JetfireUK
Hi There, Having just finished painting my first Night Lord I wanted to get your feedback whilst I'm working my way through the Terminator Squad. So far I've assembled all five figures and base coated them. I've started work on the first one - the Sargent and would like your feedback whilst I'm working through the figures as I want to improve my skill. I think that I've made a fair start but I wanted to know whether I should use highlighting on the dark blue armour plates. I didn't use it much on the Terminator Lord as I didn't want it to compete with the lightning effect - what do you think? Here's my first shot - the parts of the figure are all held together with blue tac as I like being able to paint everything first before I finally assemble the figure. Edit: So far I have base coated the metallic trim, red cloth, skull and chains which is why they may not appear to 'pop' in the image. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270524.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145282-night-lords-wip-terminators/ Share on other sites
Montuhotep
Suitably nasty  The bare head is nice and makes for a good contrast with the dark armour - the lightning bolts are very nicely done. Tyrannicide
Damn cool. I think the lightning has turned out well, and your gold flows well with that deep blue you've created. Nice job! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145282-night-lords-wip-terminators/#findComment-1684214 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Yes I like that, very simple and effective (simple as in clean good painting). Most excellent. Hubernator
Tis an awesomey painted model. Excellent work on the lightning :( Nice one. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145282-night-lords-wip-terminators/#findComment-1684276 Share on other sites
Vredesbyrd
As has been states the contrast between the pale head and the dark armour makes his head really 'pop' out, and that lightning freehand is awesome. How do you plan on painting the fingers of his Lightning Claws, will it be the same as the trim on his armour or different to make them stand out more? JetfireUK
Thanks for all your comments so far. Out of all of the loyal and traitor astartes my favourite colour scheme are of the Night Lords and I've wanted to paint them since seeing the old Metal Chaos Terminator box art. As for the Lightning Claws I think that I'm going to attempt the lightning effect on them too - just in a smaller scale. I thought of painting them in boltgun metal but I think it'd be great if I could carry off the lightning effect. I'll keep you all posted on progress - hopefully I'll have some more tomorrow. Thanks again and please keep the comments and criticisms coming! JetfireUK
Hi Folks. Just a brief update. I've started the lightning effect on the right arm of the terminator. Here are a couple of shots - sorry they're a little blurry but they give you the general idea of what the arms will look like when finished. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270527.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270529.jpg Again, I haven't done any highlighting - I've just added a wash for the metallics so far as I want to get the lightning effects done before moving on. What do you think - shall I use this effect or go for metals instead? JetfireUK
Hi All, Here's an update on my Terminator Squad so far. I haven't finished any of the three figures shown here - mostly I have done the lightning effect and done a wash on the metallics on the figures. I aim to get all five to this stage before I start working on the highlights and details. I know that there are a lot of things to finish and tidy up, but what do you think so far? One thing that I'm not sure about is how to highlight the Tin Bitz parts of the armour - would a mix of Dwarf Bronze work followed by Mithril Silver? As always comments and criticisms are very welcome. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270536.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270537.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270538.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270539.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270535.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145282-night-lords-wip-terminators/#findComment-1689783 Share on other sites

Wolf89
That is some really nice work, looks like it took a really long time, keep up the great work! ^_^ Will you be finishing off the bases? mainly just the edges that touch the board, I can see different shades of paint everywhere, you might want to make it one uniform color like a scorched brown or something. CaptainLaevitacus
I like how that is turning out very nice can't wait for more. I really enjoy dark blue colors being used on any models so this looks fantastic to me Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145282-night-lords-wip-terminators/#findComment-1690244 Share on other sites
JetfireUK
