New Codex SM Units

Well, with a nice shiny copy of codex SM in front of me for much of today, here are some thoughts about what the new codex opens up for us:

1) Drop pods are not massively upped in price (a combi-flamer more than they were) but have BS4. And can still have a deathwind launcher; deliberations needed.....

2) The weapons options for scouts from codex SM (which only 1 of our units can take) allow them to take: a sniper rifle FOR FREE, camo-cloaks for very few points. Also, the 'Sergeant' can take a combi-weapon or PF or PW.

3) The Landspeeder storm thingy is looking pretty ace as well, with the ability to carry 5 scouts, although it is NOT a dedicated transport but a fast-attack choice. So we can DEFINITELY take it. Nice!

4) Vanilla dreads rock. They are marginally more expensive, but you can have an autocannon on both arms or just the lefty instead of a PF or ML, plus the full weapon load-out list as seen in our codex. Neat.

5) Storm shields rock as predicted.

6) Ironclad dreads.... for any SW looking for a boost to a DP army, these are amazing. They start off with the basic furioso weapons combo, but then can get a hurricane bolter and heavy flamer as a part of their upgrade set. And they come with extra armour, SL and Search-light. Ace.

I need to lie down, feel free to ask any board-allowed questions and I will answer you honestly!

Yea some great stuff in the SM dex.

With the already predicted amazing storm shields, a lot of my guys have been getting GS shields. It's a great way to get in a cheap mandatory HQ without sacrificing survivability.

I'm more interested in the Vindicator, Rhino and Razorback. As some have stated, they'll be usingn the Rhino and Razorback points as listed in the new C:SM, which I most likely will to if no one calls me on it. ;)

Excited about the plasma gun las cannon combo on the razorback too, helps to get more anti-tank in our lists.

BS 4 pods were a nice surprise and the locator beacon seems like it'd be a nice tactical piece for helping to make that all power "wall" ^_^

The Ironclad is really growing on me as a real viable drop pod terminator, AV 13, a seismic hammer with built in melta (poppin' tanks) and I'd most likely kit mine out with either the hurricane bolters in the other arm or the ironclad assault launchers. Possibly 2 hunter killer missiles as well... but I'm still playing around with the possibilities in my head. ^_^

Definitely some things to look forward to, it'll keep us busy for another year...

You know what kinda irks me... the fact that my 3rd ed models would be legit again, yet I either modified them or totally messed them up to convert to 4th.

I think I destroyed my old Plasma/Lascannon razorback turrent (old style), which I have a feeling I am going to kick myself about.

*grumble*

The best part is that the FAQ says we have access to all variants of Land Raiders, Razorbacks, Land Speeders, and Dreadnoughts (except venerables)

In other words, we're getting Land Raiders of all kinds, especially the tasty new Redeemer. That + blood claws + attached IC = doom. On fire.

As you have a copy of the C:SMs and without giving too much away copyright wise, can I ask if Rhinos and razorbacks are cheaper or do we still use the points as listed in C:SW?? And how are the costs in regards to the other tanks like the whirlwind, predator etc??

I'm not looking for exact points but an idea if they are the same, more exspensive or cheaper would be great

Rhinos and razorbacks are cheaper, drop pods slightly more expensive. The nice thing is predators are really cheap now. ^_^

In case you were wondering, the Redeemer only carries 12, so a large squad of BC's with an IC that we're used to will have to be taken in a Crusader. Unless you want to field a smaller BC squad. ;)

Oh, and whirlwind is exactly the same points as before, and instead of laying mines, the 2nd weapon does something to the effect of ignoring cover saves.

As for if we can use the rhinos and razorbacks, I think I'll use them from C:SM instead of C:SW's and I'm sure others will agree.

The Rhinos have the exact same price as those in the Dark Angel or the Chaos Space Marine codeci. The Drop Pod is the same price as the new Rhinos. Razorbacks with twin HB are just a little bit more expensive. Predators are cheaper by approx 1/3, WWs are the same price iirc.

lucky for us the Redeemer, or just the bog standard LR too has 12 seats, so you can have 11 BCs for the 3rd PW/PF and still give them a WGL or an IC :)

I just feel good about the new SM codex for the SW :)

Razorbacks with twin HB are 30 whole points cheaper than before with twin HB, don't know where you got more expensive? :)

Also the standard Predator destructor (without sponsons just straight up like the base cost for both) with the same vehicle upgrades, you're looking at a 58% decrease in points exactly! :)

Had a look at it to

Things that hit me

We dont get the cheap Rino but we do get the smoke and search, we do however still have the cheap extra armour option making the rino only 5 points more expensive than the marine version

We dont get the cheap razor back or the weapon upgrades

Our only real anti tank tank will be ALOT more expensive, Havend done the math but it might be better to get longfangs for the time being.

