Greenstuff Moulds

hi everyone i would like to share my attempt at moulding various icons and stuff from GS.

my moulds are simple press moulds in Super Sculpey, which you bake in the oven and it hardens and seem good for casting though ive had a small amount of shrinkage on the first mould.

to combat this il try cooking at a lower temp or reinforcing the moulds to see if the shrinkage stops.

any how here are the pics of the first mould:

Those look much better than I would have guessed. I am curious about two things however. First when you placed the bitz into the sculpey did you leave it for a while to harden a bit before baking, if so any idea how long? Second what did you use for a release agent when you placed the green stuff into the mold. This could be helpful since I had planned on scuplting a few bits like chapter icons but didnt want to resculpt them constantly but if I could make a couple of variations then just mass produce them that would be ace.

i used some oil as a release agent lightly brushed on( i plan on washing the casts in soapy water before i paint them, and i literally pressed them in and stuck it in the oven.

the super sculpey is very soft and squishy out of the pack.

i stuck bits of rod to the backs of the parts so i could pull them out again, and once the GS has started to go off you can pop the casts out real easy.

my plans are the same as your i need loads of Space wolf icons and stuff but its so hard to get hold of the extras sprues i decided to make my own lol.

I believe green stuff can take the vulcanizing process cant it? So that would mean it could take a resin filler too. The question becomes can Super Sculpty do it? (And if not then you can use Green STuff in its place)

I've been experimenting with Green stuff molds at the moment (Made of Green Stuff) and so far results have been very good. The funniest part was it was the idea of my Local GW manager to do them.

how do you get the hole in the shoulder pad where the arm goes.

and it would be good to get some pics of them on mins

the hole wasnt intentional i ran out of gs so i stuck the end of my brush in the mould to fill up the space, i suppose you cold use a marine arm coated in oil to make the inside of the pad

"I'd like to want to see these on a marine just to look at the shrinkage your talking about, cause they are looking amazingly good."

il rustle up a close up of the original pad and the moulded one for ya

it should take resin its very hard once baked only the release agent may have to be different ive been using cooking oil from the kitchen so i can wash the cast in washing up liquid when i need them

heres the best pic i could do of the shrinkage:

nicely done.

haven't tried scuply to make molds before but have used greenstuff - looks like i may have to give it a go. not sure i like the look of the shrinkage so much. for for more pure detail bits it looks like ti could be great.

have you tried to just make a mold of the icon from the shoulder pad rather than the whole pad? could resolve any issues you have with the whole pad being slightly smaller as you'll just have the emblem moulded to stick on standard pads.

its not really clear on the picture of the mould but around the edge are 5 wolf skulls from a banner top im hoping i can use them to put on legs or weapons etc il try and make a pad with one il cast it today and post the pic when i get back from work tonight(i hope ;))

i just recieved my GW saw in the post so i can start making some marines il post some progress pics in my blog

Sculpey actually shrinks very little; I read somewhere its less than two percent. If its shrinking more than that you might want to look at the temperature your baking at and how long you're using it. Sculpey only requires fifteen minutes for every quarter of an inch.

Man, I am so tempted to try this with my Flesh Tearers.

i will try the next mould on a lower temp to see if it stops the shrinking, as for leaving the pad in there its not a bad idea i may try it.

and i bought the flesh/pinkish colour stuff
