Legions buddies and enemies

Recommended Posts

to be fair to horus, he planned on slagging the loyalists the entire time, and would have soon if somebody didnt let go of angrons leash. the crazy traitor drop podded his world eaters in to kill the loyalists. the other traitors followed soon after.

Looking around for bits to start my army and i was wondering is forgeworld still on backorder for red scorpions? What do you guys think of death guard and world eaters? If i wanted to get some more info on the legions which book would be the best?

Here's a few ideas:

Iron Hands and Emperor's Children (from 'Fulgrim'):

- It was because of the fact that Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus were so close, that Ferrus took Fulgrim's betrayal so hard.

- The Black and Purple would work well together in an army and the two legions fought with different styles on the battle field that might be fun to adapt for the table top

Imperial Fists and the Nightlords (from 'The Dark King" and 'The Lightning Tower'):

*Warning! Potential Spoilers in the next idea*

- The pacification of the Cherot (sp?) system was under taken by the Nightlords, Imperial Fists and Emperor's Children. It was during this system pacification that Dorn saw the depth Konrad Curze's darkness and attempted to sanction the legion.

- I just like the weight of the back story in this pairing. Curze all most killed Dorn during the fallout of the incident. Dorn struggled later to understand Curze and the visions he had had (there's more to it but that's not important now). This created a better rival for Dorn than Peturabo. I never did like the "We're both really good at the same types of things, so we must be rivals" aspect of the Iron Warriors and Fists.

- This one could suck painting-wise though. The yellow of the Fists and the lightining bolt patterns of the 'Lords could be a royal pain to pull off. But if you have the skill (and patience!) it would look sweet...

Luna Wolves and almost any other Legion...

- Horus had a connection to all the other primarchs in some way that's worth exploring. The other legion opposite the Luna Wolves could be an eventual traitor or loyalist. Either way you have a narrative behind the pairing.

Add a couple Word Bearers as Independent Characters to your force:

- Individual Word Bearers seemed to be everywhere just before Horus' fall as "advisers".

- This would be cool story wise, I think. Have one Word Bearer character close to your commander as if he's whispering Lorgar's poisoned words into your commanders ear.

Just some ideas, hope they help

ZKF!

I've never heard anything about the Night Lords hating anyone other than the Imperial Fists, ever since Rogal got annoyed at Curze's visions. However, the event causing this rivalry took place just before the Night Lords went renegade, so they never got a chance to work alongside each other.

Another rivalry is the Alpha Legion and Ultramarines, who utterly loathed each other. The Ultramarines saw them as secretive upstarts who could never reach the heights of glory that they had, and the Alpha Legion see the Ultramarines as up-themselves old guys who can't appreciate innovation, and stay only to tried-and-true methods. Great mix if I ever saw one, in your way I mean.

So I can assume all the legions would be fine with working with the sons of horus/ luna wolves? I should make my decision in the coming weeks, right now im looking for forgeworld items in the USA.

Did any of famous captains every lead another chapter for example brother captain garro? Did he ever lead a force that wasn't death guard?

I was leaning towards salamanders and night lords, the though of painting the lighting bolts seem to advance for me. So my question did the sallies have any other friends or rivals?

My top 5 fav themes

Blood Angels and Emperor Children ( #1)

Emperor Children and Iron Hands ( The betrayal value is so high)

Sallies and Alpha legion ( just throwing that in, no fluff for it. I just like those two legions)

Alpha legions and Ultras ( the ultras seem to arrogant in those days and the rivalry is similar to a big brother and a little brother)

Iron warriors and world eaters/space wolves ( siege specialist with the best assault troops)

Dark angels and space wolves (classic)

on the top 5 themes, i agree most are pretty cool except for the space wolves and iron warriors. i just dont see the sons of russ being all that brotherly with so lifeless a legion. the brutalness of the siege life drained the humanity from the legion.

i do see the world eaters being friendly towards them, as they bust the walls and the world eaters eat anything, babies included, behind the walls.

and dont forget the emperor's children served alongside the luna wolves for two centuries i think, after their creation, to learn from the experience of the older legion. these two would make a solid team.

I see where you are coming from. Did the iron warriors have any friends then? As for the word bearers officer sound good maybe I'll add one to my command squad. I wanted to have my army led by a custodian( right name?) or by a fame captain from another chapter with his command squad filled mostly by his legion and a few chosen men from the two legions. I don't if you guys think this is a good idea or I can go with a custodian command squad using the honor guard rules.

