brass etching from forge world

Recommended Posts

Brass-etched details are popular after market items in the wider modeling world of tanks, planes and ships. I've never heard of them being used for making molds. They just get glued onto a model to add details that are often too small to be represented well in plastic.

on the forgeworld website there is examples of what you can do with them

i bought some of the renagade brass etch bits to use in my chaos army as icons

i cut them off the sprue, glue them to some platicard and then cut the plasticard around them

creating an easy icon

for my magos i glued a brass etch cog onto his back and stuck it in the middle of the icon

i have a picture of it in my photobucket

here

for my prince i stuck a chaos icon onto his right shoulder pad

and i have a picture of this one too

Making a press mould from a brass etched piece would be problematic. The brass is really really thin. The resultant press moulded piece would be too thin to use. The brass these sheets are made of is so thin I have lacerated my hand badly enough for stitches by mishandling it. That said, I wish FW would make a sheet for my Word Bearers.

I just picked up a sheet of the Blood Angels etched brass because I was feeling saucy at Games Day... Does anyone have any tips/adive/exaples of these things painted? I have seen lots of them just stuck to a model after painting but am curious about how they come out being painted... Gracias!

I recently purchased the Black Templar brass etchings and put them to use on my most recent vehicles. Some things, like very fine lettering, can be a real pain to paint, but for the most part they paint just as easy as anything else. The one bit of advice I have is to be very, very careful when you glue them on: superglue will stick those things down tight the instant they touch, so you only get a second or two to adjust the angles before it becomes impossible/unlikely that the piece can be removed and reglued without permanently messing it up.

Examples of their use can be found on the landraider and rhino in this blog (too lazy to repost just now): http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...6588&st=100

Do what I do and cheat - use PVA glue to set the brass where you want it (plenty of time to work it around before it sets and easily removed too if necessary) then apply CA/superglue using a needle, pin or similar around the edge of the brass to lock it down permanently, works a treat.

As for what painted EB looks like, well, it looks like raised detail basically. If you bend it to the bend to get a nice 'flat' fit it looks like it was always there:

Knee & shoulder insignia are brass, as is the small Aquila on the side of the launcher. EB is brilliant for the freehand or GS challenged, I've used Forge World Stuff and some from Secret Miniatures too - they do some great Roman & Arabic numerals that are perfect for squad/company markings, plus they've got some lovely runes/Celtic knotwork that's spot on for Space Wolves...
