Origin of Nightmares Renegade Warband

Recommended Posts

Here are some pics of my mostly finished DIY CSM warband, Origin of Nightmares. The Warband is Chaos Undivided, but mostly worships Slaanesh and Tzeentch.

Next up WIP is a Chaos Predator and a Chaos Land Raider.

I like them alot :) Clean crisp painting style.

Only somewhat negative comment would be that they look "grainy", but i think thats the work of the undercoat spray?

Also, are you gonna do anything more to the bases regarding colours?

Wow! What an amazing theme, and awesome "chicklet" Rhino armor. Good job representing everything on your miniatures, and adding the robe to the sorcerer to distinguish him from the lord.

I would love to play against this balanced army.

ps- KUDOS on taking the Tzeentch icon in a troops choice. IT WORKS, people! Charge them into a 5 man imperial terminator squad and see who wins, or an enemy demon prince.

Thanks for the kind comments.

The grainy look is a combination of 2 things: My lack of photo skill with my girlfriend's digital camera and a very uncooperative sun. I try to take pics outdoors, when possible, in the shade on a sunny day. it provides diffused lighting without harsh shadows. But the sun was constantly disappearing behind fast moving puffy clouds. :D

In person the minis are very smooth and the spray primer I use is top shelf stuff and always provides a very flat, very smooth coat.

The bases are temporary. I'll be ordering some urban ruin resin bases from 1 of the online suppliers in a week or so.

Your jump packs are very nice (along with the rest of the army). Would you mind sharing how you made the jet parts? It's a very clever idea.

Sure, glad to share.

I used StripStyrene Model Railroad plastic tubing. Sizes were 1/4" 3/16" and 1/8" diameters respectively. Mostly I just "eyeballed" the length, but the 1/4" tubing was cut to 1/4" long, the 3/16" tubing was cut slightly longer, about 7/16". The 1/8" tubing was cut to 3/8" length. Then the pieces were inserted into one another with one end having all 3 pieces flush at one end. Just put a spot of model glue on each piece being inserted and let them set. I did use a little variation in the lengths of the 1/8" tubing, sometimes cutting it the same length as the 3/16" piece of tubing. The longer 1/8" pieces kind of make the jump pack look like the jets are in "afterburner" mode.

I cut the exhaust port "orbs" off the packs and glued the other pieces on in their place. Once the glue dried I primed and painted.

On 2 of the models I left the exhaust port "orbs" in place for ease of identification, since these are carrying Flamers and used a different method of construction. Either method works equally well. To add the top intake I cut pieces of 1/4" and 3/16" tubing to 3/32" length, inserted the 3/16" inside the 1/4" and glued it to the top of the exhaust port orb. The bottom pieces were constructed like the others, I just glued them to the bottom of the exhaust port.

The trick to cutting the tubing is to use a longer blade and gently roll the tubing with the blade, which makes a nice even scoring all the way around the tubing. Just use even pressure and make sure the blade is square on the tubing and not angled slightly, or you end up with a spiral cut. Once the scoring is all the way around and not cutting all the way thru the tubing, you can then just snap the tubing, which has a nice even edge. I found that trying to cut thru the tubing aften caused an uneven cut which required filing. The scoring-snap method does not cause an uneven cut.

Personally, I like the way you've 'subverted' the DA icons to Chaos! :woot: Guess there are more Fallen than the DA actually think.

I see my use of the DA iconography is having my desired result! ;)

This was exactly what I was going for when building the army. I wanted something imperial, easily recognizable, yet unholy, desecrated, and cultists.

You see...Volchek, the Chaos Lord, is a Fallen Angel....

That purple is absolutely gorgeous!

Recipe perhaps?

Sure.

Vallejo Game Colours Royal Purple & Skull White. Royal Purple for base, Royal Purple/Skull White 50/50 mix for highlights. The only thing I do when painting the purples is add a drop of acrylic extender to the paint. It extends drying time a little but creates a very smooth, fluid paint without making it watery or diluting the colour.

Here's 2 more additions to my CSM Renegade Chapter, Origin of Nightmares.

Just finished them today and grabbed some pictures before dusk.

Next up: WIP on a Chaos Dreadnought conversion of the AoBR SM Dread and WIP converting the AoBR SM Terminators to Chaos Terminators. Oh yeah, and another Chaos Rhino.

C&C is welcome.

Used a leftover Havoc launcher from my Chaos Predator to make a Missile Lancher for my Chaos Dread. Both arms are detachable so the missile launcher can be placed on either side.

...I don't like it.

The expanses of silver just look boring to me, and the Chosen are, to be completely honest, monochromatic. I'm sure this isn't your painting skills, you've done some nice painting, but I just really am not a fan of the scheme =/.

I suppose my main beef is that there isn't much definition, particularly on the Chosen, but omnipresent across the force. It makes good painting skills such as yours obviously are, look boring and uninspired.

Sorry, but that's how I feel.
