+++ SCIONS OF EURYALE +++

“Guardians of mankind,

Arbiters of the unjust,

Preachers of His Will,

Harbingers of His Wrath,

Scions of Euryale”

Well, I’m back on the BandC. Real life set upon me the task of sitting my Leaving Certificate (the Irish version of the A levels), so I had to take a break from the hobby for almost a year. That’s done, and now that I have my place in uni I figure I may as well show you what I have been doing (admittedly somewhat during that hobby break!) in the meantime (also).

If you stretch your mind back to my last log I was searching for a way to true scale marines using only power armour components (save the termie parts for the termies!). With what I learned from my previous efforts, and inspiration from Maelis, Brother Sinaer, Migsula, Elusive71 primarily (as well as the work of many other skilled hobbyists), I believe I have arrived with a result I like.

Ok, so I had achieved (almost) the image of the Emperor’s Finest that I was looking for. Detailing at a later stage would reach that result. However I still needed a chapter for these guys. At the beginning I had toyed with the idea of either Ultras, or a successor chapter (Ultra or non-Ultra). So I decided to try my hand at creating my own. Now prepare yourselves, there may be some clichés here, but I don’t really mind that. First of all, the big cliché. I always had a mild interest in… you guessed it, Greek mythology, and I wanted to incorporate that in somehow, most likely in the chapter name. In order to lessen the cliché effect I wanted to use something I thought was pretty unheard of… until God of War spoiled it for me. However, unfazed (well, a little put off) I decided to use the name in a different manner, which shall be revealed when I sort out the fluff. Anyway as you may have guessed by the intro the name is Scions of Euryale.

Anyway enough rambling, here’s what I have done in the last year (mostly the last two months). As you can see I have included one of my favourite models as a size comparison! (the base is misleading but he is the exact size as a cadian or standard SM).

My first 10 man tactical squad, all 9 I have built so far!

The first 3 marines I built using the new method (the plasma gunner was in fact the prototype).

Here's some colour swatches for the scheme. I originally thought of using the one with bone on just the shoulder rims and helmet (and I am currently painting a test marine in that scheme).

Here you go!

All and any C+C welcome and greatly appreciated!! :)

is it just me, o are they too..... skinny?

Admittedly, they do look quite thin. There is a point where they do get a bit lanky when you extend the legs to a certain extent. however, I do like it. I'll look into beefing up the legs though, I'm just a little reluctant to go over the detail on the thighs as I've put the effort into trying to preserve it. Anyway enough excuses, I'll give it a go on a spare set of legs and you never know, I may even prefer it! :P

Thanks and keep the comments coming! :)

I've been checking this thread out on the odd occasion today. I like the idea you have, and you obviously have some skill at sculpting. IMHO the legs should be left as they are. The detailing on them is fine, and I don't think they are too skinny, however, the rest of the body is slightly disproportionate at the moment. The torso looks as though it needs the most work, some serious working of the mid waist section will go along way to making the models look less skinny and lanky. Perhaps add a few strips of plasticard to lengthen the torso area as well. With a few minor adjustments in that torso area, these could be some extremely fine looking miniatures.

I hope you don't mind, but I (very) quickly took the liberty of doing a rough sketch to illustrate. The figure on the left is based on one of your mini's in its present state. The one on the right has had his torso thickened & IMO feels a lot more in proportion with the legs of the mini and would add a certain weight to the mini:

how did you make them and tutorial please. Otherwise, great job! Can we expect an entire army of these guys?

All shall be revealed when I decide what I'm going to do first of all regarding the conversions. Hopefully, I will do my best to make an army (many items in the new codex are very tempting).

I'm a bit reluctant to change the torso lenght as they are already quite long, but I will widen them somewhat.

Anyway, dilemma time! I tried bulking up a leg but I had to lenghten it to keep the look I'm going for. However I'm not sure what I think about it. I like the look of it but I don't want to make them too large (after all I still want to use the standard vehicles without too much work).

The non bionic leg on the left marine is the new one.

More on the vehicle side of things tomorrow.

