Vulkan He'stan's artifact hunters army

O.K. so my next army will be salamanders, now I just need a Vulkan He'stan model and I'm ready to go... (not quite, I still need to remodel some vindi's to make them more "sallie-like" )

Simple body, (GK in PA), all that's added so far is some GS and I'll be adding in some scales to the cloak (3+ invulnerable :o )

Then a little touching up and he'll be ready to paint.

I didn't want to make this conversion last too long, seeing as GW will no doubt have a model for him out within 4-5 months for sure, I just wanted to have something unique to hold me over until then.

I like the pose on this model, and even though Vulkan is carrying his spear with two hands, I figured he could hold it in one while he was using his heavy flamer ;)

I know I know... "I can see your fingerprints!", but this is still a WIP and those fingerprints will be gone soon enough with little tiny scales, (or big ones if I get lazy), so if anything, I think the fingerprints will help grip the scales better for easier modeling.

If anyone else has suggestions on what to do (especially for the storm bolter into a heavy flamer conversion (currently just smoothed out the bolter clips to make it look more like a tube) let me know.

Also, if anyone else is planning on doing this model, I'd love to see your version of him. ^_^

hmm

had this suggested to me

ya'know the GK base model

It does look good...

...for a brother captain

but it dosn't really represent the artwork of VH at all

yes the blade does

and the gun gaunltlet

but the strom bolter dosn't work well for the flamer gauntlet

and the GK power armour dosn't work well for artificer armour in my opinion

plus you need scales on the cloak

salamaders and all

great vision for the pose you wanted....

same as others have said:

scales on the cloak, and a heavy flamer,

If you are playing strict WYSIWYG, maybe have a flamer on a sling against his side or back...

I think in the new "dex, Vulkan will have a Hvy. flamer as part of his gear!

bring on the horde!

Thanks for the posts. ^_^

As for the artificer armor, I do think it's ornate enough, but on the legs I might add a few "flakes" of armor to resemble more artificer.

The cloak WILL have scales on it. ;) I'm playing around with the size though, this was supposidly an artifact from Vulkan, (at least the same time) and the stories suggest gargantuan fire drakes, so I'd imagine the scales would be really big. So I think I'll make the scales about 1mm in legnth each with points and such and go from there. These would also be easier to paint not to mention model.

As for the heavy flamer on his arm, I might dremel some off and place somewhat of a few small tubes on top (the picture showed what seems to be 4 holes on top of a small power fist with some fuel injectors from an arm sling).

The thing that sold me on this model rather than another SM model is the pose, I feel that nothing says salamanders more than a heavy flamer pointed right at you. ;)

Another thought about converting the storm bolter into a heavy flamer brings me back to 1.5 with the old flamer pistol things (for the love of god I can't remember what they're called), and chop those off so the ends are all that's left, then attach two of those to the ends of the stormbolter barrels in place of them. Thoughts?

Flame-pistol :>

And yes, add fuel tanks on back pack and that would work great :>

Flame-pistol, perfect! :o

The tanks are what worry me, I'm torn between on the back, or on one of his legs? Also the tank should be no more than 1.5-2mm in legnth so I'm thinking about using one of the Multi-Melta tanks that I have laying around everywhere from 9+ land speeders. :)

Also thinking about adding 1-2 small wires (I'll use the ones from a electrical class I'm taking, they're very small and are used on "bread boards", I think they'll be perfect porportions) under the gun sling.

Another possible barrel replacement could be the immolator tips on their side?

^visual image^

If neither appeal to me, I might just model my own tips, both seem too cone shaped and I never took a liking to that style, I might just make little cylinders with multiple holes in them?

*Update*

I did some tedious work making the scales for a bit now, (half were made individually, then I found an easier way that took 1/3 the time ;) ).

Also included is a front view that has a little more added to the frontal cape to make it look like it "tucks" under the power armor. Also a view of the tank I will be using for the heavy flamer that will be located on his backpack.

some look good, others meh, but I'm done with it and I'm lazy so it's staying this way. :D

DIE INFIDELS!

Got Fuel?

The idea of the cloak is to make it look a little "furry" underneath because in the picture of Vulkan He'stan, his cloak looks like it has little frills or something on them.

I'm really picture crazy now that I have a camera that you can actually see stuff on.

A few minutes out in the barn and I have a smooth area to attach my flamer tips to.

Question is whether I use a heavy flamer tip, or use a flamer tip (don't know if heavy flamer will fit, but I hope it does because otherwise people out there will be like... WYSIWYG and it won't be He'stan and omg all hell will break loose ;) )

More pics sure to come later tonight, I'm whipping up another batch of GS to work on the heavy flamer tip, the fuel injection system and the fuel tank itself. I might even have the time to start and possibly finish the artificer armor conversions I'm planning on doing. Then he'll be all done for me to show off at my 'ard boyz on saturday, hopefully painted off for the 40k radio the following saturday (even though I'm judging and not playing -_- ).

