Sons of Orar Tac Squad WIP

So, I was browsing 'How To Paint Space Marines', and came across a squad from the Sons of Orar. For some reason, I was taken with the scheme. And even after finding no concrete fluff to speak of (Tyranid hunters, maybe?), I thought I'd go ahead and paint up a few test minis.

Here's the look...basic red and white...

So, now that I have found some time, I've started a tac squad. My thought, since they're light on fluff, is to make them a plasma-heavy codex chapter. However, I'll be waiting until the new codex arrives to finalize any loadout.

At this point, I've only got them basecoated in Blood Red over a Chaos Black undercoat. I've experimented with Chestnut ink on a couple of test minis and am still trying to get the technique down. You'll see my latest attempt on the headless guy with one arm. I've still got some work to do to refine the technique, but I think it'll turn out nicely. A question though - would using something like the Sepia from the new wash set work better, or is there that much of a difference?

Only one has shoulders...and they're only tacked on. Nothing out of the ordinary on the poses, either.

In any case, here's the pics...comments welcomed.

And you know, I could have sworn that I caught all of the flash lines, but it appears that there may be a few that I need to go back and address.

Thx!

Well - here's some updated pics. Let me just say that Baal Red wash = teh win.

But here's the next question. Highlights. I know the common wisdom is to use the next lighter color in the line for general highlighting (in this case Blazing Orange)...but that seems to be too much contrast. Doing a 1:1 Blood Red-Blazing Orange wasn't showing up enough. Does anyone have a mix recommendation?

look...um..

The Sons of Orar are a DIY chapter made by Keith Robertson, an Eavy Metal member. He said as much when WD interviewed him. They feature in "how to paint marines" because GW reasoned they would look good, and Keith agreed.

It might be kinda mean, in a way, to take his idea and fluff (close combat oriented UM descendant Nid-Hunters) and make it your own.

So, while it sounds good. Just think about it. :)

Doh.

You've just given me another tidbit of info that I couldn't find anywhere - that they're close-combat oriented. And for that, I thank you. Not having cracked open a White Dwarf in a few years - I'm sure I've missed some details. Food for thought, certainly.

And to be certain sure, it's not my intent to co-opt the name & details and take them in an inappropriate direction...just thought they looked good and couldn't find a lot of details.

So I guess I should start looking for power gloves and chain swords in the bits box. :)

the way i found is either skip the highlight and do a light drybrush of blood to fix things, or highlight mecharius then wash again with baal (the first is a lot faster and looks good still).

I'll give the drybrushing a try and see how they look. Thanks!
