Brother Commissar

Recommended Posts

this was a model I was working on about a year or so ago, as part of a themed army. Sadly, due to complications the model never got completed and is now in a state of dis-repair, so will never actually get finished. But, it's one of my favourites so I thought I'd put it up on the B+C for reference should anyone need it.

The idea behind the brother commissar was part of the fluff for my DIY chapter; The Black Titans.

The Black Titans enlistic squads of convicts and criminals, better they die serving the emperor than waste souls that may still have a use. So, in order to maintain discipline, a Battle Brother that showed a particularly strict and disciplined resolve would be trained as a Brother Commissar.

Rule wise, the unit would just be a proxy for the lopst and the damned traitor guardsmen, with the chaos marine sargeant (it's been a while.. not sure what the unit's actually called). Model wise, it was a great opportunity to model an ornately dressed and mean looking character.

the initial look was based on a hybrid of imperial commissars, Ursakar Creed, and generic marines.

The head was sculpted on on a filed down chaos marine head, the one often used for chaplains.. (if anyone's got an original picture of it.. post it for me :nuke:) initially I sculpted a sort of pulp WW2 esque helmet on top, then sculpted the hat on in stages.

now, I wanted him to look big and imposing, so I based the armour style off of doghouse gothic truscale marine, in reality it's just a repinned set of marine legs with a lot of works. he's about the same height as truscale marines.

also modelled an armoured gorget, Mk8 style, and put him in an a pose suggested he's surveying the ranks for any man not performing well.

Work continues on the legs, and the arms are put in. I wanted to have the hands resting on the hips to give a more confident look and maintain the U. Creed likeness. The plasticard around the neck is the start of the collar, Again in the creed style.

the rest is pretty self explanatory, so I'll let you put in your own commentary for the last few pic. ;)

and That's as far as it got. the cape wasn't thought through properly, and it caused a lot of hassle, so the project sort of dwindled.

The head, however has been kept. I intend to cast it soon, so I know I can use it on a few models without the hassle of making a new one. Eventually I may even make a new brother commissar.. but it's not on my 'things to do' :o

As far as the weapons were concerned, I was going to model then being carried seperately by acolytes and such, mounted on small bases. rules wise they couldn't be shot at, and didn't take up transport capacity (I'm sure something else works like that too..). But it'd allow me to switch equipment between matches without remodelling the character and still being WYSIWYG. :)

ah well, enjoy.

I get the impression this model is going to be shelved (post casting the head for your self), never to see the light of day? Sir, i believe it is you who is the criminal! This is a wonderful model and i will gladly take him off your hands to paint up and display in all the glory he deserves! :) Either that or i'll have to have a go myself - the model has no place in my DA army but i love it that much.

I fully approve of this model.

"I'm the new Commissar!"

Ahem. Sorry.

I think you should try to finish it. Maybe you could do something with the Captain's cloak? Extend it with your mad sculpting skillz. Have it drape over one arm with the other in a suitably dramatic pose (or executing a soldier).

I appreciate all these positive comments, I was slightly concerned the un-orthodox design would come across as slightly 'silly'.

the cloak was never finished, I wanted to sculpt the folds and such into it, but I never got so far.

@alys dwr: well, I would've sent it to you.. but it's since been salvaged for reference and bitz. although given the reviews here, I think I may have to make a Better version of it.

@hubernator: The black titans sported a Grey scheme as standard:

I was thinking either using that, or a similar scheme in black with a red lining to his cape, to match traditional commissar heraldy.

I heartily endorse anyone who wants to make their own version, I'd love to see other peoples takes on the theme. :)

as for new models? I'm working on an iron warriors army atm, based on the new marine 'dex (More room with chaos to do unconventional things, and the new loyalist dex has some awesome new toys) I'll be sure to post up anything I get completed.