I hope he turns some heads.

get rid of the gravity defying purity seal!

i used that pose for my converted inquisitor (GK nemesis weapons are grat for that...) and the purity seal looked awful...

in other news, very nice model.

I'll see what I can do about that purity seal, thanks for the heads-up :(

Without further adu, the flamer tips are on!

Top view (you can also see part of the fuel injection system on the back)

I think it'll grow on me, a little funky at first, but hey, no one knows what this thing looks like right? well to me it looks like this.

Hopefully tonight I can finish up the backpack and fuel injection.

I think this will be the last post for tonight with pictures (I need to save some progress for tomorrow).

Hopefully you guys enjoy how the heavy flamer came out as much as I did.

This shows one of the cylinder fuel tanks hooked up to the injection mechanism.

Thoughts? Concerns? Ideas? all welcome. :(

okay 2 things:

first off, im not too keen on that cape. I think the scales need to be smaller, or the cape needs to have a sense of flow as it seems like a stiff sheet at present.

secondly, i like the flamer conversion a lot, however, the top of the gun still seems too bolter like. I'd recommend cutting a chaos vehicle bit (the dragon head looking one) to fit and stick it on top-- nice and salamandery :tu:

looking great!!

I would reommend just removing the bolter 'sight' that will stop it looking anything bolter like.

Also I think with the cape, I would add severa smaller scales (flatter) scales to the large ones to break it up a little more.

Why is the seal gravity defying? If he is sweeping his arm, the seal would flap everywhere.

Thanks for all your posts, I'm glad some of you like it.

The biggest discussion seems to be the size of the scales, I however think they are dead on, as stories suggest that during Vulkan's early years as the Primarch, he fought gigantic fire drakes, hence really large scales.

However, I'm not a specialist in this field, so as reptiles grow, I'm not sure if the scales grow as well, or if they just grow more of them.

On his front I've added in a smaller cloak as the picture suggests, this will definately contain smaller scales as it's from He'stan's time not Vulkan's and they don't kill larger drakes I guess.

I like the Idea about chopping down the bolter head scope and adding in the chaos one with more knotches (that's very sallie like). I'll see what I got when I get home, if not I may have to GS some.

The cloak in general I was going to paint all molten lava like as well, the recesses glowing in a firery glaze and the tops an ashy black. I think this would be a cool effect.

I am starting to like the idea of adding smaller scales to the larger cloak though, maybe in some of the recesses, but there isn't that much room. Maybe it'll grow on you guys once painted?

Another thought is I was thinking of adding in a little "tube" connecting both canisters on the ends or just leaving them how they are and not adding too much to crowd the model?

Theres some artwork of He'stan in the new codex. The flamer on his arm has a spout/nozzle thats fashioned to look like a dragons/salamanders head.

As for this, I didn't see anything in the picture that suggested a dragons/salamanders head. What I saw was a smaller version of a power fist with 4 nozzels and a fuel injection system hooked up to the back. If there is another picture, or I missed something in this one please point it out. ;) Even though I wouldn't change this model to resemble that, it would still be cool to know.

Well I'm not positive (and I think some of you might not agree) but Vulkan He'stan is done and ready to be painted!

I took the advice of The_Chaplain and used a chaos bolter top for my heavy flamer conversion and I'm really liking it (great tip made it look a lot better, thanks Chap). I also took the advice about making smaller scales to fit between the larger scales. This wasn't the BEST outcome I could have done, but I think it looks better than it did before.

Here you can clearly see his front scale cloak, here the scales are MUCH smaller due to it not being from the Primarch Vulkan's time (where I believe the fire drakes to have been larger). Also you can see the chaos bolter top which I really like. :tu:

Here is somewhat of a good view of his "improved" Kesare's Mantle. Hope you guys like it.

Hope you guys like the transition from GK to He'stan as much as I did, now it's time to prime and paint! (I'll let all the GS cure overnight just to be safe) Possibly start painting tomorrow and Friday, finishing up around next week.

This was my first major conversion model (GS'ing a beard and hair and such on some SW models doesn't really cut it), and I'm quite proud of it and I hope some of you enjoyed following along with me.

Thanks again for all the comments and ideas to help make this guy turn out the way I had him in my mind! :)

ok im starting to rectract my comments

this has come a long way

it does look alot better, like 500% better

honestly

the scales, albiet a little chunky, are effective

and the flamer guantlet is sweet

and miht be stolen =P haha

you have inspired me.

honestly!

I shall have to attempt my own version of vulkan

I'm eyeing up the Emperors champion body atm....

looks suitably ornate, and sort of resembls the artwork

back to the point

good prgoress

keep it up
