Scythes of the Emperor Test Marine

Alpha PTP

Recommended Posts

The new Codex that came out ruined my All Hallows Guard. I have four boxes of Tactical Marines sitting around, and I always loved the Scythes of the Emperor fluff and colors. I decided to take a new take on the Scythe's, though. I got my inspiration from The Scythes. Sadly, the guy hasn't updated his army in a year, but I still think the army is wonderful.

I tried the glowing eyes effect on the helmet, but I hate how it turned out. I am probably going to redo the eyes. I am going for an above table-top army, so keep that in mind, please.

Good, But not as good as the guy at my Local GW's SOTEmp.

He's yellow's are godly.

Nice blue on the eyes.

I'd love to see pictures. I just repainted the face so it doesn't look like crap. Photos tend to make models look like crap. These pictures make him look horrible, for some reason. .__.

Just a few ideas:

1. The black is obviously not developed and still wip but one thing I've noticed with my own minis is that black and brown tends to clash a bit. You might want to consider doing a black contrast detail on the yellow for uniformity.

2. I personally am not a fan of glowing eyes on SM's because this simply wouldn't be the case. You might want to experiment with the helmet and do a yellow face plate with a black helm and yellow details. If you did a glow effect it wouldn't be such a contrast on the black.

3. IMHO the bolter needs to get yellow on it. Thats my preference but the black on the mini seems to be a little to dominant IMHO. Or maybe on the back pack to blend it through more. Below is a link to one that I'm thiking of.

Otherwise the paint job so far is clean and good looking. ;)

personally, i like the golden yellow, i think it looks great. I personally always found the traditional yellow of the imperial fists to be a bit gaudy. I think this has a much richer, warmer tone to it, and doesn't stick out like the I. Fists do.

I think the yellow's fine, personally. The painting looks above tabletop based on my experiences, so I think you're on track there.

I'm personally not that big on changing established colour schemes, but your call obviously. It looks nice in the end ;)

Agreed. I thought it was enough, but looking back on it, it needs a lot more. The black is being dominated by the yellow, making it look unfinished. I'll fix it on the next miniature. I have another four marines ready for painting. I am waiting to see what can be fixed.

Already taken care of. I got rid of the glowing. It looked horrible, and it gave the face this greenish tint. I didn't want to do the faceplate and "mowhawk" yellow. That is how I did my All Hallows Guard, but it was Orange. I am probably going to end up doing it anyway. The yellow on the helmet drowns out the face. It makes the eyes impossible to see.

++Edit.++

I am actually going to drop the yellow on the head entirely, and put yellow on the backpack. I might do heraldry on their helms. Different things for different squads, ect. I also might change the lenses to green instead of blue.

I really hate putting colors on weapons. I think it looks tacky, in my opinion. My fear of putting yellow on the backpack is that it would take even more away from the model. I think I am going to experiment and see what the results are.

Thanks.

++Edit.++

@Draakur : The original scheme for the SotE was horrid. The just yellow torso thing bothered me. Thanks, mate.

Nice blue on the eyes.

im sorry all, but dude alpha is looking for constructive comments not the # of people that can paint better than him or her. i don't mean to be blunt, but comments like these are why i don't do much on sights like this.

anyways, your wip is looking great. yellow is a very hard color to pull off and you did it very clean. now i am one of those people that don't do the glowing think but you pulled that off to. i would like to see the finish product and again sorry for the lash out.

oh and i would also like to see some of those godly yellow paint jobs. this is mine

i also was inspired by The Scythes army

and remember all it is not easy to paint a beautiful model then take a pic of it. usually the pic does not do the fig justice. rule of thumb is to figure that the model looks twice as good in real life than a pic

and that the lecture of the day

I didn't want to say anything to the guy about how his friend is apparently better than me. It was a rude comment, but we let these things pass on the Bolter and Chainsword. I am no mod, but I'm sure you understand what I'm saying.

