muzzyman1981
Actually yeah he brought the Nightbringer in at 1000pts but we also had to contend with a bunch of Tau and Daemons....I tried taking his guys out (took out a squad of warriors with my Wolf Priest's pack) but they got lit up by the other Necron squad and by time I could get to them I had to go through the Necron Lord (which I destroyed easily) and by then it was just my Wolf Priest (who made 9 saves in one go - 8 saved and 1 failed that got ignored from HBAP). The others were just trying to deal with Battle Suits, the Nightbringer, and Daemons while I tried to take out the rear....and my Scouts never got to come on. Almost got him though. Grimfoe
As for discussing 2nd edition, I believe the blood thirster is the winner with WS 10 and 8 wounds was it? :D Or how about Abbadons' roll a D20, then a D12, then 2 D6 and etc.... Don't forget, the Lascannon used to do 2d6 wounds, I believe? Long fangs were so sweet in 2nd edition. Mine never met a thirster they didn't like. Back on topic: I think Ragnar is worth the points, every time. I've been playing 1850 points and have fielded him every game. As I'm still building my army, I've not had a great deal of choice in how I played him, but he seems to work extremely well coming from a Rhino with my GH's. When I can afford it, I also include a WGPL. They'll ride across the field and "lurk" on first turn and then charge out. I haven't done it yet, but my understanding is that you could disembark Ragnar on one side of the rhino and the GH's on the other. Then charge in opposite directions, if the need arises. I like having him assault with the Hunters, however, as the +2 attacks for the Hunters and the Wolf Guard are pretty sweet. LPetersson
Back on topic: I think Ragnar is worth the points, every time. FWIW, I couldn't agree more. I have started always bringing him when it's 1500 or more. He's well worth every single point as long as you can keep him from getting shot to pieces... Grey Mage
LOL That was just a figure of speech there Mage....it doesn't matter what edition of the rules or codex....it's just common sense and general fairness that if one person can't use any Special Characters then neither should (or in the case of a tourney...no one). I played the Nightbringer last weekend in a 3v3 1000pt/per army game....we threw almost everything at it and only knocked out 4 of 5 wounds. In any case, Special Characters are in there for a reason....the rule shouldn't be "Space Wolves can't use their SCs unless allowed...." but rather "Use of SCs should be agreed upon by both players (or Tourney Organizer)." I haven't got to play with the Great Wolf but from what I hear he is expensive but worth it for the most part. I figured it was... but wanted to illustrate a point. In general I dont care if DE or anyone else wants to bring special characters, but there is a reason that some of the older ones had this limitation. Ill also note that Tyranids have no special characters.... is this equality? *shrugs* I dont think its a big deal, but a tyranid player might see it differently. As for the Nightbringer... if hes in anything less than 2000 pts I laugh. 600 pts of necrons is.... 2 squads of 10 warriors at 320pts.... lord at a base 100... give him 50pts of options, maybe 70.... thats 490. A very small squad of immortals or a full squad of wraiths would more than take up the difference.... lets say 5 immortals.... so 26 necrons... so phase out at 8 models. So all you have to do is kill 18 necrons and its done. I could do that with eldar in one, maybe two turns. Space Wolves... two maybe three turns, less if I drop pod plasma or use one of those three vindicator lists. *shakes head* Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/155157-special-characters-worth-the-cost/page/2/#findComment-1812268 Share on other sites
Wolf89
less if I drop pod plasma or use one of those three vindicator lists. *shakes head* <== :) 3 Vindi's you say? @ Muzzy, when you were talking about your wolf priest making 9 saves (8 saves and 1 HP&B) you know that the wolf priest cannot use the HP&B on himself right?... :tu: I can't wait to see you posting lists Omar, it's been a while, and now I'm giddy to see what you come up with... HIGH EXPECTATIONS! ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/155157-special-characters-worth-the-cost/page/2/#findComment-1812326 Share on other sites
WolfLordLars
Way to go.. just mess it up. Originally I was thinking Ragnar with a big WG pack in a Land Raider.. but I dont think I am going to go against my "NO LR under 2000" policy unless I absolutely have to. Should have them up tonight. Not much else to do at work (you know, except for work...). ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/155157-special-characters-worth-the-cost/page/2/#findComment-1812659 Share on other sites

WolfLordLars
Still nothing. Turns out, for the past two days, while at work... they actually want me to work. :P Hopefully something tomorrow. Good news, the TO said special characters are fine, so I am golden for a Ragnar list. Thinking a foot slogging army with a drop pod for Ragnar and GH. Maybe some bikes to help them out. Well I fail at being productive, I didn't take my laptop along with my trip, but so far I've beaten every guy they've thrown at me and I'm getting more games in today and Sunday to finish the rest off... so far the wolves are 3/0/0 against chaos, eldar and tau so far... When I get back home in a few days I'll see about whipping up a list for you and see what you think.
