The History and Legacy of Dorn's Betrayal

Aurelius Rex

As someone who found and stayed here at B&C due to the Dornian Heresy, I cannot thank you enough for making this brother Aurelius.

That said, I cannot wait 'til Halloween now! I've been waiting to read your take on my favorite Chaos Legion for as long as I've known about the Heresy.

Keep up the astounding work!

Just went back over the pdf and thought that, in preparation of the coming release of the Night Lords, we should go over what has been said about them so far.

- "First, Curze of the Night Lords attacked Rogal Dorn, before going on the run with his legion." (page 3) This happened before the betrayal at Istvaan, so maybe we get some insight into Dorn's fall?

-"A ray of hope came for the embattled defenders as the mercurial Night Lords appeared from nowhere. Nothing had been heard from the legion since their primarch, Konrad Curze, had physically attacked Dorn and taken his followers into hiding. Once more, Night Lord fought Imperial Fist, but this time the reason for it was clear. Characteristic of the Night Haunter‟s favoured tactics, the battle through the Imperial Palace was brutal and swift. Then, without warning, they withdrew to take the fight elsewhere across Terra."

-and-

"The Emperor was long-gone - spirited away by the Night Lords at the start of the siege." (page 5) So a bit of Night Lord sneakyness smuggling the Emperor out of the Palace under Dorn's own nose. sounds like fun to me.

-As soon as the Emperor announced His decision to board the Phalanx, Curze appeared from the shadows and volunteered his services. It was known that the Night Lord Primarch was privy to prophetic visions, often of the worst possible fates, and yet even to the Emperor he rarely spoke of what he saw. It was said that these nightmares were not inevitable, and that Curze was constantly tormented to ensure that the worst excesses of his visions would not come to pass.

Before he could be asked more details of his plan, Curze was gone. True to his word, though, at the appointed hour sensors registered an internal explosion aboard the Phalanx and the shields preventing teleportation flickered and died. (page 6)

-the Emperor hung back, and as though compelled by some unexplained urge, kicked aside a fallen tapestry to reveal the brutalised corpse of Konrad Curze. (page 6) Poor Curze, going off to meet his death, but still dying to complete his mission, a noble death as any.

I think that's all, unless I missed anything. Ok, so now the big questions

1. no word about what happened to Nostromo, so they could have a home world or they might not. With the Thousand Sons and World Eaters both losing their home worlds, I would be surprised to see another orphaned Legion, but you never know.

2. If the Alpha Legion had not been fighting the ultramarines half a galaxy away, they might have used very similar tactics to evacuate the Emperor. It will be interesting to see how the Nightlords are differentiated from the Hydra.

3. Curze is going to die, we all know that, but does it have any connection to having a M'shen like figure?

4. I'm hoping we get to see Curze die a very noble, tragic death like a real hero, but this is still 40k and nothing is ever quite that shiny. Still, should be a good read.

Add a fifth question to the list. We've seen some of our favorite marine characters mentioned in colorpieces and such, like Khârn, Calgar, Bjorn, and others. Will the Soul Hunter and his merry band of miscreants be included in some way?
Just a quick question here. After Nikaea, Magnus and the Thousand Sons were soul bound to the Emperor because they were psykers. Does this mean all the other loyalist legions would have their librarians soul bound too? Also, do they continue this practice Post Heresy? If so, how?

Don't forget Talonmaster Zso Sahaal, or perhaps I should say Legion Master Zso Sahaal?

Ah, yes, I had almost forgotten. His exploits should be... interesting.

The same way Astropaths are soul-bound to the Emperor in "current" 40k?

anyone other than me thinking of using Dornian Heresy Loyalists in Space Marine??

Dornian Heresy games? EC, IW, DG, LW vs SW, DA, IF, WS

some legions wouldnt be playable because of mutations or armour variations.

eg. UM (Mk16 Armour), RG (shape shifting), TS (blind helms, crests and staffs), BA (decayed bodies and armour), WB (votive cloths and engraved armour), IH (more mechanisation than is actually possible in the game), NL (batwing stuff, lightning patterns)

available legions: DA, EC, IW, WS, SW, IF, WE, DG, SA, AL

I use a DH Heresy era Imperial Fist as one of my Chaos Armours.

Yellow Armour, Black Trim & The Red Corsairs Chapter insignia.

Looks pretty good if i say so myself ;)

Hehe, you have got the pertinent references to the Night Lord, Culebras. Not sure how much to say without spoiling the surprise with... er... spoilers!

I was conscious of trying to differentiate the Alpha Legion and the Night Lords as regards their tactics. It boils down to the Alpha Legion not letting anyone know they were there until they have completed their mission, and the Night Lords wanting everyone to know they are there so they will be crippled with fear, suspecting that every shadow could hold messy death. The times they are forced not to reveal their presence (like getting the Emperor out from under the noses of the Imperial Fists) really goes against their instincts, but they are rational enough to realise that it was necessary.

The Assassins play a big part in the legion's history, but it may not be the obvious!

Oh, and Nostramo does still exist.

As to JS's fifth question, depending how the colourpieces shake out there may be brief cameos or nods... and to Sanguiniusreborn - good call! :D

Ok, I know this is not the best timing, what with night lords right around the corner, now that we know for sure the necrons are back (with a ton of new fluff to go with them), does anyone see how this might affect the Iron hands?

BTW, I do not have a codex, i'm just going off the stuff posted online at http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/...p?aId=18500105a and various rumors.

Arguably, it might open up the Hands to a wider array of weapons, but if the C'tan are now shards and not full blown gods... ;)

What now? GW are calling the C'tan 'Shards'? Argh! My brain is now so scrambled with this alternate timeline that I can no longer be sure what GW lore I, uh, adapted, and what I came up with myself!

It would certainly be hilarious to find that the GW authors had read the DH Iron Hand article and liked the Dragonshard name / idea - that would be an amazing honour, but it was more likely a pre-existing idea I unconsciously picked up on! :)

Half an hour to go, I am buzzing in anticipation. ;)

Still working on it... and appropriately enough for Halloween my eyes are currently scarily bloodshot from staring at this monitor. :)

It's going to need some serious final proofreading tomorrow, so assuming this goes smoothly expect to see it at about two minutes to midnight (GMT!) That would still technically be Halloween.

Hope it's worth the wait!

Aurelius.
