressor ><. have a lot of cool ideas for icons on the tanks, but need to drop the $100 on the compressor first. Also, I baughttoo much <DELETED BY THE INQUISITION> all at the start. I have amost 2k points worth of NIB crap including 2 land raiders, a crusader, 2 rhinos, razorback, 10 assault terminators (all with forgeworld shoulders and shields that have yet to come in the mail), several bikes w/ attack bikes... bla bla bla... For a person who doesnt liek to paint, its a bit daunting. lol. Wish me luck, I'll keep this thread updated as I finish things. Thanks a bunch for the support; you all keep me from playing models with 3 colors on them. =p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/133215-black-templar-army-in-the-works/#findComment-1542287 Share on other sites
Till
So the bad spray job hurt the bitz pack shoulders some (plants), but mainly that was it. Also htis squad took a little bit longer than I thought it would to get done. doing 10 at a time was a nightmare; wasn't very motivating. Anyway, here are the pics: http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2002.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2003.jpg Army shot... still tiny http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2004.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2006.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2005.jpg Lookin for some C&C, always. Any suggestions on what the next squad should have different? Im using subtle differences between squads to tell them apart. First squad had silver guns, second had black. Next may have red? Next thing to be done next is a rhino or an attack bike. Widowmaker
Nice work Till. Knowing how difficult it is to get Templars looking even close to good, these are very well done. Nice and crisp, and I like the use of the spot colours on the seals. I also think the use of old and new BT bitz works really well. Something to set them apart? Maybe litanies on the armour? Perhaps back banners that you paint in varying colour schemes? Looking good though - can't wait to see more of them. Fat_Lad
Nice work mate, nice work indeed. I would suggest doing the next squad with colt pistols and close combat weapons as opposed to bolters to add variety. -T- Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/133215-black-templar-army-in-the-works/#findComment-1548287 Share on other sites
Till
Its been a little bit since I have posted, Been really busy ><. I have decided to not play by BT rules as I love their colors and icons, but Im not ready for a CC excluse list just yet, I played Korne for too long. So, these are now my very-dark-but-not-quite-black templars. Things I have got knocked out since I have posted would be 1 razor back, and two plasma cannon doods. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2003-1.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2002-1.jpg I was checking out Coolminiornot and saw a BT land raider using the IG transfer and thought it looked great, so I figured I would give it a shot. I thought it looked like crap as you could see the clear part of the transfer. I thought the matt varnish would take care of this but instead it just made it foggy! Oh well... to be honest I think it still looks ok. Im really wanting suggestions on how to improve the vehicle. This was really kinda practice for a few land raiders I'll be doing for apoc. Do the lines need to me smoother? Maybe not as bright highlights? I like the over all look, its busy... but not too much junk on it. I dont want any crazy free hand, as these are machines of war, not show cars. I also don't care for the white in between the recessed areas (if you all know what I mean). I like it black black ... Also, don't want any mud on the bottom, I play on mostly city fight, and mud washes off. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2004-1.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/whpics2005-1.jpg This brings us to the doods. What do you all think of the gun? I wanted to try something different. Many people I talk to at the comic shop (where I play) say they like it. however, everyone always like everything in front of you, and if there is one place to get peoples true opinions its the interweb. So.... yay or nay? (and why) I have no idea why the bottom pictures are yellowish... I still suck with cameras. SpudWhitman
I like the highlighting on your Razorback, it is consistent with what you've done on your troops, and this guarantees the force will look cohesive on the tabletop. The decal carrier turning foggy on you isn't all that bad in this instance. At least from the photos shown I can tell myself your Techmarine had his servitors paint a signage spot on the vehicles in the motor pool so that the placement of the numbering is consistent. Truthfully, I find the effect you've painted on the plasmacannon coils to be very innovative. medusa_ritchie
Till - The highlighting on the razorback looks good and like Spud said it matches the look of squads so gives a nice uniform look. With the plasma i would have done the colours the other way around so that the brightest highlights were on the edges and the darkest colour was in the 'core', but other than that i think they look good. Brother Eleysium
I really like what you have so far. I especially like the work you have done on the Razorback. The red shoulder pads on the Storm Bolter Gunner really make him stand out and adds an edge to the model. The Plasma Cannons you have painted look pretty damn good too. To be honest I don't think I have ever seen anyone paint all of the wires on the Cannons like that in a different color. If you don't mind I might have to steal that one and use it for myself. Keep up the good work, and make sure you keep up the updates. I look forward to seing this army continue to grow over time. There was a whole thread somewhere about the quality of the upgrade boxes, not sure where it was though. My vehicle sprews were fine. I got two or three upgrade kits, both were the same in what was wrong/right. Im working on the 2nd razorback currently. All things considrered, the crappiness of the upgrade sprews isnt really that big of a deal, Im not paiting the base doods in a good enough way to really gripe about the models not being perfect. If I were spending 20 hours a guy, I would be pissed, but such isnt the case =p. I really like what you have so far. I especially like the work you have done on the Razorback. I cant take credit for much as far as being creative goes. I saw the idea on some minis on coolminiornot. Im about as creative as a door stopper. =/ I havnt seen the green - white plasma cell thing done before (tho Im sure Im not the first to do it), so I may have gotten lucky. Till
HQ on a bike. I think Im rushing... This guy didnt come out very well imo. Im wanting to PLAY... god painting sucks ><. Looking for comments on the axe please =p. Its out there, not sure if its a good idea yet or not. This is actually the first time I have painted/put together a bike. The pose was harder to put together than I thought it would be.
