Modelling: Sculpting Eyes onto Armor

This is an extremely simple tutorial to sculpt eyes onto armor, or any other surface for that matter. This sort of came out the blue while working on a model repose, and it’s a very simple concept, but I think it looks pretty nice.

Applications:

This is the most useful for armor mutations, or just chaos in general. There are probably more uses though.

Needed Items:

Sculpting tool of choice (I actually use my thumb for all of it except step nine, as I find that I can produce much more natural curves that way)

Greenstuff

Surface

Instructions: (a rough example)

Step one:

Mix a small amount of greenstuff

Step Two:

Form a ball roughly the size you want the actual "eyeball” to be

Step Three:

Press this lightly into position at the desired location of the eye. Like so: http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x274/drdonuts/warhammer40k/chaos/eye%20tut/stuff006.jpg

Step Four:

Make sure that the ball still retains its ball-like shape (ie, it’s not squashed), gently shape it with the sculpting tool of choice if it is in any way unsatisfactory. It takes a few tries to figure out what you like though.

Step Five:

Allow to cure completely or at least a few hours

Step Six:

Mix some more greenstuff and form two small sausages (these will be the lids)

Step Seven:

Put one where you want the top lid to be and the other where you want the bottom lid to be. Like so: http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x274/drdonuts/warhammer40k/chaos/eye%20tut/stuff007.jpg

Step Eight:

Use your sculpting tool to blend the sausages into the armor and create the shape of the eye. Like so: http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x274/drdonuts/warhammer40k/chaos/eye%20tut/stuff008.jpg

Step Nine:

If desired, use your sculpting tool to create wrinkles around the eye. Like so: http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x274/drdonuts/warhammer40k/chaos/eye%20tut/stuff009.jpg

As far as painting goes, I haven’t painted one yet, as I just came up with this. If I find a suitable manner to paint them so they don’t have that sort of “stuck on” feel of most novice plague-marine conversions. Suggestions are most welcome, and please post comments, attempts, ideas, etc.

Hey, that's pretty much the same method, albeit more skillfully executed in your case, I used for this guy:
