40kChrista
hey guys, the title pretty much says it all, what do you guys use for your heavy support slots? i have used a Defiler, and a Vindi with possession, and Olits. so far all have been lack luster. maybe it's just bad dice rolls... idk. any tips or advice is appreciated, and thanks in advance. Corrupted
Take any one of those three and use a crap ton of them. 2+ Defilers, 2+ Possessed Vindys, 6+ Oblits. Megalodon
I run 4 Oblits and a Dakka Pred. In Large points games I swap out the Pred for a Defiler and up the Oblits six. benno_wallace
I play Iron Warriors (and I will not be using the new loyalist codex when it comes out.. stupid idea) and play against mainly other marine armies. I like to run a vindicator, a defiler with heavy bolters and a havoc launcher and two obliteraors Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/147000-what-heavy-support-do-you-use/#findComment-1705068 Share on other sites
chillin
In my experience oblits are always good, I've never had too much luck with vindi's, defilers are either dead by turn 2 or are the MVP of the game (defilers best taken in 2's). Two of my fav and most reliable HS choices are 8 man havoc squad w 3 HB's, 1 AC, IoCG and the dakka pred. Zeller
Havocs mounted in Rhino APC. At the moment I have models for only one squad and they are armed with HB. Really, Havocs are fantastic considering they are just as flexible as standard troop squads with the exception of being able to carry 4 special weapons which allows them to carry significant mobile fire power to keep up with your regular guys should they need CC support. 40kChrista
thanks guys with the load out i have, i have about 300 pts. for Heavy Support. so far that has consisted of 1 Defiler and 2 oblits or 1 Vindi and 2 oblits. i'm trying to keep it more in line with Word Bearers, so more demon machines, etc... but this certainly helps. Sons of Horus
i use lots of defilers and oblits (everyone loves oblits ) since you're gonna play word bearers don't field a lot of heavy support just a few oblits and 1 defiler or vindicator. 40kChrista
since you're gonna play word bearers don't field a lot of heavy support just a few oblits and 1 defiler or vindicator. ummm, that is what i'm using now. more than anything i'm trying to get a feel for what people use beyond Defilers, Vindicators, and Oblits. to see if anything jumps out at me that i may have missed or didn't consider before. i have to say the Havoc/Pred combo is intriguing, i use my Rhinos as mobile walls anyways so another couldn't hurt. Kalrik
I've found a love of the Daemonic possessed Land raider recently. They act as rhinos turn one for my troops, to get into assault, then they're dead hard tanks for the rest of the game... Though is costly. if you have a clearly defined role for them, they're great! Zealot Of Chaos
personally I like Obliterators and Defilers, they are good all round heavy support and can deal with pretty much anything thrown at them, especially obliterators who can deep strike then plasma away heh heh heh Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/147000-what-heavy-support-do-you-use/#findComment-1705673 Share on other sites
Penmarch'
Never had any luck with my defilers. They get shot to pieces each and every time before they are able to inflict any serious damage. Obliterators on the other hand seems to be my thing. Not too long a ago a single (remaining) Obliterator managed to kill a whopping 600+ points of SM's. Combined with a Lash sorcerer, my Vindicators have done extremely well also. Havocs are a safe bet and seem to be largely ignored if fielded with another more obvious heavy support thingie. Until those four autocannon - oh, how I miss Tank Hunter skills- start mowing down the enemy troops. I have different loadouts for my Havocs, depending on the enemy, but always 4 exactly the same weapons. Autocannnos- Lascannons- Heavy Bolters or Missile Launchers. Chosen can be used as a 'heavy slot' substitute when armed with five plasma guns. If you dare, the results can be quite devastating even on turn one. Ju'kosian
with extra armour you can still move but not shoot (stunned/shaken), Daemonic possession ignores the two. (and indeed has some influence on the accuracy) I use 4 oblits as heavy (1.5k), or 2 vindi's with Daemonic possession Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/147000-what-heavy-support-do-you-use/#findComment-1706036 Share on other sites

