Templar Help

Squat

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, Last time I posted a query I was painting some Dark Angels Command Squad (see my gallery for finished models, please let me know what you think).

I've now moved on and am attempting my first black templar, however I've run into a slight stumbling block.

The Robes!!!!

They've been basecoated in Graveyard Earth, then highlighted in Bleached Bone, then 1X1 of Bleached Bone and Skull White, followed by a very watered down Skull white, however the white still looks.... streaky, not sure if you'll be able to see from the pics, but any advice on those would be helpful.

The other part I really need help on is the red ribbons, on his robe, holster etc.. they were basecoated in Scab Red, washed with Red Ink and have had the edges highlighted with a 1X1 mix of scab red and blood red, however they still look... I dunno, flat to me..... anyone got any idea's as I'm kinda stuck!!

Any Comments or Advice or more than welcomed!

carefully highlight the streaky parts of the robes with the wartered down skull white, BUT don't water it down too much or you'll never get the cover you need.

Personally I love the new inks for robes, they are soo fast to do now...

I paint the whole thing bleached bone, apply devlan mud ink wash and highlight as required.

Ohh andas for the DA's you've done, i see someone else paints the exhaust bulbs on the backpacks boltgun metal! lol

The apothecary, hes looking good, nice work on the liquid vials on the backpack, but you may want to add a watered blue ink (I recommend asurmen blue over blue ink, its easier to control) around the joins and grooves on the helmet and arm, aside from that, they are looking good... I really must get some pics of my DA command posted up....

For robes i use a similar method to MAL using the new GW washes. I paint the whole thing white (i use P3 Morrow White) but Skull white will work, then I wash the cloth with the Gryphonne sepia, not quite as dark as the mud wash. And then highlight the raised folds white again. either will work well for tabletob.

I've uploaded some pics of a few of my DA inlcuding my command squad, my robes are definately not white, but I only use a very fine highlight seeing as I want them to be more off bone than white. Just check out my gallery and let me know what you think.

Thanks for the tips on the robes, appreciate the help, I've tried a bit more and will post update shortly, anyone got any idea's on the red ribbons? or do they look ok?!

Checked your gallery Mal, loved the robes, tell me, how the hell did you paint that flag?!

Ok, so, I've done a bit more, not much, but enough to keep me happy for tonight ( I find I can't do too much as my eyes get tired after a few hours, and I am a slooooww painter)..

I've highlighted the tubing on the helmet, that was basecoated in dark flesh and then highlighted in watered down blood red, wow that comes out bright!!

I've given the shining gold a wash with chestnut ink, gone over the robe again with more watered down skull white, put dark flesh on the templar seal on his belt, oh yer and added his right arm!

He's now slowly starting to look like the head chopping, heretic hunting crusader I want him to be!

Comments and Advice are more than welcome!! (sorry for the crappy pics, I only have the camera on my phone).

Looks like hes ordering a charge to me...

Thanks for the comments on my DA, well if you get a chance to peek at the back fo the DA dex you'll probally reconigise my banner...

Its all hand painted... and took me for freaking ever to do.

Step 1: Paint quarters, do light to dark to make it easier to clear up mistakes, so 2 quarters bleached bone, 1 quarter dark angels green and finally 1 quarter chaos black.

Step 2: Through careful comparision to other like DA banners I have seen I made a stensil of the icon from thin paper (the really flexable stuff, I cant remember what its called) and carefully shaped this onto the banner, using this stencil I got a rough shame of the icon which I cleaned up by eye to the original design, (icon is skull white) I then blacklined this with 1 part chaos black 2 parts black ink.

Step 3: The outside of the banner I painted with 1 part chaos black 1 part codex grey and high lighted with 1 part chaos black 2 parts codex grey and finally a light dry brush of fortress grey over the creases. At this point I used a thinned devlan mud wash on the upper bone quarter and highlighted with 1 part bleached bone, 1 part skull white, and I added a green ink to the green quarter and highlighted with 1 part dark angels green 1 part snot green.

Step 4: finishing touches, I lined the inner banner with red gore and subtly highlighted with 2 parts red gore 1 part blazing orange, banner pole is mithril silver and the gold is dwarf bronze with a chestnut wash and highlighted wityh burnished gold, all thats left after that is the purity seals and the marine!

Heh I expect you may not have wanted a tutorial on how to paint that one... but you did ask ;)

Right, Shoulder Pads are on, fortress grey added to them (watered down, took about 4 coats). Crusader Cross's were patined Dark Flesh, then highlighted with blood red. The pics don't really do it justice (again, taken with my phone) but so far I'm pretty pleased with him!

Not a lot else added apart from the white to shoulder pads, so far so good but needs quite a few more coats before I'll be happy. Pics are a bit better, the light shows up more so hopefully you can see more what it looks like.

I'm also thinking of having my first go at a snow base for this templar, I thought that might look quite good, not sure yet though, I'll have a practice run on a spare base with my bicabonate soda, wood glue and water, never tried it before, so will see how that turns out.

Also, other question regarding his black armour, all my other marines (mainly, well ok, all dark angels) have been varnished with matt varnish (so I don't get the shine etc..) however I'm thinking that it might be worth selectivly varnish his black armour with gloss varnish... has anyone else tried this?!?

Your robes seem pure white to me, but maybe that's the camera.

The way I do my robes is start off with a fairly thick coat of bestial brow, leaving the recesses black. I then add a slightly thinner coat of kommando khaki and then one or two thin coats of bleached bone obviously leaving recesses again. I then do extreme highliting with thin skull white.

Heres a (bad and WIP) pic of a similar model to yours:

http://i34.tinypic.com/2qx0sgk.jpg

I'll get a better pic later.