Thanks for your comments! I've found that the GW washes are great for knocking back the lighter colours - I wash the entire figure with a 60:40 mix of Enchanted Blue and Regal Blue and the GW Asurmen Blue wash helps to take the edge of the brightness to make it fit in nicely. Will you be finishing off the bases? mainly just the edges that touch the board, I can see different shades of paint everywhere, you might want to make it one uniform color like a scorched brown or something. The bases are about half done - I've dry brushed them to get the earthy tones but I've got to go back and finish painting the razor wire and other details. I'm going to finish off painting the terminators first before I come back to the bases. I'll probably end up using Scorched Earth to paint the edges of the bases to fit in with my other Chaos figures. Any thoughts about how to highlight the Tin Bitz? Brother Nihm
Any thoughts about how to highlight the Tin Bitz?My base gold is a lot like Tin Bitz and I use VGC Shining Gold (I forgot the name of the GW equivalent) mixed with Scorched Brown (70:30).Followed by a highlight of thinned Shining Gold + a few washes. Last is a highlight of Shining Gold + Chainmail (50:50). It looks like: this which I personally think is too light for your dark hues, so I suggest you don't highlight up with chainmail and simply use gold as the final highlight. My 2 Kraks Cheers Brother Nimh for the suggestion on the metallics. I think that you're right about not going straight up to the silvers as a final highlight although I might add some Chainmail into the golds to lighten things slightly. I really like your Night Lord Terminators - they encouraged me to give them a go. How did you do the skull design on the helmets? I would like to get them a go but my freehand is very poor. Brother Nihm
Thank you. ;) As for the skull motifs, I just kept trying to envision how the design would look in 3d - across the helmets, you can see my attempts chronologically from this (it wasn't supposed to be a skull really, but I call him Elton now..), to this, to this and finally: this I just kept trying. So, just keep practising, I'm sure you can do better (based on the fantastic flesh tones on yours)! JetfireUK
No problem, I really like the style of your Chaos figures. Thanks for photos - those are very useful and pretty inspiring and I especially like what you've done with the beaky helmet. I'll have a play around with a few spare helmets and see what I can come up with. JetfireUK
Okay chaps, here's an update on the terminators. I need to thank Brother Nimh for his ideas on the skull motifs on the helmets - I think that once finished they'll give the Night Lords that added bit of character - harking back to the pre-heresy armour colours. None of the figures are assembled - they're all stuck together with blu-tac. I've almost finished the lightning on the armour of each terminator and I've done the basic washes of black and brown to the armour and weapons. Having looked at a few sites to get an idea how to highlight the tin bitz, I think that I'll use dwarf bronze and highlight it with gold. So do you think that the figures tie in together as a unit so far? This is my first attempt at working one a squad instead of completing each figure individually. Any C+C would be great! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270548.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270550.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y104/JetfireUK/SL270551.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145282-night-lords-wip-terminators/#findComment-1698324 Share on other sites
DiStudios
Looking nice and uniformed, everything looks consistent. One thing that I've noticed in the photos is that I forgot to drill out the barrels on any of the weapons, but that's an easy fix. I'll make sure that the trophy racks are fixed on once I've finished getting rid of the mold lines and painted them. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145282-night-lords-wip-terminators/#findComment-1698364 Share on other sites
nurglespuss
Ah yes the trophy rack mouldlines :) theyre everywhere!! The skulls have worked particularly well, really help to centre the model. I feel this is also true of the new fellow too. I love the effect of having the lightning all over him, but the downside is his head 'focal point' has no target to look for (that is of course just my personal opinion). They look really big and menacing, which is of course your goal! Brother Nihm
Konrad approves! A word of advice, be careful when you transport your models once you've attached the trophy racks as they are quite fragile and break/bend easily. That's why I left mine off even though it's 100% more fluffy to have them on. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/145282-night-lords-wip-terminators/#findComment-1698453 Share on other sites
Drathmere
These are great, I'd love to battle them with my Iron Scythes! I use dwarf bronze and gold to highlight my tin as well, usually following it with a wash of badab mud. How long does it take to do all of the lightning? It looks like it could take an age and a half. The skulls on the helmets are a really nice touch, as well as the detailed basing. I love the metal fence like base, and the razor wire. It may be time for me to move away from flocked green bases!