Gideon Bane
Under 5th edition possessing Vindicators has a lot less effect on their accuracy than it did in forth, assuming I ran my probabilities right. Brother Nicolas
Friend runs Oblits and only Oblits every time he runs anything else it fails. Oblits are just to flexible, he has won so many games becuase of this flex. Drudge Dreadnought
I've tried everything except vindicators. Havocs i just find are too costly for what they can do. Dakka predator is better than heavy bolter/autocannon havocs, orblits better than lascannon ones. Honestly i've never liked oblits much. In 5th the best way to kill armor is meltas and close combat. Sure oblits have meltas and all, but they are a lot of points for a unit that doesn't have an armor value to protect it. I'd rather just have meltas on a marine squad or just whack stuff with a power fist if i'm going to get that close. My favorite is dual close combat weapon defilers. 6 str 10 power weapon attacks on the charge, and a battlecannon. And i have tons of rhinos to give him constant cover. And yeah, somtimes they use all their AT on him and he goes down soon. But that means they didn't put a stop to the rhinos, landraider, and somtimes even dreadnoughts. Want to kill the defiler? Thats fine, it means my berzerkers get into melee safely. Want to kill the rhinos? Thats fine. 6 str 10 power weapon attacks works just as well for me. But then again my 2k list has 4 rhinos, a landraider, 2 dreads and the defiler. If you arn't running heavy mech you may be better off with another option. 40kChrista
thanks for the tips Drudge so far i'm running a 1750 standard tourny list, the idea being to take it to GD Chicago next year. that being said, i wonder if the Land Raider is viable option? i got a game going this sunday, and i'm going to borrow my kids preds, so i'll have one dakka and one las. going to see if running the melta squad close to the las pred and the plasma squad next to the dakka pred works any better than what i have been running. i'll let you guys know how it goes!! 40kChrista
ok well the Predators were a success. they split my opponents attention really well, they felt right, and seemed to fit the army well. i'd like to thank everyone for their input, it was a lot to think about for this aspect of my army and the input here helped make a decision i was having trouble with. thanks guys ;) Grim ...and sorry for the double post!! :( Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/147000-what-heavy-support-do-you-use/#findComment-1709425 Share on other sites
minigun762
I'm curious to hear how the army is handling itself these days, after you made the changes to the Heavy Slots. Those Predators still working as well as there were at the start? 40kChrista
I'm curious to hear how the army is handling itself these days, after you made the changes to the Heavy Slots. Those Predators still working as well as there were at the start? unfortunately no, as in i haven't really had a chance to play them since that game... real life has reared it's ugly head from the warp once again. but my buddy has retooled his list, last game the only thing of his on the board was an Oblit and his Sorc., so he's ready for a rematch... i'll let you know how it goes when i get a chance to play him again. Grim and if anyone was curious, here's the list i'm running at the moment... Lord- termie armor, combi-plas, demon weapon, icon (attached to the Termie squad) Lord-MoS, Wings, demon weapon Greater Demon 10 Chaos Space Marines - 2 plasma guns, IoCG, rhino, champ /w PF 10 Chaos Space Marines - 2 meltas, IoCG, rhino, champ w/ PF 8 Lesser Demons 8 Lesser Demons 8 Lesser Demons 5 Terminators - 4 combi-plas, heavy flamer, 2 chainfists Dakka Pred Las Pred /w extra armor 13 kill points, 54 models (50 slogging, 4 tanks), 5 Troops so far this list has been a blast to play... Greater Demon and the Blissgiver tear units up, deepstriking 10 rapid fire plasma shots can ruin anyones day and the Lesser Demons have proven themselves time and again... Sheff
I'm playing a game tonight, 1500 points vs a crisis suit Tau army. I'm thinking of running three obliterators and two havoc squads, 2 lascannons, two missile launchers and four heavy bolters, does that sound a bit too much?