The dread comes with a MM as basic setup and you have to get the assault cannon as upgrade

So How do you guys seeing yourself using some of these new tools aside from the new cheaper transports?

Will anyone drop their ven dred for the ironclad?

will you no longer OBEL and instead use the landspeeder storm? I can see myself using this for a 2nd squad as because its an open topped transport we'd be able to assault out of it.

Who's going to be modding their HQ's to have storm shields? Mine already did so this is all good news for me.

Sure for marines

Not for SW's

If you look at our dex it says GH's can take a rino for X amount of points and a razor for Y amount of points

My rino's will get 5 ponts more expensive, but will get a search light in with the deal

as of creating a codex space wolves chapter..odd i know, but by jove the amounts of stuff you can create. ive even been told that as long as i don't use them in tournies i can have wolf scouts as troop! wicked! also all the plethora of things sm have and sw. does anyone have any idea for a name...

I throw my vote into the hat for "Viking Smurfs" :o

Well, actually, I think that I will be using the Codex:SM entries for Razorbacks and Rhino's.

The problem that I have is that it lists the costs 'in the transport entry', whilst our upgrades for things such as extra armour come with the points from the 'Space Marine Armoury'.

The Space marine army has extra armour at 3 times the price it is in our codex (I'm looking at the Venerable Dreadnought entry here).

So what do we take - the expensive transports, or the expensive vehicle upgrades (ignoring our armoury?).

Any thoughts?

The FAQ clearly doesn't list Rhinos and Razorbacks, so we use the vehicle upgrades found in our own codex for the rhinos and razorbacks.

So expensive transports and cheap upgrades is what the SW's will have to do for rhinos and razorbacks.

I'm going to use the points for stuff in my dex

So expensive Transports but cheap upgrades

I am however using the SM weapon stats. This is in my eyes one of the biggest nonsense that GW has ever sayd, "They go there own way thats why the guns differ"

I can get so mad about this kind of stuff, one line in the FAQ of every SM chapter would fix this and sell more SM dexes.

I heared we get none of the stuff from the codex. Which figures. We wait and wait and wait some more and they come out with 2 Space marine Codex and we are still using a 3rd edition codex in 5th. And they do not want to bother with a FAQ to fix it our a small artical in White (you pay for our advertising) Dwarf.

In our group we have been talking it over and we all aggreed to leave the troop choices for the SpaceWolves the same and use the HQ choices and vehichles from the new codex. Just to keep them balanced. otherwise Wolves would lose every fight.

After reading the previous posts, my take on things is this

If things are listed with points costs and options in our codex (rhinos, razorbacks) and have not been mentioned in any faq then that must be the price we pay, so high cost and cheap options will be my way forward on these

If there are new vehicle types/variants that are available that an faq has given us permission to use then we can. If there are new entries which haven't been mentioned/granted in an faq yet then I don't feel we should. So for the time being I won't be taking Ironclad Dreads etc

Where our codex says "see codex space marines" for any particular entry like whirlwinds then thats what we should do, other wise options etc are as in C:SW. So for me it will be C:SM for most tank/droppod options that we can take and C:SW for Ven Dreads

This may seem odd to some but my feeling is when the new C:SM comes out there will be a new faq. If not then I will play with what I have. The same thing sort of happened with the Crusader. We got it in the end

In my opinion we still have some of the toughest troops around with more options than most. Our HQs are unique and we still get obel scouts. I don't mind playing with with an old codex until things are dealt with but I don't want to spend half a game arguing the toss with my opponant about wether this or that choice is allowed or not at this price or that

I don't want to play grey coloured smurfs, I want to play Space Wolves, with whatever short comings there may be

Why not take a Ironclad, the FAQ states we can take a dread out of the SM dex and that we can take all different variants except a venerable

We cant take the ven SM dread
