Red Dragons DIY C&C

Hello, I'm looking for lots of help making my boys look more Imperial bombastic (fantastic!!) and especially more "crusdey". I did stop this DIY chapter project a long time ago as it was lacking in these areas but I adore the colour scheme so I would really like some help making it work!

Anyway, I should explain the origin of this project, they're called the Red Dragons, and I started it over 3 years ago being inspired by Japanese culture, so i stole katanas off LOTR elves and stuck them on, cut a few arms to make more dynamic poses etc etc. I even had Sashimono (banners) for each Marine but that made the problem worse, I'll get some pics of them up later anyway. But the Japanese theme didn't gel with "Imperial-yness". So I toned down the Japanese element and just get some cool looking Marines with a slight Japanese flavour still. All your help is appreciated! Here they are anyway.

I understand the pictures aren't great and I will get better quality ones done in the daylight tomorrow. All C&C welcome.

Crusadey for me means a long campaign. So chances are they would have little time for repair and such. Battle damage would make them stand out as a chapter that is in the midst of a crusade, without the time or resources to buff out the dents and scratches on their armour. Second trophys. Fighting the same enemy on a campaign would mean you end up collecting plenty of trophies of a common enemy. This would also tie your marines together. If you don't want to use trophies, which is understandable, they're not to everybodies taste (I'm not too keen on them myself :P), then how about using a common basing theme (using bits from the same enemy race to decorate your bases. Doesn't have to be a huge amount, discarded weapons, bits of scrap, etc.)? Finally crusade markings. Paint marking onto different marines, with each one representing a crusade or campaign. Not all of them would have the same markings so mix and match. It could be a symbol on the knee pad or a stripe on the helmet.

Good luck. :)

Yes you're right, battle damage sounds like a good idea. And I certainly think honour markings will help tie the Chapter back into the Imperium a bit more. I think I'll have to make the battle damage before I paint them next time though!

Purity seals look like a good way to go too, I've been looking around at ways of making them using green stuff and adorning them with a decent amount of them should help a bit.

Does anyone have any ideas as far as banners go? I'd love to get some banners on the sergeants and try to combine the two themes, without betraying either of them. Also any linkys to battle damaged marine examples would be great.

Ta :)

Oh noes! Red Dragons and Scarlet Wyrms (My DIY Chapter, or it would be if I had any models/ paints to do them with :))!

To make them more 'crusadey' and 'Imperial'?

Perhaps an inking or two would make them a little more GRIMDARK, but i'm not sure if you want to mess with your current paintjob.

An interesting point, one I hadn't thought of. They do look exceptionally bright on those pictures, but it wouldn't hurt to deepen the shade a little, can you recomend a wash? I don't want them to go all shiny!

Another point along that trail of thought is mud. MUDDY MUDDY MUD MUD!!! If they're on crusade/campaign, they're going to get a little down and dirty, so some testers of spatters on the lower legs are in order. I'll try some different Marines before I do it on these guys, they might not be amazing but they took me a long time and I love 'em! :P

Thanks again :)

Ok so I've had a fiddle with my dreadnought (eeeewwww!! ;) ) and I've made a start at adding crusade details like chequered areas and purity seals. Also started adding dirt to the Marines. I've started with an old Salamander model to practice on, and the bestial brown came out really well, but it isn't so visible on top of Red Gore, so I might try a lighter brown with a finer drybrush. Any tips on that would be most appreciated ;)

The Dread's arm. Had a go at chequers but they're a bit... rough. I'm sure I'll get better with practice! Also, a couple of purity seals.

The prototype Salamander. The bestial brown shows up quite well, although I'm not sure that comes across in the picture... about time I got a new camera really!

Mud on the Marines. I've given almost the entire model a drybrush of bestail brown, which has given an overall much more "gritty" effect than before. I concentrated on the legs for obvious reasons.

I like the color scheme. The mud & dry brushing of brown helps give a more crusade like feel to them. I agree with the others, maybe some battle damage on your next batch of marines would be good. You could even do it on this batch w/out ruining the paint job. I've seen tutorials on painting on battle damage. There is someone who has an incredible Lamenters Army (Can't remember the name, can someone help out?) were he has painted on all the battle damage & it looks amazing. You don't necessarily have to drill holes & cut into your models. Also, I had an idea for you for your campaign badges, you said you wanted to try to blend the Imperial feel of SM with Japanese culture, why not paint some symbols in Kanji? I'm sure you find some sites that would give you words & their Kanji equivalent.
