wheres the salamanders symbol gonna go ?

I'm glad you came around <_<

According to the picture, I see a symbol on his hand (covered up by the chaos bolter top), as well as a symbol on his left leg, currently, his left leg is about the only spot that isn't taken up. :)

I was thinking about putting a symbol on his right shoulderpad, but I think it'd be best left black and his name (not Vulkan but He'stan, unless others object to this) across the small "name tag".

Can't wait to see your version DarKHaZZ13, I'm sure there will be a nice variety of base models people will choose.

My version of Vulkan...

Its an old chapter master sculpt I made a while back, now I´m thinking of converting him to Vukan, that or making one from scratch.

Anyway, thought you could maybe get some ideas to your Vulkan attempt so here he is:

I started playing around with some base coats (still new to salamanders so I still need to find a great color pattern), and I decided to paint the fuel injection because it's with colors I know (blues and grays being space wolves and all :P ) so I wanted to know what you guys thought about the color and if it doesn't fit well or not.

The other option for the tubes would be red tones, but I really like the blue.

A little bit of an update and your guys' suggestions on whether to keep it this color scheme or not...

He'stan's Kesare's Mantle brings to mind of a fiery cloak so I painted it somewhat like a lava-fiery effect. Tell me what you guys think. (I think it contrasts extremely well with the blue tubes as well to his heavy flamer.

I also painted the blade in such a way, I hope you guys like it. Again, let me know if this is appealing or not, I can easily paint them differently if it doesn't do Salamanders justice.

The rest of the spear will most likely be finished in a blue fashion like I did with the tubes, it contrasts the fire nicely (who would have thought shades of blue and orange... :D sarcasm ftw) so I think it would make the spear look great as well. Again, tell me what you guys think, or what you think the spear should be like.

-edit-

Whoops, looks like I forgot to take an updated photo of the spear head, it's got a little bit of white in certain thicker areas. More pictures to come when I get more work done on the spear and armor. Ideas always welcome!

I got some more painting done before I'm off to work. (I can't wait to bring this thing to Ard boyz tomorrow, my one buddy will be amazed I think (he loves salamanders).

I basically added a lot of gold and silver to him, I painted half his helm gold and I like the way that turned out.

My original plan was to do NMM but I suck at painting so I didn't even bother. -_-

I painted his front scales in brown shades, his back has the molten effect, and it's growing on me, I'm still not too keen on it (especially the yellow, it reminds me of playdoh for some reason) but I'm sure when I'm looking at it 2.5-3 feet away on the board it'll look fine. :D

Here's a little better view of his Heavy Flamer where I tried my best to make it look ok with some gold and silver, reds, and shades of black. You can also somewhat see his blade a little better (added some whites and refined the black some). Any advice on how to paint the spear handle would be appreciated, I still don't know if the blue effect will be good or not.

Here's a back shot, I added in some more gold and silver here and there... maybe add a little more watered down red in the recesses so not as much yellow and white shows? :P

O.K. so without any ideas or comments I finished him up and I'm done with him (he'll only be in my army for half a year or less until GW comes out with a model for him) so without any more stalling, I give you my version of Vulkan He'stan.

(see it is Vulkan He'stan... there's his name, though badly written, it's there)

I hope you guys like it, I'm glad the way he turned out, I just wish I could paint better. :)

Oh, this is officially my first salamander as well, so yea I guess my color scheme will only get better with time? :D

The base is what worries me, I'm very fond of snow, ice, that whole thing and I was planning on doing the same here... I'm just afraid people will flame me and say to go lava all the way. I look at it this way, he's hunting for artifacts, he's bound to stumble on some snow somewhere!

I really really like him.

Sure the painting is a bit rough here and there, but it doesn't matter, the imagery is great! He looks nothing like the original model used for conversion, I especially like the scaly 'loin cloth' and the half/half helmet.

In fact, you've inspired me to do my own salamander (not He-stan [by the power of southpark!]) but just a terminator. great, great job :>

VERY VERY nice model.

I am sorry to say I don't particularly think parts of the painting dont do it justice...

I would suggest drilling out the barrels to the heavy flamers, then painting them a scorched mettalic scheme.

What I *ahem* USED to do for my flamers, (now that I have switched to NMM) is paint a base of boltgun metal, then paint the DRILLED barrel black, working to scorched brown then to boltgun metal, blending TOWARDS the head...

Thanks for your comments and Ideas. :)

I took He'stan to the ard boyz today and it surprised some fellow gamers that I've known for a long time (all veteran gamers with at least 8+ years of 40k experience) and they were surprised at both how much I increased in both sculpting and painting technique.

I had some random show player who came for the tournament who supposedly has been playing for a long time tell me that he would never allow that model to be used as He'stan. He was a complete @$$ and I'm glad he never placed. His reasoning behind it was that the relic blade wasn't in 2 hands... :)

i would like to see him try to make one <_<. guys like him never amount to much, he probaly doesn't even do conversions, he is just a hater. what is your next project? btw do you have pictures of your sallie army w/He'stan?

What other sallies? I've basically got one other sallie done with a flamer (figured the flamer marine would give me more inspiration to paint more salamandery ;) ).

As for a project, I've been debating between the scratch vindicators (rhinos with some special tubing, lots of GS and still need something to count as a "siege shield"...) with some possible forge world salamander brass parts (still trying to work a group purchase with some buddies for free shipping). The other project that I'd want to do next would be my assault terminators, they would be just adding some scaly GS here and there, the talbards with scales and possibly sallie storm shields to go with it.

Any suggestions you can PM me please, I'll keep this WIP thread to finish my whole army.

-edit-

I also have my 3 landspeeders with MM's to convert a bit and paint. ;)

hey man :> yeah that guy was a dafty, silly fellow.

Well I emailed you a pic t'other day as it were (update here in forum) and I wonder if it might be of some use to you with the terminators. I don't know if you like the effect (I dint't till I painted it) but cutting up thin plasticard, and patiently gluing little 'scales' onto a terminators (maybe not ALL over, but on the greaves, or shouder pad etc) could look quite effective. Anyway just an idea! plus on the shielf, you could glue scales closealy fitting all around the terminator symbol?

hope to see more soon!!

I find for scales, it's far easier to take some green stuff and roll it into a long string. Allow the string to cure completely and then slice off very thin slices as you need them. The green stuff will still slice fairly easily even when fully cured, and this way you have a ready supply of scales for your sallies.

That is something to think about, I'm pretty sure the only things left to do scales on though is my terminators and possibly on some vehicle parts, other than that my tac marines and scouts, etc. will only look salamandery due to their colors. :)

I got your PM nurglepuss and I really liked what you were doing, I don't want to reveal to much about your project, but I'm looking forward to the rest of what you're doing. :P

I like your idea about just putting some scales around the crux terminatus, simple, yet effective.
