54mm Scale Marine

Pig Of Sparta

Recommended Posts

So i was going through some of my boxes of minis and came across my mediocre-ly painted Artemis from Inquisitor, and thought i might paint strip him and give him a better paint job. Then i read the Ultramarines omnibus and decided i wanted to make him a regular space marine, because i no longer hate Ultramarines. This could take a while....

In the mean time here's a couple of pics showing what i've started to do

I removed the deathwatch detailing from this shoulder guard:

This one's just a front view, i repositioned his waist cause i didn't think that i looked right assembled using the locator plug. Eventually, when i get hold of one he'll have a helmeted head.

One thing that's always bothered me to no end with marines is their legs. They are so skinny I'm afraid that they might snap. While of course they are just models I don't see why they ahve to be that skinny.

However, having said that I still think the model is looking good.

I know what you mean about the legs, that being said, i think the 54mm minis are much better scaled than the regular ones. I was going to have a go at true scaling but decided to try this instead.

I like what you've done with the left shoulder pad, it looks nice and neat. Will you be using that area for sculpting and what chapter will he be from?

Thanks, i was really unsure when i was doing that but thought it came out quite well. i'm gonna paint him as an Ultramarine i think, so i was gonna leave the are clear for insignia/icons etc.

So far i've not done much more this week, but here's what i've done so far:

the new hilt on the marine's sword, I'm thinking about lengthening the blade as well

I'm excited to see this progress. I would, however, like to note that the new hilt on your sword looks, well, backwards. Shouldn't the flat part be facing the blade? I'd keep the blade short. I like the description of the "combat blades" in the Horus Heresy series being shorter than duelers' weapons.

I pit the hilt that way cause i thought i looked better and figured that in combat it could be used to slide enemy blades away in a sort of half parry. But on reflection it does look a little strange, though i took the inspiration from the company champion's swort hilt.

First layers of paint are going on now, i decided not to reposition the arms in the end.

Thanks Ferrus. To be honest it's kinda time consuming and you've got to be kinda ruthless with it, i used clippers to remove parts of the deathwatch icon. Also getting into the corners can be a little tricky, but if you've got the patience to do it i think it's worth it.
