First attempt of NMM - Abaddon the Despoiler

Hi All,

I've decided to give the non metallic metal style a whirl as a break from painting my recent Terminators. I really liked how the GW washes dull the shine of metallic paint but thought that NMM would be a good experiment on blending and washes. I've taken a few shots of Abaddon so far and would like some criticism on how it looks. If I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely I'll go back to using the GW metallics and washes - but I'd like your comments to see if getting somewhere with this (photos are at the end of the thread).

I'm using a limited palette - Chaos Black, Snakebite Leather and Skull White to produce the effect and the light source would be directly over Abaddon's head.

Thanks for the kind comments so far. I've got a little bit more done today on Abaddon - I re-did parts of the shoulder trim as it didn't look quite right and I've started work on the lower legs. I've also tried a steel effect on part of the chest wires too.

Here's a slight update on the NMM (apologies for the blurry pictures). I've added Abaddon's head, painted most of the skulls on the armour and have started to work down the legs with the NMM. What do you think so far?

the problem with the nmm is you've essentially edge highlight a dark yellow with a brighter yellow

metallics have reflection points, and so you need to create levels of highlights/shadow, to show the varying levels of reflection

brightest go next to darkest, this high contrast helps create the idea of reflection

also just because its an edge doesnt mean its brighter, if its not receiving the light directly, it will not be as bright

try to avoid simply edge highlights as it will not appear to be NMM

Starks; thanks very much for the advice - that's just what I was looking for. It's tricky trying to follow a NMM tutorial when it's based on a different figure. I can see your point on the edge highlighting and I'll take a look at the figure again to see whether parts should be highlighted or not.

The Chaplain; the purple is very simple - I used Homagaunt Purple as a base, then Liche Purple, shade with Leviathan Purple wash and then highlight with a mix of Liche and Warlock Purple.

Hi All,

Here's an update on Abaddon. I've pretty much finished the gold detail on the body, sword and arm and I'm attempting the steel effect on the twin bolter using black and white.

Don't take my word for it, but others I've seen said they incorporated blue hues into their silver/steel NMM, maybe give that a go? Otherwise it still looks good, maybe a little more drastic on the highlights for the silver but I'm still a novice on that myself.

The gold looks killer though. :HQ:

King Tiger, thanks for your comments. It's interesting that the paintwork appears more like bone. I know that some people use Snakebite Leather in their blends for skulls which might be why the armour trim appears that way. Do you have any suggestions to make the armour look better?

I'm not sure if I'd use NMM for large areas and this figure was mostly for an experiment but the technique in my opinion would look great for certain power weapons, but each to his own.

Thanks for your comments King Tiger and Captain Mick. I've read a few comments from people on different forums who like the look albeit it isn't a good representation of NMM gold - but I think I'll stick to the yellowed bone description as it fits nicely.