As for the big crusader seals, as they have no deep recesses I find it hard to do much with them and generally just edge them with blazing orange.

I must admit the robes do look very bright in my pics (due to the camera) however they aren't pure white, it's basically bleached bone with a (hopefully) light highlight of skull white on the raised surfaces, it's tricky to get a pic as good as your eye see's to really show off what they look like.

The crusader seals I think have come out quite well, the dark flesh basecoat really seems to help with depth of the red (watered down blood red over the dark flesh), I'm planning on doing a mix of fiery orange and blood red on the extreme edges as the last highlight to the seals.

I like your figure MmmmmFlamed'Nid must be mine's battle brother or something haha! Would like to see how yours turns out, please keep me posted on that one.

I like the robes as well, seems to have that long campaign look to it (as opposed to mine, looking like he's come out of the dry cleaners, haha!)

MmmmmFlamed'Nid I do like Brother Squat, I like the fact that he looks like he's been through a campaign already, battle hardened!! Keep up the good work and let me know how they go, what you planning on doing for the bases?!

As I mentioned in my previous post I'm going to attempt a snow base for my templar (yulp!!) hopefully won't turn out too shoddy!

Shadow Nugz I didn't actually use any washes, inks etc.. on my robes.

The robes were basecoated in Graveyard earth, then highlighted with watered down bleached bone (about 3 - 4 coats), then highlighted again with 1X1 mix of bleached bone and skull white (about 2 coats), then highlight of watered down (heavily watered down, I discovered that for non streaky white you need to water it down more than you think, takes longer to cover, but the results are worth it, you need patience, something I lack, which is why my shoulder pads are a bit lumpy!! anyway...) skull white which was about 3 coats, but only really light and on the raised edges..

The red ribbons were basecoated in scab red, then washed with red ink straight from the pot, then highlighted with 1X1 mix of scab red and blood red.

The thing I'm most impressed with on my figure so far is the crusader cross on his shoulder, basecoat of dark flesh, then highlight of dark flesh and blood red, then highlight of blood red, then blood red and blazing orange, then finally blazing orange.

will try to post some better pics of it today, doesn't show up well in the pics, but the level of depth to the colour is brilliant (or so I think)

again, any comments or questions (or advice!!) please let me know!

Ok, latest update, added more shining gold to parts of the sword and the exhaust vents (thought it would go well with the colour harmony!) added boltgun metal to the sword and skulls on the robe and axe.

Added mirthil silver to the chains.

Also added a 2X1 mix of shining gold and mirthil silver to the gold parts on the sword, axe and exhaust vents and I think that has come out really well and show's up well in the pics.

Glued the backpack into place.

Cleaned up the shoulder pads with chaos black, tidying up the edges etc..

Any Comments, etc.. welcome!

He's almost done!

Ok, snow base is done, I'm quite pleased with it as it's my first one, and my templar is done!!

For my first Black Templar attempt I'm really pleased with it, I don't think it's too bad, I need more practice with the metallic paints as it's a bit rough, but apart from that it's come out the way I thought it would. (By the way, the writing on his left shoulder is dark red not pink!! it's just the way it looks in the pic! :-) )..

Please leave me your comments as I'm dying to know what people think of it.

And any suggestions on how I can improve in future are welcome too!

Thanks Guys!

And Now, my Heretic Hunter!!

I love how BT look very much. I like this guy too. He reeks of hack and slash duel wielding death. =p

The white on the shoulders looks great, something many people have issues getting. One thing I would do that I feel would make it look better with very little effort is the use of inks. Black inking the boltgun metal with very watered down ink adds real crisp lines between the chain links. I would also highlight his lid. There is a lot of black on there; hard to make out detail like the cross on his cheek. Maybe go up another layer in your black highlighting? May just be my personal pref, I love bright highlights on black. Base looks great too.

Thanks for the comments so far guys, makes it all worthwhile when you can show your painted mini's off to people who appreicate it!

My painting time is improving as well, think that BT only took me about 3 weeks haha!

Till - I did use black ink on the boltgun metal to dull it down a bit and then mirhil silver on the top most edges, maybe it doesn't come out well in the pics?

I used a 1X1 mix of chaos black and codex grey for the first lot of black highlights and then layered over that with pure codex grey, on the helm, I left it at that, as it (to me anyway) picked out the detail, I used fortress grey on selective parts of the black armour as well, I'm tempted to try blue next time as a highlight layer, think that may look cool?

I've also discovered that the matt varnish I've applied to protect it has dulled down the highlights a bit which is why the helm looks a bit barren, maybe I should try to highlight a bit more extreme in future knowing that it will be toned down with the varnish?!!?

Anyway, thanks for the advice, I appreicate it!

This is kind of what I was talking about with a brighter highlight, kind of a visual ref.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/warhammer07-12-0B00111111.jpg

These guys are black, 1:1 codex:black, codex, 5:1 fortress gray:water.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f185/dadickerson/img4883ed21b3319.jpg

My roomate did the blood angel, think they're the same leading up to codex, then think he mixed codex with fort for the final. (his blends are way smoother than mine :P )

As far as using blue goes, Im really not a fan of it at all. One guy under close inspection my look ok, but the army as a whole gets a blue hint to it. Black templar, not black with some blue templar... again... pure personal pref talking here.

I noticed you didnt do the little metal areas in the joints (behind the knee). You ccan get the same effect as the blood angel above with boltgun and non watered down black ink, just make sure you stay in the lines. Fairly easy and quick, really makes the metal back there pop out.

Just trying to give input. I really love your mini in general.
