You can either fire the plasma or the bolter, not both in the same turn I think that's what Hexx meant - your choices are to rapid-fire the plasma (as in you can't choose to single-tap if you're within 12"); if you're worried about burning your face off on a 'lesser' foe you can choose to fire the bolter instead of the plasma; or you can choose not to fire either weapon at all. Out of curiosity, where does it state that you must rapid fire a plasmagun if it's within 12"? I agree there really wouldn't be a reason not to, but is this explicitly stated in the rules anywhere?
