Kanithon's Marines one and all.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Ages ago I posted a topic about me painting my White Templars, just look something like this:

http://i309.photobucket.com/albums/kk372/kanithon/Space%20Marines/DSC00174.jpg

I've got better at painting them but painting white is really boring and dull and I want some colour.

Now, I'm a big fan of Rogal Dorn so I'm thinking of starting another army from his Gene-Seed.

This is my try on the Imperial Fists:

What'cha think?

I have a few chapters that I'd like to do that aren't from Dorn's Gene-Seed,

I've made enough spears to make a few tactical squads of Iron Snakes.

I've got a lot of robed bodies lying around to start the Guardians Of the Covenant.

What I really want, is persuading. If you were to suggest me a chapter and show me the scheme I'd have a go at it and we could see what happens from there...

=]

Thanks, your help would really be appreciated.

The first model isn't great but it's not terrible. You should go over certain spots and fix up a few things to make it look cleaner. The second model seems to be very chipped. I would go over it one more time with white spray and then 4-5 thin layers of yellow.

It also appears to be painted on, hmm do we think this may be battle damage

That would be correct, I wanted him to appear he's been it battle for a while, I like the whole idea of the marines in mid combat type thing. =]

he looks great, your painting looks like it has improved from the white templar

Thank you :)

That white templar is about 2/3 years old now. I may have to show you a newer one.

whereas the Imperial fist is about 2 weeks old.

at any rate, its a really well pained yellow, i'd like to see him finished

I'll try my hardest to get him finished in the next week or so, depending how lazy I am

Right, I've been a busy little bee and have tried out a few colour schemes:

Use a white undercoat on your white templars. You're putting on way too much white to try to get coverage. To paint light on black needs a lot of patience and build up through mid tones (or get hold of some of the foundation paints - they're very good and save quite a few coats). To my eye the uber-thick paint is really ugly.

Also try to pay a bit more attention to cleanup and prep - those mould lines and venting threads are ugly. Spending 10 minutes per fig on cleanup will save hours of work later...

I tried using a white undercoat but I didn't like the results. I like to think that these are good, apparently I was wrong >.<

And about the mould lines, these models that i've used to test out colour schemes were on my desk being ready to get cleaned up but I wanted to try some schemes so I went ahead and sprayed them. I'll clean them up later.

Sorry About that,

Your beige has worked out nicely, the other's haven't IMHO. As spotted earlier, your white needs some underlayer, or at least keep the layers thinner. Plus, coverage on the models isn't the best. There's room for improvement here, make sure you get them looking good :)

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yeah, Lysanders still not finished, I'm working on him right now.

Plus, coverage on the models isn't the best.

Yeah, I can see that now, I guess at the time I was just excited about getting the paint on the models. I'll go back and make the colours better if I decide to go that way. They're all a bit rushed as it stands.

I think it's just because I'm a lazy painter which isn't really that good to be honest, as you can see with my white marines.

I like the bottom red marine and the orange marine the most personally, but I can't decide.

I think I need more persuading..

White is an extremely tough color to paint over a black undercoat. You should consider painting a thin layer of maybe a flesh/white mix before applying white. Otherwise I suggest that any of the bright colors like red, white, yellow be painted over a white undercoat.

I like the purple marine and the orange marine. Only two I see you have a problem with is the white and bone? colors.

On the red and a couple of others it looks like you might have applied red ink? or wash. Those are tricky applications and can make your paint finish look mottled. Try just applying it only in the areas you want to reveal recesses. Otherwise you will have to go back over some areas with your primary color and that will add thickness.

I know the pains of painting red, white, and yellows.

thanks heartily <_< *decides not to plug WIP thread* :D

Keep going with these, if you get to grips with layers and practise then these'll turn out great

Thanks for all the comments guys =]

How did you paint the blue marine?

The Blue was a basecoat of regal blue

A drybrush of enchanted blue

then a wash of Asurmen blue

I don't like the blue though, the lighter colour is too obvious, I'm going to try that one again i think.

i really like the purple marine with the white shoulder pad, is good stuff. would look tight as an army

That's my attempt at Soul Drinkers. I really like there colour and I the history... I think I could get it to work =]

I like the purple marine and the orange marine

Yay, Someone finally likes the Orange marines. I even tried to do highlights on that one =/

I love the beige(?) Marine.

Infact, What are the colors/what colors mixed did you use?

It was a white undercoat, which I sprayed

then a wash of that Sepia wash

then a few light drybrushes of bone.

Hope that helps

Even that didn't work, I've modelled some tactical squads to paint for the LPC but I still can't decide on a scheme =[

I've also done lysanders cloak now, that's about it >.<

Scheme problems I see... well it all depends which you think is best (and a certain element of simplicity helps ). Personally I like the beige scheme you've done. By the way is this a DIY Chapter?

yeah, It will be a DIY.

I've decided to repaint all of my white templars to different chapters and then come back, buy brand new models and take time over them and stun you all with the slowness of my painting because normally I like to get things painted fastt as you can probably see from my ubove marines =/