Thank you, and yellow is a fairly easy color to paint. Black is my trouble. Black is a color that does not exist, if you think about it. Yellow, Orange, Blue, and Red are my strong colors.

i think black with blue highlights are good for clothes and piping and grays for armour. now a blue highlight might look good on your amour because of your eyes. not sure though they might be a contrast. try this. highlight your black the same way you do your yellows or reds but go back after your done with black ink were the armour should look the darkest.

Oh lay off it.

Did I say I could do a an Amazing yellow that can cure at least four types of cancer

No

Did I say that you're work was bad, or needed a complete retooling, or Insulted your skill

No

Did I say that takes him no time at all to make a better mini, thus making him the better painter.

No, It took 17 layers to just get the kneepads on a unit right, thus causing his army to grow slowly, but steadly over time. And that's for the basic No Nothings, not his LR. Who Knows that layer count.

Did Icomplement you on the eye coloring, even if I also am not a fan, but can tell it took some time and was hard work. Did I even say you mini was good. yet not as good as someone else's I've seen.

Yes.

Do I own a working Camera, and/or able to contact him on a whim to get group pictures of his army?

No, but that's another story.

Look I'm not going to lie to you and say "Doode best Yellow Ive Seen All YEAR!!!!111" No I'm not going to BS you like that. It's good, I stated that. It could be the picture, but I just like other guy's better. We are not best buddies. I REPEAT I REALLY DON'T EVEN KNOW THE GUY. English guy, great player. Also as far as constructive comments goes, what do you want me to say. Do a better yellow? No. I'm not going to do that. You painted a fine looking model. You should feel proud of it. You shouldn't be belittled just 'cause some guy on the internet says he like the other guy's better.

You painted a good model. The guy I know paints the same color scheme. I just like his better.

You are on very thin ice, mate. Your remark came across the wrong way, so don't get your feathers ruffled at me. I'm proud of him that he spent the time to do 16 layers. I'm sure I could accomplish a similar effect with three or four with glazing. I am not trying to up him/you, I am just saying there are more effective ways to highlight a model, nothing more.

All I am saying is that your comment came across as a tad... snobbish? That isn't the right word, but I hope you understand what I am saying. I'm not asking for false compliments. You just said that some other guy was better, and I'd love to know how, but instead to get flustered at me. Please don't come into my thread with your sarcastic remarks. They are offensive and immature.

Just... watch what you say. Mods are not forgiving.

Heh, Ruffled feathers

I play Raven Guard

Heh, ez funny

I'm just saying IT'S GOOD not THE BEST. That's it. I really don't know his trick. All I know it that I asked him what his army list was setup and how he got his yellow so Pure. Your yellow looks like...well yellow. His is a highlighter type yellow but it doesn't overkill anything. His black it nicely highlighted. Not so that it looks like a black blob with grey lines all over it, but a very highlight that picks out the edges.

Otherwise I'm done with this thread. I rather not envoke the wrath of the mods, just because you and I have different tastes of SotEmp.

Best of luck with the new army.

nice job Alpha, i'm not a huge fan of that colour scheme and prefer the original( and the chapter symbol) but each to their own, the orange looking yellow is fine and exactly how my own scythes look. i've be using a pot of orange ink that i've had for about 17 years( the first GW pots are the best and god only knows how some of my paints have lasted that long heh) and build up my yellow highlights from there.

i'll post some pics once i finish my lightbox if you interested

hey alpha. i didn't mean to cause such a seen. but i think you agreed with me and i like to stick up for my fellow painters. i know we all work hard and it take guts to post them. i think once you get that black highlighted he will look sweeeet. have you tryed to use black to line the yellow. you might want to try that on another fig. it would keep with your black armour. but you would have to try it because i did mine the same way you did your yellow. i just think it might make your yellow and black armour stand out more but in the same aspect bring the two together. oh, what color are your guns going to be?