The Iron Warriors were always a Legion that were distant from their brother marines...

the imperial fists were arrogant, and took every ounce of glory that came their way

the world eaters were crazed brutes, more a tool for their brutal uses

the salamnders had their artisan gift, but kept close ties to the humanity the Iron Warriors long discarded

the closet thing to allies the IWs had was the adeptus mech, for Pertabo could easily debate the workings of a marco cannon or displacer beam more easily than he could relate this his gene-brothers

i dont remember much mention of close ties to other legions, but maybe future HH books will change that.

the only legion i believe got along with the Iron Warriors were the Luna Wolves, which probably made the heresy so much easier.

if your making a combined SM army, a idea would be to use the current SM rules, adapting certain roles to certain Legions such as:

allied Grey Knight Grand Master= Adeptus Custodes

Chaplain= Word Bearer

Librarian= Thousand Sons

Tech Marine= Iron Warrior officer

just my two cents.

How about Word Bearers and Ultramarines? The Emperor publicly reprimanded Lorgar for his faith while praising Roboute for his dedication. Since then the Word Bearers hated the Ultramarines, jealousy is a horrible thing.

I'm planning on doing a Word Bearer's force festooned with Ultramarine trophies.

I trying to make an army list so I know what I need to buy... but then i thought how much of a point difference will there be with the new codex.

Do you guys think this will be good for the new codex 500 pts. I have two possible list based on what i go on.

Army 1

Captain w/ 5 command squad w/ vet sarge w/ pw, and 2 flamers

5 squad w/ vet sarge w/ pf, flamer, 3 bolters

5 squad w/ ML, 4 bolters

Army 2

Chaplain

5 man squad with plasma gun, 4 bolters

5 man squad with Ml, 4 bolters

Dreadnought with plasma cannon

I heard that the Raven Guard and Sallies use to work good together any true to that?

Well...

We know of one time they worked together that didn't work out so well...

Personally, I think you should go with the pairing of Legions that seems most interesting to you. You seemed really keen on the Blood Angels and Emperor's Children force. So, go with that. If you really dig the idea at the beginning then you're more likely to stay interested and get the army finished.

You can always right your own fluff for the Strike Force. Sure the Horus Heresy novels have given us a lot of great fluff to work with, but they don't cover everything. So you can come up with your own narrative.

Plus, you can always convert and paint up another Legion to add or swap in later for a more "historic" army.

ZKF!

Well, Im looking for a force that would be interesting, fluffy, and their colors would go good together. Im currently making list of bits I'll need.

Changed the List ( I plan to start one army then if I have time then the other choices)

1) BA and Emperor Children

2) Emperor Children and Iron hands

3) Alpha Legion and Ultras

4) Sallies and raven guard

I do like the space wolves and dark angels theme ,but what codex would I use for the army list?

Considering the DA codex is absolute rubbish and the SW is too space-wolves, I'dgo for the middle ground and choose the upcoming marine codex since you can find a balance there.

@ silent shadow.

I was talking about the HQS choices in the CSM codex. I think of use the current sm codex to base my army. I want to have a custodian as the leader of my army, but what HQ choice? Also modeling question I wanted to give him the sword and combat shield ,but I never seen them use sword and shields would that be ok?

My mistake, I'd still say use new marine codex because there are so many more options, both for units and HQ's so that way you can give him what you want, because I think chapter masters are going to have tons of options, perfect for a custodian.

Sword and combat shield may not be the fluffiest of weapons but if it gets the job done who cares. :P

Yeah, I just really think it look better then a spear with a gun attach to it. I think i have it narrowed down to three now

1. alpha legion and ultramarines

2. emperor children and iron hands

3. sallies and raven guard

It may have been mentionned before, but Ferus Manus of the Iron hands and Vulkan of the Salamanders were quite close, as well- Vulkan even gave Ferus a rare Firedrake banner and Ferus made Vulkan some sort of "death-ray" master-crafted pistol (Seems to have been a mix of lascannon and meltagun...lol). Those two legions would look quite cool together on the table; All those bionic bits and firedrake cloaks/loincloths...

Thanks , it a tough choice I really like those legions i have posted earlier.. i should be able to order my ph stuff soon... Did the iron hands have their left hands chop off before the death of ferus? I think the easiest ones for me to do is sallies and iron hands, but the only way to get iron hands bits is through the 45 tactical box so expansive! Do you guys think it would be cool having a famous officer from another legion leading the army for example Garro ?
Yeah I went online and saw that the iron hand tact. box vet had a thunder hammer so I thinking of buying that to help kick start off my army. I still plan to buy some PH torso maybe some black templars ones. Does anyone know the exact iron hands specific bits that come in the box? Also would the red scorpions still be a good buy versus going on to ebay and looking for gw ph bits?
Also would the red scorpions still be a good buy versus going on to ebay and looking for gw ph bits?

Um...well the Red Scorpions aren't pre heresy, and if that's what you're going for, then the Scorpions would be right out of that picture. Post heresy, they'd be neat to see fielded alongside the Iron Hands and Salamanders, but i think fluffwise, you could have some reeeaalll interesting conversations between them.

What with the Red Scorpions uber-codex mindset and the Sallies and Iron Hands kind of "...meh, that's nice..." attitude...could be fun.