Ok, so I promised a vehicle pic, so without further ado, heres what I have done to a speeder:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Marines/DSCN2341.jpg

It's approx 1mm taller, and 0.5mm extra armour all round the nose. The modified pilots' heads just reach slightly over the frame but not over the roll bar so I don't mind it too much. This I suppose is a perfect example of the work I am trying to do to any vehicles I should buy, as I don't want them too much larger than the stock models. Although, I have just recieved a FW mkIV dread which shall certainly get extra special attention :( .

Anyway, I would really appreciate any thoughts on the image in my previous post regarding "skinny-ness" of the marines. I would like to point out at this point that although I am going for the true scale idea, I am looking for the more athlethic look for my marines as opposed to the heavier look that you see in marines made from the termie parts, hence why I have slightly lenghtened the new leg in my previous post.

Thanks ^_^

Edit: the artwork I am basing my "scale" off can be found on:

- pages 6+7 of the current marine codex

- pages 0+1 of the 4th ed rulebook (the Adeptus Astartes two-page piece)

- the art at the bottom of page 54 of UK WD345 (also could someone tell me where I could find a larger more complete version of that?).

I've made a mock-up of the bulkier legs here:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Marines/DSCN2342.jpg

They do look ok in my opinion, but I don't like them for the following reasons;

1. To keep the slim look I am going for, I would have to make them slightly taller than my current marines. This would make truescaling other things such as termie armour and vehicles more difficult.

2. They are bulkier and limit movement.

3. They take longer to build.

I will prime one tomorrow to see how it looks in one colour (as opposed to the GS/milliput/plastic mix I have now).

All feedback greatly appreciated! :)

The new legs, in my opinion, makes the marine look stiff. The one on the right looks better because they are showing some kind of movement instead of standing up straight.

That's what I was thinking, because without bulking up the groin (which would look stupid and requiring bulking up the rest of the torso to compensate) the size of the upper thigh really limits the movement and as such the dynamicism of the marines suffers.

Well, I have good news and bad news.

Good news is I have the bases somewhat sorted, as can be seen on this marine:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Marines/DSCN2343.jpg

This is still awaiting sand, grit and other gubbinz (I want them to look like they are in a slightly industrial area).

In other good news I have started on this lovely model:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Marines/DSCN2344.jpg

The siege arm will be lenghtened, as may the assault cannon shoulder and the torso main armour.

However, here's the bad news. Painting has been delayed as my pot of UM blue has a suspicious tint of purple to it (bad excuse I know but I want to paint these to the best standard I can, so I want to get the scheme right on a standard marine first). Maybe this is the actual colour (I havent used it for a long time), or maybe it has gone off somehow (if that's even possible?).

On top of that I am still somewhat unsure on the scheme, here's how it stands at the moment (although the beige may shift more towards grey in the end).

As usual all C+C greatly appreciated! ;)

looks really nice so far dude. cant wait till you start painting!! *looks at um blue* yea, mine looks a bit purplish too. just test it on a blank piece of something.

my only suggestion is for future true scale goodness. try to model the legs so that their knees are bent or slightly bent. it makes them look less skinny and a bit more bulky. straight legs looks scrawny are wimpish.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aq...es/DSCN2342.jpg

in this, the marine in the middle looks much better than the marine on the left for this reason

nonetheless, KICKASS TRUE SCALING!!! not as much sculpting and converting as other true scale jobs but looks just as good if not better. keep it up!

I like them...they look more artsy. I also like the fact that you concentrate on the legs...I thought I was the only one who saw them as under-scale.

Thanks lunchbox, I really appreciate it. It's good to see that at least the look I am going for can be seen in the minis, even without paint. :)

Now for progress, I have made some more progress on the dread, although everything is just bluetacked together it is progress none the less.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Marines/DSCN2349.jpg

Now, here is an example of what I start doing from time to time when I should be making legs for my marines (which is the most laborious part of the conversion). I often get sidetracked converting helmets as you can see:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v503/-Aquilla-/Marines/DSCN2351.jpg

Blessings of cyber cookies to whoever can guess what the source model for the faceplate was! (and in fact the breastplate. Also, this guy is destined to become the sergeant, although most likely with a helmetless head).

I do have bad news though, I am starting uni next week so hobby-work shall be limited to weekends for the meantime.

As usual all and any C+C, opinions, advice, rants, insults etc gratefully accepted and appreciated!

(Though maybe not so much the rants and insults!)

:D
