Apocalypse Lords - A tale of two dreads...

Sooo...I've been working on Dreads #4 and #5 in conjunction with conceptualizing a Master of the Forge. This exercise is intended to demonstrate two sides of a coin.

First off, I built one dread straight out of the AoBR box even though I was getting twitchy at not modifying anything. He went together pretty well with a minimum of clean up for mold lines and was ready to go in around 60 minutes, give or take.

I don't have a name for him yet, so #4 wil have to suffice. One of the things I noticed about the feet is that they have a slight inward cant that became a little annoying with #5, but was solved primarily through the use of some putty.

Anyway, on to #4

As soon as the putty is dry I will basecoat him and we'll be off to the races.

#5 ended being a completely different animal. He started off with the same base material (i.e. AoBR dread) but, I really wanted a dread with two twin-linked autocannons. I had some left over arms from my other dreads, so between them and some autocannon bits, I cobbled together this...

...so he's different. In thinking about what I wanted him to look like, I didn't want an overtly "Battletech" kind of look, so I opted for snub-nosed autocannons. I want him to look blunt and deadly. I don't know if I pulled that off, but at least I don't have to worry too much about the long autocannons sticking out. So he is somewhat condensed as opposed to being visually stretched out because of the barrels. Also of note is the asymmetrical placement of the ammo drums. I didn't do that on purpose, I just used the guns as they are molded...and don't ask me who runs out to him after he's used up all his ammon and gives him a reload, I haven't a clue.

Also note that the arms are only loosely applied for the pics and will be applied permanently after painting is complete.

I wanted him on some sort of heroic looking base and settled for a large pile of bones. As part of the final stages of finishing, a layer of sand will be applied over the putty and some of the bones to strengthen the effect.

The other slightly annoying issue that I wasn't able to solve without undertaking considerably more conversion effort that I had intended, is the fact that you can not rotate the torso left or right. Due to the way that they are molded, face on is about all you can accomplish without some very serious and clever plastic work. I didn't have the time to explore that, so #5 is face on.

If he was going to be a diorama, I would call him, "On the bones of martyrs". His line of fire is slightly elevated because in my Apoc games he will be providing some AA support. To reinforce this role, I've added the radar antennae on top of the sarcophogus.

Both will be painted in the half white/black scheme of my army and very hopefully before the middle of November as that is when they will be needed for battle.

So that's dread's Number 4 & 5. For Number 6, I'd really like to get the FW Chaplain dread to represent one of my chapter's leaders (i.e. Benkei, for those of you keeping track) into near immortality.

Anyway, they were both interesting to work on and I look forward to getting some paint on them <hah! beat you all to it!> and then seeing what kind of mayhem they can cause on the table. I envision Bones standing back and blowing bits off of all kinds of stuff, while #4 closes in and applies multple punches to the solar plexus.

C&C greatly appreciated, especially on "Bones" as I don't quite know what to think about him yet.

Cheers,

what bits did you use for them? Mind if i borrow the idea?

Please do borrow away. I believe our armies all end up looking better because of all the cross pollination that occurs on the BnC boards.

The parts I used are the IG heavy weapon autocannons. I cut off the long barrel section as well as the muzzle brake, and then glued the MB back onto the "snubbed" gun assembly. It's a pretty straight forward modification, just a little fiddly when you put the brakes back on.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

#5 Looks awesome, I think you pulled off the Auto Cannons pretty well. I also noticed you have used the Sword from the Black Templars Spure to adorn the sarcophogus, an idea which i have used myself on one of my dreads, Another thing i did was the remove the hand and handle from the back of a terminator Stormshield and have mounted that on the middle of the hips. This was done as a way to show the entombed marines heritage, his favoured weapons before being enshrined inside the dread. Awesome work

"Ah Louie, lou-eye.." <sorry, got carried away with one of the greatest songs ever recorded -_- >

That sounds very interesting. Do you have a picture you could share showing this? It's a great idea.

Good work on the AA dread, and they should both look smashing in your split scheme. I heartily agree with you about the fact that you can't rotate the sarcophagi. I must have stared at my second AoBR dread for an hour trying to figure out if it was possible...

I really like the big red "X" in the middle of the icon, but it seems to have gotten in the way of the photo? :D

Would you like to try again?

Excellent work on both... your Dread formation is going to be fantastic when finished. I personally am going to steal the cut-sprue brick wall effect on the base of the second model... that's a very clever and simple idea.
