Blood Raven first try

Recommended Posts

After a bunch of Ultramarines and Orks I thought I was a pretty good painter...

But Blood Ravens are darn hard to get right IMO. The paint just wouldn't stick right, bleached bone being too thick and impossible to dilute & red gore being too thin to stay in one place. I tried though, and eventually got it right. See below for first results (WIP). C&C = very welcome!

Nice work, espically around the exhaust ports...

I'd recommend changing the red ink on the shoulder pads to sepia or mud wash.

As for teh red, if your having a lot of trouble, try a grey undercoat.... I know shock horror its neither black or white... but give it a try on a tester marine, you should find that the red covers much better, then carefully go over and use the old black ink (or watered chaos black) to fill in the gaps in the armour.

Then highlight as you have done.

This should give you a cleaner finish, as well as being faster to paint.

For my Blood Ravens I use a base of Mech red and then build up from there with scab red and red gore. Then use a mix of red gore and a little tanned flesh for highlights (if you can find it, it's discontinued now). Finish up with either sepia wash or baal red wash and you are golden. For the bone Just get a nice solid layer of bleached bone color on there (it takes me 3-4 thinned out coats). Then you can either use diluted devlan mud or sepia for shading.

A few comments;

1) Your exhaust ports have really good weathering effects.

2) you need to get a nice solid coat of red on. Your red is too mottled and thus the weird look to it.

3) Make sure you highlight the black. Don't do extreme highlights either as black base and light grey highlights looks too stark. Do a 50/50 mix of black and codex grey and then finish up with a highlight of grey (unless you are good at blending).

4) This isn't a painting thing.. but personally I think the Melta-bomb looks a little clunky on the lower leg.

That looks good. I literally started painting my first Blood Raven this morning, and have had the same difficulties!

But yours has turned at well, I look forward to seeing more.

Ok, painted the next one, it's again still WIP, but once I get all five done, I will finish the bases and small details I missed. I decided to drybrush layer for layer with red gore this time, instead of just painting straight on. The pics actually don't do it justice, their quality doesn't show the slightly darker color the second marine has:

Still, I am quite happy the way things are going. Your C&C please.

Not bad at all. For mine, I start with a white spray coat, wash of brown or chestnut ink, then start the reds in thin layers. Good coverage, plus if you thin the reds right, your shading is pretty much done already. I also stick to plain white for the pads. Darn good for a first attempt, you'll only get better with time.

  • 2 months later...

Well a little update on things would be nice right about now... it's been some time since I got to post (work and private life got in the way of doing some serious modelling), but I actually finished the entire squad.

Almost. They kind of still need their markings, so still WIP. But the bases are done!

Here we go:

If you really want to stick to a black primer, then use a couple coats of scorched brown as a base before you build up both the red and bleached bone.

Your work looks good, but its kind of hard to tell because the pictures are a little dark, and the flash washes out a lot of the work you've done. If you've got a desk lamp, I would invest in a daylight bulb. Put the bulb in and then point the lamp at what you're taking the photo of, and cover the light with a sheet of paper. That way you'll get the light you need, without having to invest in a full light box.

Thanks, but I actually didn't use flash and this was taken with light coming from a window nearby

And I did use a sheet of paper.. I guess it was just a crappy day for daylight shooting... <_< <_<
