Hand drawing of a female space marine

Recommended Posts

For those who like female space marines, take a look, for those who strongly dislike them click the back button, anyways I drew this and it has a bit of work left, i just need some input and some pointers to see is anything is wrong.

Its a good start! The body and legs look good, but the body doesn't look like it is armored.

There is some room for improvement. For example the eyes are a bit uneven and the head needs to be a bit bigger. Also the arms are a bit too large for the rest of the body.

I never understand why people get so up in arms about female marines. Its an interesting concept regardless of whether fluff supports it or not.

Keep up the good work.

the head is quite small as mentioned, the body and legs are alright, but the arms make her look like a monkey far too big, and long

also watch your angles, if the view of the shoulder pads is form the lower front, then so should the rest...meaning a jaw, bottom boobage and chest/ribcage, basically as if you are lying on the ground looking up at her crotch(no sexual reference intended)

Some pointers:

Pick up an anatomy book. Maybe two. Seriously. There's a lot wrong with it, and I don't even know where to begin. Your average person is 7-and-a-half heads tall. That is to say, their height is, for the most part, the height of their head stacked on itself seven and a half times. A fast and rough measurement got me to about 9, and you can't even see all of her. This is because the head is terribly tiny, as if she suffered from microcephaly.

Her arms are too long. Stand up, and put your arms at your side. If you're not a tyrannosaurus rex, your fingertips should be inches from your knees.

Her hands are huge. Huge. If she put her big hand in front of her tiny head, you would not be able to see her head.

The hand gripping the gun is wrong. This way of displaying that someone is holding something is common, but wrong. People do not hold guns that way. There's no trigger on the gun. The view on the gun is skewed (the way she is holding it, the barrels look wrong). Most of the gun looks wrong, actually. And the bayonet appears to be attached to the gun magazine.

Her torso, actually, isn't bad. It actually looks somewhat proportional. This is belied by everything else being not in proportion, which makes it hard to see.

The armor on the legs is wrong. Actually, the armor for the most part is incorrect.

Perspective is all over the place.

The cloth isn't right at all. That isn't how cloth folds. look at a towel, crumple it a little. It's not perfectly straight with some folds rising up.

I forgot about the face. The head is anime-inspired, but you must keep in mind that people that actually draw anime know about human proportions. They may then shatter those with huge eyes overly large noses and chins or whatever, depends on your character, but they look right, and for good reason. They know the rules, so they know how to break them. This goes for almost anyone that does cartoons, anime or western or what have you. Staring at the face, I'm not even sure where to begin. I'll come back to it later. I think I need a drink.

Here are some sites you can peruse:

http://www.drawspace.com/ has tutorials and whatnot for a bunch of stuff. You have to sign up to view them, but signing up is free.

Anatomy books at a bookstore will help. Look for books by Burne Hogarth in particular.

For cloth: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qi...04200752AAn1NHB

You may also want tutorials and how-tos about basic drawing skills. Just as a building needs a foundation, so too do drawing skills.

A good critique

I agree with what this guy says. I would like to reinforce the fact that you desperately need to work on your proportions. The head and hands alone are throwing me off.

Actually, that's exactly why people get up in arms about it. What would be the reaction if Harry Potter started using French to cast spells, or Frodo had to toss a magical helmet in Mt. Doom, or if someone refered to Apu (from the Simpsons) as 'that Chinese guy'?

That's right, the people that greatly enjoy the fluff and other background materials would be upset.

Don't get me wrong. I can't stop you from making pictures of buxom women weilding big guns. If such a picture is well done, I would probably applaud it. But why not label the picture as being of a Sister of Battle? It fits with the fluff if nothing else.
